How this calculator works
Positions, including your ascendant, are computed in your own browser by our ephemeris, using the Lahiri ayanamsa and the mean lunar node for Rahu and Ketu, checked against the Swiss Ephemeris to within about a minute of arc for the Sun and Moon and about ten minutes of arc for Jupiter and Saturn. Your ascendant comes from the local sidereal time at your birth place, so an accurate birth time matters here more than for most calculators on this site. The time zone in force at your birth place, including daylight saving, is applied automatically, and nothing you enter is sent to our server.
The calculator checks whether Mars falls in the first, second, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth house counted from three points: the Lagna, the Moon and Venus. This three-reference method is the stricter approach followed in north Indian practice; many matching tables count from the Lagna alone, which is one reason two sources can disagree on whether a chart is Manglik at all. Severity is graded by how many references are hit: all three reads as high, two as moderate, one as mild.
It then tests cancellations against your placements: Mars in its own sign, Aries or Scorpio, or exalted in Capricorn; Mars in Leo or Aquarius, recognised by several authorities; Jupiter conjunct or aspecting Mars; and Jupiter or Venus in the Lagna. Each is checked individually and named when it applies. Two further cancellations are listed but not tested, since the calculator works from one chart at a time: both partners carrying Mangal Dosha, and age above twenty-eight, a widely followed convention.
Reading your result
The result shows which of the three references Mars hits, the resulting severity, and each cancellation in turn, marked as applying or not. A cancellation that applies is stated plainly, for instance that Jupiter aspects Mars in your chart, and the severity is adjusted accordingly rather than left at its original grade. The two cancellations the calculator cannot test are listed anyway, so you know they exist and can weigh them yourself.
Where traditions differ
The biggest disagreement is the starting point: whether Mars should be counted from the Lagna only, or from the Lagna, the Moon and Venus together. This calculator uses the stricter three-reference method, so it will sometimes flag a dosha that a Lagna-only table misses, the most common reason two Mangal Dosha checks disagree on the same chart. There is also no full agreement on the extra cancellation signs, Leo and Aquarius are accepted by several authorities but not treated as universal, and no consensus on the age at which the dosha stops mattering, twenty-eight being the most widely quoted figure rather than a fixed rule.
What it cannot tell you
This calculator reads one chart. It cannot check whether a prospective partner also carries Mangal Dosha, one of the two classical cancellations, and it does not know your age, so it lists the age convention without applying it.
