In Vedic astrology the Sun (Surya) is the soul, the Atma: the core of who you are under your roles. Its sign shows the style in which that core tries to lead, and its dignity shows how easily it does so. The Sun is strongest where the sign lord is a friend, and most strained where the lord is an enemy of the Sun. This page lays out all twelve signs and links to the full reading for each.
Your Vedic Sun sign may not be the one you know
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is currently about 24 degrees behind the tropical zodiac used in Western astrology. For most people that means the Vedic Sun sign is the one before the Western sign, because the Sun spends about 30 days in each sign and the difference is about three weeks. If you are told you are a Western Gemini, your Vedic Sun may well be in Taurus. Check a sidereal (Lahiri) chart before you pick a page below.
One more difference matters. In Jyotish the question “what is your Rashi?” asks for your Moon sign, not your Sun sign. The Sun sign speaks of purpose, authority and the father; the Moon sign of the mind. Both are read, and this page covers the Sun.
The Sun in the twelve signs: dignity, Sun-ruled nakshatras and the full page
Dignity is read from the Sun’s side. The Sun counts the Moon, Mars and Jupiter as friends, Venus and Saturn as enemies, and Mercury as neutral. So a sign ruled by Mars, the Moon or Jupiter is friendly, a sign ruled by Venus or Saturn is an enemy sign, and Mercury’s signs are neutral.

Aries and Libra: where the Sun peaks and where it dims
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Rules | Leo |
| Moolatrikona | Leo 0 to 20 degrees |
| Exaltation | Aries, 10 degrees |
| Debilitation | Libra, 10 degrees |
| Friends, enemies, neutral | Moon, Mars, Jupiter; Venus, Saturn; Mercury |
| Vimshottari period | 6 years, the shortest |
| Maturity age (one common list) | About 22 |
The exaltation point, 10 degrees of Aries, falls in Ashwini, a Ketu-ruled nakshatra that runs to 13 degrees 20 minutes. The debilitation point, 10 degrees of Libra, falls in Swati, ruled by Rahu, which runs from 6 degrees 40 minutes to 20 degrees. So the two extremes sit in very different nakshatras and read differently.
The Sun in Aries is a fire sign ruled by a friend, and tradition reads the exalted Sun as leadership that comes without effort. The Sun in Libra is an air sign ruled by Venus, an enemy, and the Sun there is described as defining itself through other people and through fairness, with gifts in diplomacy and art. Dignity describes ease, not worth. A strained Sun can still produce a respected life, usually by a longer road.
Leo is the Sun’s own sign, and the stretch from 0 to 20 degrees is its moolatrikona, a place of settled authority; the remaining 20 to 30 degrees are own sign without the extra emphasis.
The element sets the lens
- Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): identity flows easily into leadership and expression. The risk is excess certainty.
- Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): identity is tied to what you build and produce. Productive but weighty; authority has to be earned.
- Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): identity is expressed through ideas, communication and relationships, with a risk of spreading the self across too many connections.
- Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): identity is inward and emotional; the Sun wants visibility and the water wants privacy.
What the Sun signifies
The Sun is the king among the grahas. Its significations are the soul, the father, authority and government, ego and self-confidence, vitality, leadership, fame and recognition and the relationship with the state. In traditional astrology the Sun is also linked with the heart, the bones and the right eye. Those are symbolic correspondences, not medical statements about any chart; speak to a doctor about any health concern.
The Sun is a natural malefic, because its light is intense, yet it is the most important planet in the chart, since no other planet’s strength shows without it. It is the natural karaka of the 1st house, and also of the 9th with Jupiter. A weak Sun is described as a missing centre of gravity: the person has every other advantage and still lacks a clear reason that belongs to them.
Which nakshatra the Sun is in
The Sun’s three nakshatras are Krittika, Uttara Phalguni and Uttara Ashadha. When the Sun is in the Aries part of Krittika (pada 1) it combines exaltation with Sun-ruled territory, which tradition reads as the cleanest expression of solar fire. In the other Aries nakshatras it reads differently: Ashwini (Ketu-ruled, deity the Ashwini Kumaras) points to a healer-leader, and Bharani (Venus-ruled, deity Yama) to a creative authority with a strong sense of justice.
Two people with the Sun in the same sign can read quite differently if their nakshatras differ. Each of the twelve sign pages goes through its nakshatras.
The six-year Sun dasha
The Sun mahadasha lasts 6 years, the shortest of the nine. Tradition says it centres on identity and authority: who am I, where do I stand, who do I answer to. The sign tilts the flavour: fire signs bring bold initiative, earth signs the building of material authority, air signs identity through communication, water signs an inward deepening.
Antardasha length is 6 years multiplied by the sub-lord’s years, divided by 120.
| Sub-period | Length |
|---|---|
| Sun-Sun | 3 months 18 days |
| Sun-Moon | 6 months |
| Sun-Mars | 4 months 6 days |
| Sun-Rahu | 10 months 24 days |
| Sun-Jupiter | 9 months 18 days |
| Sun-Saturn | 11 months 12 days |
| Sun-Mercury | 10 months 6 days |
| Sun-Ketu | 4 months 6 days |
| Sun-Venus | 1 year |
The Sun is said to mature at about 22 on one common list, which often coincides with the first major act of independence: leaving home, starting work. For the wider picture see Sun through time at the end of this page.
Remedies the tradition offers for the Sun
Remedies here are offered as devotion and routine, not as treatment for any condition.
Where to start. The behavioural remedies come first because they cost nothing and act on the pattern itself. Mantra and giving come next. Temple visits and rituals are traditional and optional. A gemstone comes last, and only after a full reading of your chart: never as a first response to a single placement, because the wrong stone can strengthen the very thing it was meant to calm.
Behavioural and lifestyle
- Rise before sunrise. Greeting the Sun at dawn is the most widely given Sun practice.
- Offer water to the Sun (Surya Arghya): face east and pour water from a copper vessel while chanting the Gayatri mantra, letting the light pass through the stream.
- Take responsibility. Lead a small project, mentor someone younger or own an outcome rather than avoid it.
- Honour your father. The Sun-father connection is called karmic, and repairing it is said to strengthen the natal Sun.
- Surya Namaskar, 12 rounds daily, as a physical practice linked with the Sun. Anyone with a health condition should ask a doctor first.
Mantra
Sun Beej Mantra: Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah. The classical full count is 7,000 repetitions over a 40-day period beginning on a Sunday during Surya hora. The simple practice is 108 times daily facing east at sunrise.
Aditya Hridayam: the solar hymn that Sage Agastya recited to Rama before the battle with Ravana, recited daily by many devotees.
Donations and charity
Wheat, jaggery (gur), copper items, red cloth and red flowers, given on Sundays to temples, to the needy or to people in positions of spiritual authority.
Temple
Suryanar Koil (Surya Sthalam), the Navagraha temple dedicated to the Sun in Tamil Nadu, visited on a Sunday in red or copper-coloured clothes. For those who cannot travel, any temple where Surya is worshipped, or Surya Arghya at flowing water on Sundays.
Gemstone
A last resort, not a first step. Consider a stone only after the whole chart has been read, including this planet’s dignity and the dasha you are running.
Ruby (Manik) is worn on the ring finger of the right hand, set in gold or copper, on a Sunday during Surya hora. Ruby amplifies the Sun’s energy, so consult an astrologer before wearing it, especially if the Sun rules a dusthana house in your chart.
Using the page: from your Sun sign to the right reading
- Find the Sun’s sign in your sidereal chart (Rashi chart, D1) and open its page above.
- Check the dispositor, the lord of the Sun’s sign: it manages the Sun’s energy, and its condition decides whether the potential is realised or held back.
- Note the house, which shows where identity looks for expression, and the aspects the Sun receives.
- Add the Moon sign, since the two luminaries are read as a pair.
