In shortVenus shows how you love, what you find beautiful and how you handle comfort and money. It is in its own sign in Taurus and Libra, exalted in Pisces and debilitated in Virgo. Friendly in Gemini, Capricorn and Aquarius, hostile in Cancer and Leo, neutral in Aries, Scorpio and Sagittarius. Which houses Venus rules depends on your ascendant.

Venus (Shukra) is the planet of attraction in the widest sense: love, partnership, beauty, art, comfort, money earned through taste or tact. Its sign shows the manner of loving and valuing, and its dignity shows how easily that comes. Of all the planets, Venus is the one whose result depends most on the house it rules for your ascendant as well as the sign it sits in, so the page also includes that table. Each sign has a full page linked below.

Venus in the twelve signs, ranked from most supported to most strained

Dignity is read from Venus’s side. Venus counts Mercury and Saturn as friends, the Sun and Moon as enemies, and Mars and Jupiter as neutral. Own sign, exaltation and debilitation override the friendship rule.

Rank Sign Lord Venus’s dignity In a sentence Full reading
1 Libra (Tula) Venus Own sign, moolatrikona 0 to 15 degrees Refined, balanced and diplomatic; a taste for fairness and partnership. Venus in Libra
2 Pisces (Meena) Jupiter Exalted Devotional, boundless, artistic; love as surrender. Venus in Pisces
3 Taurus (Vrishabha) Venus Own sign Sensual, loyal, fond of comfort and good things. Venus in Taurus
4 Capricorn (Makara) Saturn Friend’s sign Serious, enduring and classical in taste. Venus in Capricorn
5 Aquarius (Kumbha) Saturn Friend’s sign Unconventional, humane, idealistic in love and art. Venus in Aquarius
6 Gemini (Mithuna) Mercury Friend’s sign Curious, witty, versatile; love begun through conversation. Venus in Gemini
7 Aries (Mesha) Mars Neutral Direct, passionate and impatient. Venus in Aries
8 Scorpio (Vrishchika) Mars Neutral Intense, private, all-or-nothing. Venus in Scorpio
9 Sagittarius (Dhanu) Jupiter Neutral Freedom-loving and philosophical in affection. Venus in Sagittarius
10 Cancer (Karka) Moon Enemy sign Protective and nurturing, but easily hurt or possessive. Venus in Cancer
11 Leo (Simha) Sun Enemy sign Warm and dramatic; wants recognition in love. Venus in Leo
12 Virgo (Kanya) Mercury Debilitated Loving through service and detail, with a critical eye. Venus in Virgo

The order is a general guide, not a verdict. A debilitated Venus with cancellation of debilitation (Neecha Bhanga) can do better than an exalted Venus under heavy affliction, and the house and the nakshatra count for as much as the sign.

Deities Shukracharya, Lakshmi

Venus is exalted in Pisces and debilitated in Virgo, the opposite sign. The two signs are a study in contrast. Pisces dissolves boundaries, Virgo draws them. The traditional reading is that Venus at its height is surrender, the willingness to merge, and at its lowest it is trapped in analysis, finding the flaw before the feeling. Note that the sign lord of Virgo is Mercury, Venus’s friend, and that Jupiter, the lord of Pisces, is only neutral to Venus. The exaltation comes from the sign itself, not from the lord’s friendship.

The lesson drawn in the old books is that the best Venus has both: Pisces’s capacity for boundless care and Virgo’s capacity for devoted work.

Which houses Venus rules for each ascendant

Venus rules two signs, so it rules two houses in every chart. Read from the table of house lords (row = ascendant):

Ascendant Venus rules houses Note
Aries 2 and 7 Wealth and marriage; both are maraka houses
Taurus 1 and 6 Lagna lord, also the 6th
Gemini 5 and 12 Trikona and dusthana
Cancer 4 and 11 Kendra and gains
Leo 3 and 10 Effort and career
Virgo 2 and 9 Wealth and fortune
Libra 1 and 8 Lagna lord, also the 8th
Scorpio 7 and 12 Partnership and loss
Sagittarius 6 and 11 Service and gains
Capricorn 5 and 10 Yogakaraka: trikona and kendra
Aquarius 4 and 9 Yogakaraka: kendra and trikona
Pisces 3 and 8 Effort and transformation

Venus is the yogakaraka for Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants. For the other ascendants the mixture of houses determines whether Venus’s themes come easily; a gemstone for Venus is a matter for a qualified astrologer to weigh, never an automatic step.

What Venus signifies

Venus is the natural significator of the 7th house (marriage and partnership) and carries strong secondary meaning for the 2nd (wealth, family, voice), the 4th (comfort and vehicles) and the 12th (private pleasures, foreign lands, the dissolving of ego in union). Its significations include love, beauty, art in every form, luxury, perfume, flowers, fine clothes, diplomacy and social grace. In a man’s chart it is read as the wife or the feminine principle; in a woman’s chart, as her own relation to beauty and pleasure.

In traditional astrology Venus is also linked with the reproductive system, the kidneys, the throat and voice, the face and the skin. These are symbolic correspondences, not medical statements about any chart. Speak to a doctor about any health concern.

The Puranas give Venus a distinctive place: Shukracharya, the son of Bhrigu, chose to be the guru of the Asuras and won the Mrita Sanjeevani vidya, the knowledge of restoring life, through severe penance to Shiva. Kama, the pleasure Venus governs, is one of the four purusharthas, a legitimate aim of life.

Combustion, retrograde motion and gandanta

  • Combustion: Venus is combust within about 10 degrees of the Sun (8 when retrograde). Tradition reads a combust Venus as affection overshadowed by ego or a muted aesthetic sense, and in a man’s chart as something to look at carefully in connection with the wife.
  • Retrograde: Venus turns retrograde roughly every 19 months for about 40 days. A retrograde Venus is read as an inward one: strong feeling that is harder to voice, unconventional taste, a tendency to revisit old relationships or projects. It is not by itself a weak placement.
  • Gandanta: the junctions of water and fire signs are Cancer to Leo, Scorpio to Sagittarius and Pisces to Aries, the last 3 degrees 20 minutes of the water nakshatra and the first 3 degrees 20 minutes of the next. Venus here is traditionally read as love and beauty that are tested before they settle.

Bharani, Purva Phalguni and Purva Ashadha: Venus’s own nakshatras

Venus rules three nakshatras, each from 13 degrees 20 minutes to 26 degrees 40 minutes of a fire sign:

  • Bharani in Aries, deity Yama: desire as the power that brings something into being.
  • Purva Phalguni in Leo, deity Bhaga: union, celebration and shared abundance.
  • Purva Ashadha in Sagittarius, deity Apas, the water: desire as a purifying conviction.

To read Venus fully, follow the chain: the sign, its lord, the nakshatra, the nakshatra’s lord. Venus in Pisces in Revati (Mercury-ruled) adds communicative, literary skill to the most devotional Venus. Venus in Pisces in Uttara Bhadrapada (Saturn-ruled) adds discipline and endurance: the artist who works alone for years, or the lover whose devotion is tested by time. The full pages go through the nakshatras of every sign.

The 20-year Venus dasha

The Venus mahadasha is the longest at 20 years, and the themes are love, marriage, creative work, wealth and refinement of lifestyle. Tradition links the quality of the period to Venus’s dignity:

  • Own signs (Taurus, Libra): generally described as the easiest course, with relationships settling and creative work finding an audience.
  • Exalted in Pisces: transformative, devotional, with the caution that practical grounding can slip.
  • Debilitated in Virgo: a long apprenticeship in humility, service and finding beauty in the ordinary.
  • Enemy signs (Cancer, Leo): relationships coloured by emotional security (Cancer) or ego (Leo); success may arrive with complications.
  • Friendly signs (Gemini, Capricorn, Aquarius): steady and sustainable rather than dramatic.

Antardasha length is 20 years multiplied by the sub-lord’s years, divided by 120. The order in the Venus dasha is Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu.

Sub-period Length
Venus-Venus 3 years 4 months
Venus-Sun 1 year
Venus-Moon 1 year 8 months
Venus-Mars 1 year 2 months
Venus-Rahu 3 years
Venus-Jupiter 2 years 8 months
Venus-Saturn 3 years 2 months
Venus-Mercury 2 years 10 months
Venus-Ketu 1 year 2 months

Venus is said to mature at about 25 on one common list: before then its themes show in raw form (crushes, impulsive creative efforts), afterwards more steadily. For the wider picture see Venus through time at the end of this page.

Remedies the tradition offers for Venus

Remedies are offered as devotion and routine, not as treatment for any condition.

Where to start. The behavioural remedies come first because they cost nothing and act on the pattern itself. Mantra and giving come next. Temple visits and rituals are traditional and optional. A gemstone comes last, and only after a full reading of your chart: never as a first response to a single placement, because the wrong stone can strengthen the very thing it was meant to calm.

Habits that suit a Venus theme

  1. Keep your surroundings in order and pleasant. Venus responds to harmony in the places you live and work.
  2. Practise generosity in relationships: say the appreciation aloud and give time.
  3. Do creative work, such as painting, music, dance, cooking, gardening or poetry.
  4. Care for your appearance as an act of self-respect, not vanity.
  5. Spend with an eye for quality, neither hoarding nor spending recklessly.

Mantra

Om Draam Dreem Draum Sah Shukraya Namah

The classical full count is 16,000 repetitions during the Venus mahadasha or antardasha. The simple practice is 108 times daily on Fridays. Either is best begun on a Friday in Shukla paksha (the waxing Moon) during Venus hora. The simpler Om Shukraya Namah serves for daily practice.

Donations

On Fridays: white rice, sugar, white silk or clothing, perfume or fragrant oils, ghee, camphor, silver items or white flowers, given to women, artists or temples.

Fasting and worship

The Friday fast (Shukravar Vrat) is among the most widely observed Venus practices. Some keep it complete until sunset, others partial, with white foods such as rice, milk, yoghurt and white fruit. White or cream clothing, avoiding harsh speech, and a ghee lamp before Lakshmi on Friday evening with the Shri Suktam or Lakshmi Ashtottara Shatanamavali are customary. It is offered as devotion, not as treatment, and anyone with a health condition should ask a doctor first.

Worship of the feminine divine in any form (Lakshmi, Saraswati, Parvati, or the local Devi) aligns with Venus’s deepest meaning, Shakti, the creative feminine power.

Temple

The main Venus temple is the Kanjanur Shukra Temple (Agneeswarar Temple) near Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu, one of the Navagraha shrines, visited on a Friday with abhishekam. For those who cannot travel, any Lakshmi or Devi temple on Fridays with white flowers, sweets and perfume is the usual alternative.

Gemstone

A last resort, not a first step. Consider a stone only after the whole chart has been read, including this planet’s dignity and the dasha you are running.

The traditional gemstone is Diamond (Heera), described as at least one carat, eye-clean, set in silver or platinum and worn on the ring finger of the right hand on a Friday morning. White Sapphire (Safed Pukhraj) and White Topaz are the usual alternatives, energised with the Venus mantra before wearing.

Important: Gemstones amplify the planet’s energy, for better or worse, and should only be worn after consulting the full chart. Use the ascendant table above: for an Aries ascendant, for example, Venus rules the 2nd and 7th, both maraka houses, which asks for careful assessment before any stone is prescribed.

  1. Get a sidereal (Lahiri) chart and note Venus’s sign, house and nakshatra.
  2. Open the full page for the sign from the table above.
  3. Look up your ascendant in the house table to see which houses Venus carries.
  4. Check combustion, retrograde motion and the aspects Venus receives. Venus with Mercury is read as skilled and communicative, Venus with Saturn as slow-building and enduring, and neither is the feared combination that popular astrology makes it out to be.
  5. Read the other planets in the signs to complete the picture.

Venus among the nine

Venus is one of nine voices. The sibling guides cover how each graha expresses through the twelve signs:

A placement shows most strongly in the planet’s own period. The Venus Mahadasha guide explains the years Venus runs your chart and each of its nine sub-periods. Where Venus sits as the lord of a house is covered in house lords in houses.
