Every house in a Vedic chart is ruled by the planet that owns the sign on it, and that planet is called the house lord (bhavesha). Where the lord sits is one of the most revealing things in a chart, because it shows where the house’s affairs are carried and worked out. The lord of the 7th in the 10th ties partnership to career; the lord of the 10th in the 7th ties career to partnership. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives a whole chapter to the effects of house lords in the twelve houses, and the guides below explain each placement in plain terms.
Three things decide how a placement works: the dignity of the lord in the sign it occupies, whether it is a functional benefic for your ascendant (a lord that also rules the 6th, 8th or 12th is mixed), and timing, since the placement shows most in the Mahadasha and Antardasha of that lord. Every guide includes a table for all 12 ascendants with the lord, its sign, its dignity and its other house.
To find your own placements, use the free kundali tool: it shows each house’s lord and the house it sits in.

- Yogas in a chart: many yogas are built from house lords, such as Raja Yoga, Parivartana Yoga and Viparita Raja Yoga.

Frequently asked questions
↳ What is a house lord in Vedic astrology?
It is the planet that rules the sign on a house. For a Leo ascendant, for example, the 7th house is Aquarius, so Saturn is the 7th lord. Rahu and Ketu rule no sign, so they are never house lords in the classical scheme.
↳ Is a house lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th house always bad?
No. These houses ask more of the lord, but lords of difficult houses placed in other difficult houses can form Viparita Raja Yoga, and much depends on dignity and aspects. Each guide explains what helps.
↳ What if two house lords sit in each other's houses?
That is an exchange, or Parivartana Yoga, and it binds the two houses closely, as if each lord sat in its own sign. Read both placements together.
↳ Which matters more, the planet in a house or the lord of the house?
Both matter. Planets in a house colour it directly, while the lord shows where the house's affairs are taken. Astrologers read them together, along with aspects to the house.
