In shortRahu in each sign channels the same appetite, but the element sets its target: fire wants to be someone, earth to have something, air to know or influence, water to feel intensely. It owns no sign. Most teachers place its exaltation in Taurus and debilitation in Scorpio; another school uses Gemini and Sagittarius. Ketu is always in the opposite sign.

Rahu is the planet of appetite and appetite’s blind spots: the pull toward more, toward the foreign, the new and the not-yet-mastered. It owns no sign, so it behaves like a guest who takes on the character of the host, and the sign it sits in decides what it is hungry for and how easily it gets it. Ketu is always in the opposite sign, so every Rahu placement is also a Ketu placement, and you should read the two together.

Rahu is a point, not a body: the head of Svarbhanu and the nodal axis

The Puranas tell that when the gods and the Asuras churned the Milky Ocean for amrita, the Asura Svarbhanu disguised himself as a deva and sat between the Sun and the Moon to drink. They saw him and told Vishnu, whose discus severed his head. The nectar had already touched his throat, so both parts survived: the head became Rahu and the body became Ketu. The story is used to explain eclipses and also to describe the planet’s nature: a head with no body can eat endlessly and is never full.

Astronomically Rahu is the North Node, the point where the Moon’s orbit crosses the ecliptic. It has no light and no mass, which is why Jyotish calls it a shadow planet (chhaya graha). It always moves backward through the zodiac, spending about 18 months in each sign and about 18.6 years on the full circuit. Ketu, the South Node, is always exactly 180 degrees away.

The traditional reading is simple: Rahu is where the soul reaches for something in this life, and Ketu is what it has already learned and is releasing. If Rahu is in Aries, Ketu is in Libra. Reading one without the other is like reading half a sentence.

Where Rahu is high and low: two schools

Rahu owns no sign, and its dignities are a matter of dispute.

School Exalted Debilitated
Majority view (used in the table below) Taurus Scorpio
Alternative view Gemini Sagittarius

The reasoning given for the majority view is that Rahu’s worldly appetite is most productive in Venus’s earth sign and most strained in Mars’s sign of depth and crisis. The alternative view points to Rahu’s affinity with Mercury, communication and technology, and to Jupiter’s sign of dharma as the least comfortable ground for a planet of illusion. A careful astrologer picks one school and stays with it for the whole reading, rather than mixing them, and lets the chart show which one fits.

The scheme of natural friendship that this page uses for Rahu is one common version: Mercury, Venus and Saturn as friends, the Sun, Moon and Mars as enemies, Jupiter neutral. Schools differ on this too, so treat the “relation to the sign lord” column below as indicative.

Rahu in the twelve signs: the lord, the Ketu opposite and the full page

Sign Lord Rahu’s relation to the lord Dignity Ketu in In a sentence Full reading
Aries (Mesha) Mars Enemy Neutral Libra A pioneering, impatient hunger for self-assertion. Rahu in Aries
Taurus (Vrishabha) Venus Friend Exalted (majority view) Scorpio Appetite for comfort, money and security, usually well channelled. Rahu in Taurus
Gemini (Mithuna) Mercury Friend Exalted (alternative view) Sagittarius Appetite for information, networks and technology. Rahu in Gemini
Cancer (Karka) Moon Enemy Challenged Capricorn Hunger for emotional security that can become restless or clinging. Rahu in Cancer
Leo (Simha) Sun Enemy Challenged Aquarius A craving for recognition and a central place. Rahu in Leo
Virgo (Kanya) Mercury Friend Supportive Pisces Appetite for improvement, skill and analysis. Rahu in Virgo
Libra (Tula) Venus Friend Supportive Aries Appetite for partnership, status and social polish. Rahu in Libra
Scorpio (Vrishchika) Mars Enemy Debilitated (majority view) Taurus Intense, secretive desire for depth and control. Rahu in Scorpio
Sagittarius (Dhanu) Jupiter Neutral Debilitated (alternative view) Gemini Hunger for belief, travel and a larger meaning. Rahu in Sagittarius
Capricorn (Makara) Saturn Friend Supportive Cancer Ambition for structure, authority and lasting achievement. Rahu in Capricorn
Aquarius (Kumbha) Saturn Friend Supportive Leo A pull toward reform, networks and unconventional ideas. Rahu in Aquarius
Pisces (Meena) Jupiter Neutral Mixed Virgo A craving for transcendence that can shade into escape. Rahu in Pisces

The pattern the table shows: where the sign lord is a friend (Taurus, Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Capricorn, Aquarius) the appetite usually finds a productive outlet. Where the lord is an enemy (Aries, Cancer, Leo, Scorpio) there is more friction, which tradition sees as psychological complexity as much as difficulty. Where the lord is neutral (Sagittarius, Pisces), Jupiter neither helps nor hinders and the result depends on the rest of the chart.

The element decides what Rahu wants

  • Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): to be someone, to assert identity and claim a vision.
  • Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): to have something, to build wealth, craft or standing.
  • Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): to know or influence, to command information and shape relationships and systems.
  • Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): to feel, to reach emotional depth, hidden power or transcendence.

None of these is better than another. They are four versions of the same appetite.

What Rahu signifies

In the Jyotish tradition Rahu is associated with obsession and unquenched desire, illusion and smoke screens, foreign lands and cultures, technology and the unconventional, worldly ambition, outsiders and those living on society’s margins, sudden events, the paternal grandfather and the quality of eclipse: overshadowing before revealing. Tradition also associates Rahu with intoxicants and compulsive habits. That is a symbolic link, not a statement about any individual. Anyone concerned about addiction or compulsive behaviour should speak to a doctor or a counsellor, and in India Tele-MANAS (14416) offers free mental-health support.

Rahu behaves in some ways like Saturn: slow, heavy and karmic. The difference is usually put this way: Saturn teaches through restriction and Rahu through excess.

Rahu’s own nakshatras and the Ketu-ruled ones

A sign is 30 degrees and a nakshatra 13 degrees 20 minutes, so the nakshatra often changes the reading more than the sign. Rahu rules three of them, and in each it works without another planet to filter it.

  • Ardra (6 degrees 40 minutes to 20 degrees of Gemini): symbol a teardrop, deity Rudra. The storm that clears the ground.
  • Swati (6 degrees 40 minutes to 20 degrees of Libra): symbol a young shoot in the wind, deity Vayu. Independence with a social surface.
  • Shatabhisha (6 degrees 40 minutes to 20 degrees of Aquarius): the hundred healers, symbol an empty circle, deity Varuna. Secrecy, unusual knowledge and the space between worlds.

Rahu in a Ketu-ruled nakshatra (Ashwini in Aries, Magha in Leo, Moola in Sagittarius) puts the head in territory ruled by the body, a combination read as carrying a strong karmic charge. Within any nakshatra the pada points to a navamsa sign, which refines the picture again; the individual sign pages carry the detail.

The 18-year Rahu dasha in sequence

The Rahu mahadasha lasts 18 years, third in length after Venus (20) and Saturn (19). Tradition describes it as a period of dramatic change: relocation, new directions, an intensified wish for success, foreign or technological connections and alternating fog and clarity. Because the sub-periods always run in the same order, you can map the stretch in advance. Antardasha length is 18 years multiplied by the sub-lord’s years, divided by 120.

Sub-period Length Runs to about year
Rahu-Rahu 2 years 8 months 12 days 2.7
Rahu-Jupiter 2 years 4 months 24 days 5.1
Rahu-Saturn 2 years 10 months 6 days 7.95
Rahu-Mercury 2 years 6 months 18 days 10.5
Rahu-Ketu 1 year 18 days 11.55
Rahu-Venus 3 years 14.55
Rahu-Sun 10 months 24 days 15.45
Rahu-Moon 1 year 6 months 16.95
Rahu-Mars 1 year 18 days 18

The traditional notes on the sub-periods are that Rahu-Rahu can be disorienting at the start, Rahu-Jupiter widens ambition, Rahu-Saturn is heavy and karmic, Rahu-Mercury is good for communication and technology, and Rahu-Ketu, around years 10.5 to 11.5, activates the whole axis and is read as a time to see through illusions. Rahu tends to deliver what it promises and then raise the question of whether it was what you wanted.

Rahu’s ages and cycles

  • Nodal half-cycles at about 9, 27 to 28 and 46 to 47 are the times when transit Rahu sits on natal Ketu, and the reverse.
  • Rahu returns at about 18 to 19, 37, 55 to 56 and 74, one every 18.6 years. These are read as checkpoints on ambition: threshold of adulthood, reassessment, then a shift toward legacy.
  • Maturity is placed at about 42 on one common list. The tradition says Rahu works more blindly before that age and more consciously after, as the person chooses which desires to feed. This is independent of the dasha.
  • Transit: about 18 months per sign, always backward.

Remedies the tradition offers for Rahu

Remedies are offered as practices of attention and devotion, not as treatment for anything. The tradition’s own advice is that they should be approached with clear intent and, ideally, with a qualified astrologer.

Where to start. The behavioural remedies come first because they cost nothing and act on the pattern itself. Mantra and giving come next. Temple visits and rituals are traditional and optional. A gemstone comes last, and only after a full reading of your chart: never as a first response to a single placement, because the wrong stone can strengthen the very thing it was meant to calm.

Habits that suit a Rahu theme

  1. Transparency. Rahu is said to thrive in secrecy, so choosing honesty when deception would be easier is the first practice.
  2. Service to those on the margins, such as migrants or the homeless.
  3. Moderation with intoxicants and compulsive habits, including screen time. This is a general habit and not a treatment; if alcohol, drugs or compulsive behaviour is a worry, speak to a doctor or a counsellor.
  4. Respect for the paternal grandfather’s line, through prayer, remembrance or care of elders.
  5. Contentment practices: gratitude journals and the conscious idea of “enough”.

Mantra

Om Raam Rahave Namah

This is the main Rahu beej mantra, chanted 108 times, ideally during Rahu Kala, the period of the day ruled by Rahu, which falls at a different time on each weekday. Some traditions use the simpler Om Rahave Namah as a devotional invocation. Reciting the Durga Chalisa or the Durga Saptashati is also customary, since Durga is Rahu’s presiding deity. Regular practice over months is held to matter more than occasional long sessions.

Donations and offerings

  • Black or dark blue cloth, coconut and mustard seeds on Saturdays.
  • Food for birds, particularly crows, linked with Saturn and Rahu.
  • Blue flowers at a Durga temple.
  • Gifts to organisations working with foreign-born communities or technology education.

Temples

  • Thirunageswaram (Tamil Nadu), the main Rahu temple among the Navagraha shrines, with puja during Rahu Kala.
  • Durga temples, especially during Navaratri.
  • Kala Sarpa Dosha temples: where all seven planets lie between Rahu and Ketu in the chart, specialised pujas are performed at Ujjain (Mahakaleshwar) and Nasik (Trimbakeshwar).

The most repeated advice in the tradition is that awareness is itself the remedy: the moment you can watch a Rahu-driven desire without being swept up in it, it loses its grip.

Gemstone: Hessonite Garnet (Gomed)

A last resort, not a first step. Consider a stone only after the whole chart has been read, including this planet’s dignity and the dasha you are running.

Hessonite is Rahu’s gemstone and is prescribed with extreme caution, because strengthening Rahu amplifies all of its significations, including the shadowy ones. It is generally considered only when:

  • Rahu is a functional benefic (yogakaraka) for the ascendant;
  • Rahu is well placed by sign and house and well aspected;
  • A qualified astrologer has specifically recommended it after a thorough reading of the chart.

Worn without guidance, it can intensify the very obsession and confusion the person is trying to resolve.

Using this guide: from your Rahu sign to the right page

  1. Use a Vedic (sidereal) chart. The Western tropical chart can place Rahu nearly a whole sign away.
  2. Find Rahu’s sign in the table and open its full page.
  3. Open the page for Ketu in the opposite sign as well.
  4. Add the house: the sign shows how Rahu hungers, the house shows where.
  5. Check the nakshatra and the sub-period you are currently running.
  6. Look at conjunctions. Rahu absorbs and amplifies the planet it joins, for example Venus (desire for beauty and pleasure) or Mars (risk-taking). Rahu with the Moon is traditionally called Grahan Yoga and read as a restless, sensitive mind; it needs the whole chart looked at, not a verdict.
