Ketu, the South Node, marks the sign where a skill comes easily and holds little excitement. Because he always stands exactly opposite Rahu, a Ketu sign is read together with the Rahu sign across the chart: Ketu shows what is being let go, Rahu what is being reached for. The twelve pages linked below read each Ketu sign in full; this page explains how Ketu works in any sign and how to choose between the readings.
Svarbhanu’s body: why Ketu stands for what is already done
In the myth Svarbhanu drank the nectar of immortality in disguise. Vishnu’s Sudarshana Chakra divided him: the head became Rahu and the headless body became Ketu. Astrologers read the body as the part that has already taken in what the head was craving. Ketu therefore stands for completion, detachment and moksha, and for sudden events that arrive without being sought.

A planet with no sign: dispositors and nakshatras
Ketu owns no sign, so his sign reading leans on two others. The first is the dispositor, the lord of the sign he occupies: a strong, well-placed dispositor is read as steadying Ketu, a weak one as letting his effects scatter. The second is the nakshatra. For Ketu the nakshatra is often called his real address, because the nakshatra lord filters his effect more directly than the sign lord does.
Any planet joined with Ketu is read as becoming more instinctive and more detached, with its worldly results muted. A planet that aspects him shapes how the karmic inheritance is felt: Saturn’s aspect deepens discipline, Jupiter’s brings support, Mars’s sharpens the cutting quality.

This table is the index to the sign pages and also the axis map. Ketu in a sign always has Rahu in the opposite sign; the two cannot be read apart.

Two schools on Ketu’s dignity, and what each means for the signs
Because Ketu owns no sign, his exaltation and debilitation rest on tradition, and the schools differ. The major tradition exalts him in Scorpio and debilitates him in Taurus. The alternate tradition exalts him in Sagittarius and debilitates him in Gemini. Each school pairs with a school for Rahu: Ketu exalted in Scorpio goes with Rahu exalted in Taurus, and Ketu exalted in Sagittarius with Rahu exalted in Gemini. A reading should say which school it follows and not mix the two.
By element, tradition reads Ketu through instinct and will in fire signs, through practical competence and material detachment in earth signs, through the mind in air signs, and through feeling and depth in water signs. The signs most associated with a quiet, inward Ketu are Scorpio, Sagittarius and Pisces. The signs where tradition expects friction are those that prize accumulation, Taurus (possessions) and Gemini (information), because accumulation runs against Ketu’s tendency to release.
Ketu in the nakshatras of the other planets
Ketu’s own nakshatras are Ashwini (0 to 13 degrees 20 minutes Aries), Magha (0 to 13 degrees 20 minutes Leo) and Moola (0 to 13 degrees 20 minutes Sagittarius). All three are at the start of fire signs and are linked with origins, ancestry and roots. Elsewhere, the nakshatra lord gives the flavour:
- Sun (Krittika, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha): detachment meets the need for identity; themes of the father and authority.
- Moon (Rohini, Hasta, Shravana): emotional patterns and sensitivity; the mother.
- Mars (Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta): Ketu’s cutting quality sharpened; decisive action with little attachment to the result.
- Mercury (Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati): a shrewd, probing mind turned inward.
- Jupiter (Punarvasu, Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada): a strongly spiritual leaning; teachers and seekers.
- Venus (Bharani, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha): tension between beauty and emptiness; art, pleasure and relationships.
- Saturn (Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada): discipline and austerity; the ascetic path.
- Rahu (Ardra, Swati, Shatabhisha): both nodes share territory, and past and future feel entangled.
Seven years of Ketu: the mahadasha and its sub-periods
The Ketu Mahadasha lasts 7 years, and the fuller guide is the Ketu Mahadasha page. Tradition reads it as a period of withdrawal: things that once mattered feel hollow, and interest turns to meditation, study of the inner life, pilgrimage and quiet. Each sub-period is 7 years multiplied by the sub-period planet’s years, divided by 120.
| Sub-period | Duration | Traditional emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Ketu-Ketu | 4 months, 27 days | The opening: pure detachment |
| Ketu-Venus | 1 year, 2 months | Recalibrating love and comfort |
| Ketu-Sun | 4 months, 6 days | Questions of identity and ego |
| Ketu-Moon | 7 months | Emotional upheaval; mother themes |
| Ketu-Mars | 4 months, 27 days | Sharp, decisive cutting away |
| Ketu-Rahu | 1 year, 18 days | The axis fully active; past against future |
| Ketu-Jupiter | 11 months, 6 days | Guidance and counsel; a teacher may appear |
| Ketu-Saturn | 1 year, 1 month, 9 days | Austerity and patience |
| Ketu-Mercury | 11 months, 27 days | A rethinking of old problems |
Tradition says the way through is non-resistance and some regular practice, whether meditation, mantra, service or silence. Ketu is traditionally linked with symptoms that are hard to pin down, and anyone with a health concern should speak to a doctor. The period can feel like loss at first and clarity afterwards, and it is not a prediction for any one chart.
Age 48 and the Ketu returns
By one common list Ketu matures at about 48. Before then his effects tend to be read as things that happen to you; after it, as something you can work with. The nodal cycle is about 18.6 years, so Ketu returns to his birth sign at about 18 to 19, 37 and 55 to 56. A half-cycle, when the nodes reverse, falls at about 9, 27 to 28 and 46 to 47. Tradition reads the returns as times of review in the matters of the Ketu house and sign.
Quiet remedies for Ketu
These are offered as devotion, not as treatment, and none promises an outcome.
Where to start. The behavioural remedies come first because they cost nothing and act on the pattern itself. Mantra and giving come next. Temple visits and rituals are traditional and optional. A gemstone comes last, and only after a full reading of your chart: never as a first response to a single placement, because the wrong stone can strengthen the very thing it was meant to calm.
- A daily silent sitting. Even ten minutes of breath awareness or mantra meditation.
- Notice what comes too easily. The skills that need no effort and the fears with no source in your life are Ketu’s traces.
- Release one attachment on purpose: a habit, a possession or a belief.
- Serve without credit. Anonymous help and charity.
- Time with dogs, the animal tradition gives to Ketu: feeding strays or caring for a pet.
Mantra:
Om Sraam Sreem Sraum Sah Ketave Namah
Traditionally chanted 108 times daily, ideally in Ketu’s hora or on Tuesdays and Saturdays. A simpler form:
Om Ketave Namah
The Ganesha mantra, Om Gam Ganapataye Namah, is also used, as Ganesha is Ketu’s deity.
Donations: brown or grey blankets, sesame seeds (til), seven-grain mixtures, food for stray dogs, gifts to monasteries and meditation centres, and help for the elderly, especially maternal grandparents.
Temples: Keezhaperumpallam (Naganathaswamy Temple) in Tamil Nadu, the Navagraha temple dedicated to Ketu; and any Ganesha temple.
Gemstone: Cat’s Eye (Lehsunia)
A last resort, not a first step. Consider a stone only after the whole chart has been read, including this planet’s dignity and the dasha you are running.
Cat’s Eye (Chrysoberyl) is Ketu’s gemstone, and tradition treats it with particular care because Ketu intensifies whatever pattern he touches. Only wear it on the explicit recommendation of a qualified Jyotishi who has examined the full birth chart.
- Set in silver or panchdhatu, worn on the middle finger or ring finger
- Minimum 3 carats of high quality, with a clear chatoyant band
- First worn on a Tuesday or Saturday during Ketu’s hora
- A trial of 3 to 7 days before long-term wear
- Not worn together with Ruby (Sun) or Pearl (Moon)
How to use this guide with your own chart
- Find Ketu’s sign in your sidereal chart (not the tropical one), and read the page for it.
- Check Rahu in the opposite sign and read that page as well.
- Note Ketu’s nakshatra and the nakshatra lord.
- Look at the sign lord’s condition, and at the house Ketu is in.
- Note the planets that join or aspect him.
