In shortJupiter shows how a person seeks wisdom, dharma and growth, governing higher learning, children, wealth and the capacity for genuine grace across whichever sign it occupies. Its expression shifts hugely with dignity, from exaltation in Cancer and command in Sagittarius or Pisces to debilitation in Capricorn, and further shaped by house lordship, aspects and its sixteen-year mahadasha.

Jupiter (Guru, Brihaspati) takes about a year to cross each sign, and the sign he sits in at your birth sets the tone for how you seek wisdom, meaning and growth. He is strongest in Cancer, Sagittarius and Pisces, weakest in Capricorn, and comfortable or strained in the rest depending on whether the sign’s lord is his friend or enemy. This page explains that logic and links to the twelve sign pages, which carry the full reading of each.

Brihaspati, the guru of the devas, and what he stands for

Brihaspati, son of the sage Angiras, is the teacher of the devas, as Shukracharya is the teacher of the asuras. The tradition remembers him as a priest and strategist who earned his place through discipline, and as a figure with a wound: the Puranas say the Moon carried off his wife Tara, and their son was Budha (Mercury). Astrologers read this as the root of the Jupiter-Mercury enmity. Guru is explained as gu, darkness, and ru, remover.

These are traditional associations, not predictions. Speak to a doctor about any health concern.

Jupiter sign by sign: dignity, lord and the page for each

Each sign below shows who rules it, how Jupiter relates to that lord, and the single idea of the placement. The sign relation follows from Jupiter’s friendships: the Sun, Moon and Mars are his friends, Mercury and Venus his enemies, and Saturn is neutral to him.

Sign Lord Jupiter’s footing Core of the placement Full article
Aries (Mesha) Mars Friend’s sign Wisdom that acts: initiative, courage, and the risk of impatience Jupiter in Aries
Taurus (Vrishabha) Venus Enemy’s sign A grounded, material philosophy; values tied to comfort and security Jupiter in Taurus
Gemini (Mithuna) Mercury Enemy’s sign Many ideas and a versatile mind; depth takes deliberate effort Jupiter in Gemini
Cancer (Karka) Moon Exalted Compassionate, nurturing wisdom; Jupiter at his best Jupiter in Cancer
Leo (Simha) Sun Friend’s sign Dignified, confident counsel and moral authority Jupiter in Leo
Virgo (Kanya) Mercury Enemy’s sign Analytical, service-minded wisdom; a tendency to over-criticise Jupiter in Virgo
Libra (Tula) Venus Enemy’s sign A diplomatic sense of fairness; decisions weighed at length Jupiter in Libra
Scorpio (Vrishchika) Mars Friend’s sign Depth, research and a gift for transformation Jupiter in Scorpio
Sagittarius (Dhanu) Jupiter Own sign and moolatrikona Philosophy and dharma lived out loud Jupiter in Sagittarius
Capricorn (Makara) Saturn Debilitated Faith that has to be tested and earned Jupiter in Capricorn
Aquarius (Kumbha) Saturn Neutral sign Wisdom directed at the collective and at reform Jupiter in Aquarius
Pisces (Meena) Jupiter Own sign Spiritual surrender and contemplative grace Jupiter in Pisces

Grouped by element, the three fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) all have lords friendly to Jupiter, so he is never in hostile territory there. The earth and air signs are the more mixed: Taurus, Virgo, Gemini and Libra are enemy signs, while Capricorn and Aquarius are Saturn’s neutral ones. In water, Cancer and Pisces are his best placements and Scorpio is friendly.

The two extremes: Jupiter exalted in Cancer, Jupiter fallen in Capricorn

Cancer. The exaltation point is 5 degrees of Cancer. Cancer’s lord is the Moon, a friend, and the sign’s themes of care, home and feeling suit a planet that stands for generosity and counsel. Tradition reads an exalted Jupiter as the most protective form of the planet.

Capricorn. The mirror point is 5 degrees of Capricorn. The sign belongs to Saturn, who is neutral to Jupiter, but its austere, practical manner works against Jupiter’s open optimism. Tradition reads this as a placement of effort: wisdom arrives later and by a harder road, and faith is tested before it settles. Nakshatras in Capricorn are Uttara Ashadha (Sun-ruled), Shravana (Moon-ruled) and Dhanishta (Mars-ruled), and some teachers note that the friendly Sun, Moon or Mars as nakshatra lord eases the sign.

Neecha Bhanga is the classical idea that a debilitation can be cancelled. Lists of the conditions vary between teachers. Two commonly cited are that Saturn, the lord of Capricorn, stands in a kendra from the Lagna or the Moon, and that Mars, which is exalted in Capricorn, stands in a kendra from the Lagna or the Moon. Whether it applies needs the whole chart, not the sign alone.

Sagittarius and Pisces are Jupiter’s own signs. Sagittarius, the first 10 degrees of which are his moolatrikona, is read as an outward, teaching Jupiter. Pisces is read as an inward, devotional one. Both, with Cancer, are the signs where he can form Hamsa Yoga when placed in a kendra, one of the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas.

Jupiter’s nakshatras and the layer under the sign

A sign gives the landscape; the nakshatra gives the neighbourhood. Jupiter rules three nakshatras: Punarvasu (20 degrees Gemini to 3 degrees 20 minutes Cancer), Vishakha (20 degrees Libra to 3 degrees 20 minutes Scorpio) and Purva Bhadrapada (20 degrees Aquarius to 3 degrees 20 minutes Pisces). When he stands in one of them, even within an enemy or neutral sign, he is read as being in a pocket of his own territory.

Within a sign the nakshatra lord adds a second filter. Jupiter in Cancer in Pushya (Saturn-ruled) and in Ashlesha (Mercury-ruled) are both exalted by sign yet read quite differently. The pada, a quarter of 3 degrees 20 minutes, then fixes the navamsa sign. Pushya’s first pada falls in the Leo navamsa and its fourth in the Scorpio navamsa. Vargottama, the same sign in the rashi and the navamsa, falls in Cancer at Punarvasu’s fourth pada.

Jupiter’s gaze: the 5th, 7th and 9th from his sign

Jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th houses from the house he occupies, counted inclusively. From the 11th he reaches the 3rd, 5th and 7th. From the 1st he reaches the 5th, 7th and 9th. The aspects are traditionally read as protective for the houses they fall on. A Jupiter in Capricorn that receives Saturn’s aspect is read differently from one afflicted by Rahu, so aspects and conjunctions belong in every sign reading.

Which houses Jupiter rules for each ascendant

Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces, so the houses he governs depend on the ascendant. This is the same pairing as in the standard lordship table, and it often matters more than the sign he is in.

Ascendant Jupiter rules Ascendant Jupiter rules
Aries 9th and 12th Libra 3rd and 6th
Taurus 8th and 11th Scorpio 2nd and 5th
Gemini 7th and 10th Sagittarius 1st and 4th
Cancer 6th and 9th Capricorn 3rd and 12th
Leo 5th and 8th Aquarius 2nd and 11th
Virgo 4th and 7th Pisces 1st and 10th

Sixteen years of Jupiter: sub-periods and the Jupiter return

The Jupiter Mahadasha lasts 16 years. Each sub-period is 16 years multiplied by the sub-period planet’s years, divided by 120. The detailed guide is on the Jupiter Mahadasha page.

Sub-period Duration
Jupiter-Jupiter 2 years, 1 month, 18 days
Jupiter-Saturn 2 years, 6 months, 12 days
Jupiter-Mercury 2 years, 3 months, 6 days
Jupiter-Ketu 11 months, 6 days
Jupiter-Venus 2 years, 8 months
Jupiter-Sun 9 months, 18 days
Jupiter-Moon 1 year, 4 months
Jupiter-Mars 11 months, 6 days
Jupiter-Rahu 2 years, 4 months, 24 days

A well-placed Jupiter (exalted, in his own sign, or comfortable in a friend’s sign and a good house) is read as giving a period of study, family growth and a settled role as adviser. A debilitated or afflicted Jupiter, or one ruling a dusthana for your ascendant, is read as giving over-extension, misplaced trust or friction with teachers and advisers. Jupiter-Saturn is read as expansion under restriction, and Jupiter-Venus as the old rivalry of the two gurus, with the tension between dharma and desire.

The Jupiter return, when the transiting planet comes back to its birth sign, falls at about 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72. Tradition treats each as an occasion to recommit to learning, teaching and the dharmic path the natal Jupiter points to. The third, at about 36, is the one tradition marks most.

Jupiter’s remedies: teaching, gratitude and a Thursday mantra

Jupiter’s traditional remedies are the pleasant ones: learning, teaching and generosity. They are offered as devotion, not as treatment, and none promises an outcome.

Where to start. The behavioural remedies come first because they cost nothing and act on the pattern itself. Mantra and giving come next. Temple visits and rituals are traditional and optional. A gemstone comes last, and only after a full reading of your chart: never as a first response to a single placement, because the wrong stone can strengthen the very thing it was meant to calm.

  1. Teach something. Share what you know, mentor someone, volunteer to tutor.
  2. Respect your teachers. Visit them, thank them, seek their blessings.
  3. Study wisdom texts. The Gita, the Upanishads or any sincere tradition of wisdom.
  4. Give with joy. Time, attention and money, without strings.
  5. Keep your finances honest. Jupiter governs wealth, and tradition treats honesty about money as a Jupiter remedy.

Mantra:

Om Graam Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah

A simpler alternative for daily practice:

Om Brim Brihaspataye Namah

The classical full count of the beej mantra is 19,000 repetitions over about 40 days, starting on a Thursday during Jupiter hora, with a daily minimum of 108 on a turmeric-coloured (yellow) or rudraksha mala, ideally before sunrise or in the Brahma Muhurta.

Donations are made on Thursdays, preferably in Jupiter hora: chana dal (split chickpeas), turmeric (haldi), yellow cloth, jaggery (gur) and bananas.

Temples: Alangudi (Thiru Irumpoolai), the Navagraha temple of Jupiter in Tamil Nadu, with Apatsahayeswarar (Shiva) as the presiding deity; any Vishnu temple, where the Vishnu Sahasranama is recited; and any Dakshinamurthy shrine.

Gemstone

A last resort, not a first step. Consider a stone only after the whole chart has been read, including this planet’s dignity and the dasha you are running.

Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) set in gold, worn on the index finger of the right hand on a Thursday during Jupiter hora, after energising with the Jupiter mantra and washing in Ganga water, milk, or turmeric water. Traditionally it is not worn if Jupiter rules a dusthana for your ascendant, so consult a qualified Jyotishi first.

The other eight planets in the signs

No planet works alone. Each guide below does for another graha what this page does for Jupiter:

Use the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri ayanamsha) to find your Jupiter, not the tropical one. Then read the sign page, the house he occupies, the houses he rules for your ascendant and the dasha you are running.

Om Gurave Namah · Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya Namah

Jupiter through time

A placement shows most strongly in the planet’s own period. The Jupiter Mahadasha guide explains the years Jupiter runs your chart and each of its nine sub-periods. Where Jupiter sits as the lord of a house is covered in house lords in houses.
