Jupiter in Capricorn is Jupiter in its sign of debilitation, with the deepest point at 5 degrees. Faith, optimism and easy good fortune do not come naturally here; the native usually has to earn trust, authority and meaning through effort, patience and visible results. How hard this feels depends heavily on Saturn, the lord of Capricorn, and on whether the chart contains one of the classical conditions that cancel the debilitation.
Why Capricorn Is Jupiter’s Sign of Fall
Jupiter is exalted in Cancer, with its highest point at 5 degrees, and debilitated in the opposite sign, Capricorn, at 5 degrees. Cancer is a watery, nurturing sign ruled by the Moon, a friend of Jupiter. Capricorn is an earthy, movable sign ruled by Saturn, which Jupiter treats as neutral.
Jupiter stands for faith, wisdom, teachers, children, dharma and expansion. Capricorn stands for effort, structure, duty, time and what can be proved to work. Placed here, Jupiter cannot simply trust; it is asked to justify itself in practical terms.

One detail is often overlooked. From Capricorn, Jupiter’s 7th aspect falls on Cancer, its own exaltation sign. Its 5th aspect falls on Taurus and its 9th on Virgo. So even in its fall, Jupiter protects the house holding Cancer, and that house often becomes an area where the native’s better qualities show.
How Debilitated Jupiter Thinks and Believes
The psychology of this placement has a few recurring features.
Faith that has to be tested. The native rarely accepts teachings on authority alone. Belief tends to come after experience, and some natives pass through a skeptical or disillusioned phase before arriving at a faith of their own. What they believe in later life is often more personal and more durable for having been tested.
Wisdom through competence. Knowledge for this native is proven by what it achieves. They tend to respect people who can do things, and they want their own ideas to work in practice.
Doubt about the right to teach. Many natives with Jupiter in Capricorn feel they must earn the right to advise or lead. They may wait too long before claiming expertise, or they may overcompensate with rigid rules.
Neecha Bhanga: When the Fall Is Cancelled
Classical texts, including Phaladeepika, give rules by which a debilitation is cancelled, a condition called neecha bhanga. When these rules apply strongly, the placement is read as rising from difficulty to a good result, sometimes called neecha bhanga raja yoga. The conditions most commonly applied to Jupiter in Capricorn are:
- Saturn, the lord of the sign of fall, in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th) from the Lagna or the Moon.
- The Moon, lord of Cancer where Jupiter is exalted, in a kendra from the Lagna or the Moon.
- Mars, the planet exalted in Capricorn, in a kendra from the Lagna or the Moon.
- Saturn aspecting Jupiter, the lord of the sign looking at the debilitated planet.
Neecha bhanga is not automatic. Astrologers weigh how many conditions apply, how strong the planets involved are, and which dashas the native runs.
Saturn, the Lord Who Holds Jupiter’s Results
Because Saturn rules Capricorn, Saturn’s condition shapes everything Jupiter does here.
When Saturn is strong, in its own signs Capricorn or Aquarius, exalted in Libra, or well placed in a kendra or trikona without heavy affliction, it gives debilitated Jupiter a working structure. Delays still come, but they tend to serve a purpose, and effort produces lasting results.
When Saturn is weak, debilitated in Aries or heavily afflicted, Jupiter’s struggles are felt more sharply. Faith may be harder to find, and material progress slower.
When Saturn is in Sagittarius or Pisces, the two planets exchange signs, a parivartana yoga. Each planet then behaves partly as if it were in its own sign, and the debilitation is significantly modified. This is one of the most important configurations to look for.
Jupiter in Capricorn for Each Ascendant
The house Jupiter occupies, and the houses it rules, shape how the debilitation shows up.

The Three Nakshatras of Makara
Uttara Ashadha, padas 2 to 4 (0° to 10° Capricorn)
Lord: the Sun. Deity: the Vishvedevas, the universal gods. The exact point of debilitation, 5 degrees, falls here. Uttara Ashadha is associated with lasting, later victory, and the Sun, a friend of Jupiter, gives self respect and moral purpose. Governance, administration and law suit this section, where authority is earned through integrity.
Shravana (10° to 23°20’ Capricorn)
Lord: the Moon. Deity: Vishnu. Shravana means hearing, and it is the nakshatra of learning by listening. The Moon is a friend of Jupiter and the lord of its exaltation sign, so this is generally the gentlest part of Capricorn for Jupiter. The native often gains wisdom by listening carefully and learning from tradition. Counselling, teaching, music and research suit it. The risk is passivity.
Dhanishta, padas 1 and 2 (23°20’ to 30° Capricorn)
Lord: Mars. Deity: the Ashta Vasus. Mars is a friend of Jupiter and is exalted in this sign, so a strong natal Mars can support Jupiter here considerably. Dhanishta is associated with wealth, rhythm and achievement. Jupiter here proves its wisdom through accomplishment in fields such as engineering, finance, sport or music. The risk is letting achievement replace inner growth.
Careers Built Slowly and Solidly
Jupiter in Capricorn often produces professionals who start slowly and build durable careers. The debilitation more often appears as delayed recognition than as lack of ability. Fields that commonly suit the placement include:
- Administration and management, where vision has to be turned into procedure
- Finance, banking and accounting, where judgment about value meets discipline
- Government and public service, bringing ethical purpose to institutions
- Law, compliance and governance, joining principle with structure
- Engineering, architecture and property, building things that last
Quiet competence is often overlooked early and valued later, and Saturn periods frequently bring visible progress.
Relationships With a Sober Heart
In relationships, Jupiter in Capricorn tends to be serious and realistic. The native evaluates partners on reliability and shared values as well as chemistry, and takes commitment seriously. Marriage may come later than average, or the partner may be older, more established or more traditional.
The challenge is warmth. The native may fulfil every practical duty of partnership while finding it harder to express joy, tenderness or playfulness. Growth comes from learning that a partner needs a companion who enjoys the relationship, not only one who maintains it.
Body, Bones and Mood
Classical associations link Capricorn to the knees, joints and bones, Saturn to chronic and slow developing conditions, and Jupiter to the liver and fat metabolism. Readings of this placement therefore mention attention to joints and teeth, sluggish digestion or weight changes, and the possibility of low mood when Jupiter’s optimism is compressed.
A note on this section
This describes a tendency the classical texts associate with this placement. It is not a diagnosis, and a chart cannot tell whether any of it is true of you now. If you are struggling, talk to a person before a chart. In India, Tele-MANAS is free and open around the clock on 14416, and 14446 is the national de-addiction helpline. Elsewhere, a doctor or your local emergency number.
Regular routines, steady exercise, moderate meals and preventive care tend to suit this placement better than extreme programmes.
Jupiter’s Dasha and Its Transit Through Makara
Jupiter mahadasha, 16 years. For a debilitated Jupiter, this period often begins with constraint: slower progress, tension with authority or institutions, or questioning of beliefs. Where neecha bhanga conditions are present, and especially where Saturn is strong, the period tends to shift toward solid achievement as it goes on. The outcome depends on Jupiter’s house, lordships and navamsa.
Jupiter’s transit through Capricorn. Jupiter returns to Capricorn roughly every twelve years. For natives with natal Jupiter here, this return tends to bring a review of beliefs, career foundations and long term commitments.
Remedies for Jupiter in Capricorn
Where to start. The behavioural remedies come first because they cost nothing and act on the pattern itself. Mantra and giving come next. Temple visits and rituals are traditional and optional. A gemstone comes last, and only after a full reading of your chart: never as a first response to a single placement, because the wrong stone can strengthen the very thing it was meant to calm.
Behavioural Remedies
- Build something that lasts, such as a skill, a household, a business or an institution. Construction suits Saturn’s sign and gives Jupiter a channel.
- Honour teachers and elders. Seek mentors and acknowledge those who taught you.
- Treat patience as a discipline, working steadily without needing immediate reward.
- Feed or serve the elderly on Thursdays and Saturdays, joining Jupiter’s day with Saturn’s.
Mantra
- Jupiter beej mantra: Om Graam Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah, 108 times on Thursdays. Regularity matters more than intensity.
- Guru Gayatri: Om Vrishabadhwajaya Vidmahe Gruni Hastaya Dheemahi Tanno Guruh Prachodayat.
- Vishnu mantra: Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya, connected to Shravana’s deity.
- Saturn mantra: Om Sham Shanaischaraya Namah on Saturdays, to support the dispositor.
Donations
| Item | When | To whom |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow cloth, turmeric, chana dal | Thursday | Teachers, temples or those in need |
| Black sesame, mustard oil | Saturday | Temple, or labourers |
| Blankets or warm clothing | Saturday, especially in winter | The elderly or homeless |
Gemstone
A last resort, not a first step. Consider a stone only after the whole chart has been read, including this planet’s dignity and the dasha you are running.
Yellow sapphire for a debilitated Jupiter needs especially careful analysis. Strengthening a debilitated planet with a gem is generally avoided unless neecha bhanga is clearly present and Jupiter is a functional benefic for the ascendant, because otherwise the stone can amplify the difficulties. Some astrologers instead consider blue sapphire to strengthen Saturn, the dispositor, but Saturn’s stone is also suitable only for some charts and needs equally careful assessment.
Classical Readings of Jupiter in Makara
A note on reading these verses: they are terse and blunt, as texts of their time are, and they were written with a man’s chart in mind. Each speaks of one factor taken alone. No astrologer reads a chart from a single verse, and nothing here is a prediction about you or your family.
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS): BPHS (ch. 3, verses 49 and 50, Santhanam’s edition) places Jupiter’s debilitation in Capricorn, the seventh sign from his exaltation sign Cancer, with the deepest fall at 5 degrees. We found no verse in BPHS on the results of Jupiter in Capricorn, and the points about education, teachers and early wealth are modern readings.
Phaladeepika of Mantreshwara: Phaladeepika gives a general reading for any planet in its fall (ch. 9, verse 18, V. Subrahmanya Sastri’s translation), and it is severe: a fall from position, humiliation, debt and low company during that planet’s period. It has no verse on Jupiter in Capricorn in particular. It does give rules by which a fall is cancelled (ch. 7, verses 26 to 29): for instance, when the lord of the sign of fall, or the lord of the sign of exaltation, stands in an angle from the Lagna or the Moon, or when the fallen planet is aspected by the lord of its sign, the verses promise a king-like result. For Jupiter these lords are Saturn and the Moon.
Saravali of Kalyana Varma: Saravali (ch. 27, verses 19 and 20, Santhanam’s translation) gives a hard reading for Jupiter in Capricorn: grief, difficulty, mean conduct, poverty and a life of service to others. It does not mention eventual success through effort, so that idea is later practice.
Brihat Jataka of Varahamihira: Brihat Jataka (ch. XVIII, sloka 13, V. Subrahmanya Sastri’s translation) is brief and severe: with Jupiter in Makara (Capricorn) the person is base, poor and unhappy.
Practitioners today read Jupiter in Capricorn as a slow-maturing placement in which discipline and timing matter, and see the cancellation rules above as the reason the placement can improve over a lifetime. We found no passage on the placement in the Uttara Kalamrita copy we searched.
The Stone That Holds the Temple
Before judging this placement, check two things: the condition of Saturn and Jupiter’s navamsa. If Jupiter falls in Cancer, Sagittarius or Pisces in the D9, its deeper strength is better than the sign suggests; if it is debilitated there too, the work is heavier. Beyond that, Jupiter in Capricorn asks for wisdom that has been tested and built. It does not deny faith or good fortune; it asks that they be earned and made practical, and what is built that way tends to stay.
