People often ask whether their Vastu should be matched to their birth chart: whether a Mars person should avoid the south-east, whether a Saturn person belongs in the south-west. The question is natural, because both subjects are old Indian sciences concerned with place and time, and because modern practice mixes them freely.
This page is an attempt to say what can responsibly be said. Vastu and Jyotish are separate systems. They share a world and a vocabulary, and a competent practitioner of one does not need the other. The links between them are real but loose, and the popular claim that your planets dictate which room you sleep in is one this site does not make.
Two systems, one vocabulary
Vastu, in the classical texts read for this site, is about a plot, a house and the directions of the ground. Jyotish is about the sky at a moment, chiefly your birth. Both use the eight directions, both use the names of gods and planets, and both draw on the same Sanskrit tradition.
Where they overlap in the texts is in timing. The Brihat Samhita says the owner should enter the ground in an hour fixed by an astrologer and begin the work then (53.98), and the Manasara describes a day and moment chosen for the first entry into the house (Acharya’s summary of chapter 37). That is Jyotish serving Vastu: the choice of a good time to begin. It is not Vastu reading your chart.
The 4th house
In Jyotish the fourth house, the sukha bhava, is the house of the home: the house you live in, the land it stands on, the mother, vehicles, domestic peace and the feeling of being settled. Reading it is a straightforward exercise. Which sign is on the 4th? Which planet lords it, and where is that planet? Which planets sit in the house, and which aspect it? What is the lord’s dignity, and is it running a dasha now?
What comes out is a description of a person’s relationship to home and property. It may show that a person moves often, that property comes late, that the home is a place of effort or a place of rest. The planet in house articles describe each placement: Mars in the 4th, Saturn in the 4th, the Moon in the 4th, and Jupiter in the 4th.
A sober reading is a tendency and a timing, never a sentence. A challenged 4th house does not say that your home will be unhappy. It says where the work has been assigned.
Mars
Mars is traditionally the planet of land and of building. The tradition calls him the son of the earth and links him with property, construction, surveying and soil. So a strong Mars, or Mars well connected to the 4th house or its lord, is read in the tradition as supportive of acquiring land, and a difficult one as a cue to take care with the practical side of building, contracts and boundaries.
That is a statement about what Mars signifies in a chart. It is a statement about timing, for instance that periods of Mars or of the 4th lord are a traditional moment to watch for property matters. It is not a statement that Mars people should avoid the south-east because Mars is fiery, though some guides say so.
Saturn
Saturn is read for delay, endurance, old things, labour and what is built slowly to last. In relation to a home, a traditional reading links a Saturn influence on the 4th house with property that comes later in life, with older buildings, with effort in the domestic sphere, and with long-running obligations attached to a house.
As with Mars, this is about a person’s chart and its timing. Saturn is also the traditional significator of the west in the planet-direction scheme, and the directions article shows that the two main schemes agree only on Mars and Saturn. That is the one place where the direction of a planet and the classical strength in a chart happen to coincide, and it is thin ground on which to build a rule.
What a measured reading might say
A measured reading might say things like these:
- This is the period of a planet connected to the 4th house, which traditionally favours property decisions, so it is a reasonable time to give a house serious thought.
- Saturn’s transit is over the 4th house now, which tends to slow things down, so expect delays in a purchase or a build and allow for them.
- Your chart shows strong support for settling in one place, or shows that you may settle away from where you were born.
It would not say that a planet forbids a room, that a door must be changed to suit a dasha, or that a home is cursed. Nor does it need to.
What this site will not claim
- That your planets fix a direction in your house for you.
- That a room in the wrong corner will harm your health, your marriage or your money.
- That Vastu changes your dasha, or that a remedy in the house undoes a placement in the chart.
- That a gemstone is a substitute for care in building or for a doctor’s advice.
On gemstones: they are a valid remedy in Jyotish and this site does not deny it. It does not push them: a gemstone is suggested only after a full chart reading shows that one is called for. They have no place in the classical Vastu verses read here.
Using the chart sensibly
If you want to use astrology around a home, the practical applications are the traditional ones. - Planet and direction. Two schemes exist, and they agree only for Mars and Saturn.
