How this calculator works
The ascendant is computed from the local sidereal time at your birth place, using the Lahiri ayanamsa, all worked out in your own browser by our ephemeris. Checked against the Swiss Ephemeris, the underlying planetary positions agree to within about a minute of arc for the Sun and Moon and about ten minutes of arc for Jupiter and Saturn. The time zone in force at your birth place on your birth date, including daylight saving, is applied automatically, and nothing you enter is sent to our server.
Because the ascendant depends on the precise moment and place of birth, the calculator also shows the range of clock time either side of your stated birth time during which the same sign was rising. A sign rises in roughly two hours on average, faster near the equator and slower at higher latitudes, and the calculator states the actual window for your birth place rather than the average.
Reading your result
Your Lagna is shown with its exact degree and the nakshatra and pada it falls in, since the ascendant has its own nakshatra just as the Moon does. The time window alongside it shows how much room for error your birth time has before the Lagna would change to the sign before or after. A wide window, sometimes an hour or more near the middle of a sign, means small errors will not change your Lagna. A narrow window, a few minutes either side, means they might, and it is worth confirming your birth time from a hospital record rather than family memory.
Where traditions differ
Sign-based Vedic astrology, the whole-sign house system this calculator and this site use, treats the entire sign containing the Lagna as the first house, each following sign as the next house in order. Other systems, more common in Western astrology and in the Krishnamurti Paddhati branch of Vedic practice, divide houses by unequal cusps calculated from time rather than whole signs, which can place the same planet in a different house near a cusp from an identical birth chart. This calculator gives you the sign-based Lagna; a source using cusp-based houses may read a placement near a boundary differently, a genuine difference in method, not an error in either one.
What it cannot tell you
This calculator gives you the Lagna itself, its degree, its nakshatra, and how sensitive it is to your stated birth time.
