How this calculator works
Positions are computed in your own browser with the Lahiri ayanamsa, checked against the Swiss Ephemeris to within about a minute of arc for the Sun and Moon and about ten minutes of arc for the slow planets. Rahu and Ketu are the mean lunar nodes, the convention most Indian almanacs and kundali software use; the true node can differ from the mean by up to about a degree and a half, which only matters when Rahu sits right at the edge of a sign or nakshatra.
The time zone in force at your birthplace on your birth date, daylight saving included, is applied automatically. Houses are whole signs counted from the Lagna, the way the rashi chart is read: the sign rising at birth is the first house, the next sign the second, and so on.
Reading the table
Each row gives a planet’s sign with its degree inside that sign, its nakshatra and pada, and its house. A planet marked retrograde appeared to move backwards against the stars when you were born. Rahu and Ketu always move that way, so they are not marked. A planet marked combust was within the classical distance of the Sun, which the texts read as its significations being partly eclipsed.

Without a birth time
Most planets stay in one sign and one nakshatra for the whole day, so the date and place are enough for them. The Moon is the exception: it moves about thirteen degrees a day and changes nakshatra roughly once a day, so the calculator tells you if it changed on your birth date. The Lagna and the houses need the birth time, since the rising sign changes about every two hours.

Rahu spends about eighteen months in each sign, moving backwards through the zodiac, so everyone born in the same year and a half shares its sign. What differs from person to person is the house it falls in, which needs your birth time. Enter your details above for its sign, nakshatra and house.
↳ Why are my planets in different signs from my Western chart?
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, anchored to the stars, while Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, anchored to the equinox. The two are now about twenty-four degrees apart, so most planets fall one sign earlier in the Vedic chart.
↳ Do you use the mean node or the true node for Rahu and Ketu?
The mean node, which most Indian almanacs and kundali software use. The true node wobbles around it by up to about a degree and a half. The two give the same sign and nakshatra for almost everyone.
