In shortVenus Mahadasha lasts 20 years, the longest of the nine Vimshottari periods, and it follows Ketu and leads into the Sun. Its core themes are relationships, comfort, money, beauty and the arts. How it goes depends mainly on Venus's dignity, the houses it rules and occupies, and the antardasha running at the time.

Venus Mahadasha is the period ruled by Shukra, the planet of love, pleasure, beauty and refined living. It lasts 20 years, which makes it the longest of the nine periods in the Vimshottari system, and for many people it covers most of their adult working and family life. If you have just learned that you are entering it, or that you are already inside it, you are probably asking whether it is a good time and what it will mean for marriage, money and ambition.

The honest answer is that it depends on the chart. Venus is a natural benefic, but that one label does not decide the period. What decides it is where Venus sits, what it owns, how strong it is, and which smaller sub-periods, the antardashas, pass through it. This guide explains the period as a whole and links to a separate page for each of its nine antardashas.

At a glance

Point Detail
Length 20 years
Place in the 120-year cycle 2nd of 9 in the standard order (Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury)
Comes after Ketu Mahadasha (7 years)
Followed by Sun Mahadasha (6 years)
Natural significations Love and marriage, spouse (especially the wife in a male chart), comfort, vehicles, jewellery, art, music, fashion, sensual enjoyment, diplomacy
Nakshatras ruled Bharani, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha
Own signs Taurus and Libra; exalted in Pisces, debilitated in Virgo
Yogakaraka for Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants

A yogakaraka is a planet that rules both a kendra (an angle house: 1, 4, 7 or 10) and a trikona (a trine house: 1, 5 or 9) for that ascendant. Such a planet is treated as especially supportive of the chart’s overall direction. For Capricorn, Venus rules the 5th and 10th houses. For Aquarius, it rules the 4th and 9th.

Only the first Mahadasha in a lifetime is partial. If your birth Moon falls in Bharani, Purva Phalguni or Purva Ashadha, you are born into Venus Mahadasha with part of its 20 years already spent. Everyone else meets the full 20 years when their turn comes.

What the period tends to bring

The Mahadasha lord sets the agenda for the whole period. Venus’s agenda is about what we value, who we value it with, and what we are willing to spend to enjoy life. Across most charts you may notice the following themes become more prominent.

Relationships move to the front. Venus is the karaka, the natural significator, of marriage and partnership. Many people meet a partner, deepen a bond, marry, or re-evaluate a relationship during Venus periods. This is a tendency, not a promise: a chart with a weak 7th house or a badly placed Venus may show the same theme as a period of learning about what you want from closeness rather than a wedding.

Money and comfort get attention. Venus governs the material comfort that makes life pleasant: a better home, a vehicle, good clothes, travel for enjoyment. It is read as a planet of earning through pleasant means, such as design, hospitality, media, beauty, luxury goods, the arts and client-facing work. When Venus is connected to the 2nd, 11th or 10th houses, these themes often shape income.

Taste sharpens. People often become more aware of aesthetics, music, cooking, home decoration and personal presentation. Creative talents that were dormant may find an outlet.

Harmony is sought, sometimes at a cost. Venus prefers peace and pleasantness. The gift of this is diplomacy and charm. The shadow side is avoiding hard conversations, overindulging, or drifting into comfort when effort is needed.

When it goes well and when it asks more

Signs of a supportive Venus period

Classical reading looks at several factors together.

  • Dignity. Venus in Taurus, Libra or Pisces is generally strong, and exaltation in Pisces is the deepest form of this. A Venus in one of these signs, placed in a kendra, can form Malavya Yoga, one of the five great Pancha Mahapurusha yogas. See Malavya Yoga for the conditions.
  • Houses. Venus in a kendra or trikona, or in the 2nd and 11th houses, tends to channel its energy into stable, visible results. Its position from the Moon matters too, because classical practice reads a chart from both the ascendant and the Moon.
  • Functional nature. For Taurus, Libra, Capricorn, Aquarius, Gemini and Virgo ascendants Venus rules at least one good house or trikona, and is often treated as a helpful planet. For Capricorn and Aquarius it is a yogakaraka.
  • Aspects and company. Association with Mercury, Saturn or Jupiter’s aspect is generally seen as supportive. Close conjunction with the Sun (combustion) is usually read as reducing Venus’s ease, and a Venus hemmed in by malefics asks for more patience.
  • Navamsa. The navamsa, the ninth-harmonic chart used to judge inner strength, should not contradict the birth chart. A Venus strong in both is generally read as dependable.

Where it tends to ask more

Venus rules the 6th, 8th or 12th house for several ascendants: it is the 6th lord for Taurus and Sagittarius, the 8th lord for Libra and Pisces, and the 12th lord for Gemini and Scorpio. A Venus in a dusthana (6th, 8th or 12th house) or debilitated in Virgo is often read as asking for more care in relationships, money management and health habits.

When it asks more, it is usually in familiar ways: relationship friction or misunderstandings, overspending, indulgence, or restlessness about commitment. These are tendencies to watch for, not outcomes that are fixed. The usual remedy is practical: clear money habits, honest communication, and moderation. Many astrologers also stress that a hard Venus period can produce real refinement of values, because it makes you choose what you actually want.

The nine antardashas

Each Venus Mahadasha divides into nine antardashas (sub-periods), starting with Venus’s own and following the standard order. The length of each is the Mahadasha length of 20 years multiplied by that lord’s years and divided by 120. The lengths below are approximate.

Order Antardasha About how long Theme in one line
1 Venus-Venus 3 years, 4 months Pure Venus: relationships, comfort and taste in full
2 Venus-Sun 1 year Pleasure meets authority and ego; status and father figures
3 Venus-Moon 1 year, 8 months Emotion, home, mother and care in relationships
4 Venus-Mars 1 year, 2 months Desire and drive; passion, property and action
5 Venus-Rahu 3 years Ambition for glamour, foreign ties, unconventional paths
6 Venus-Jupiter 2 years, 8 months Wisdom and values; marriage, children, learning, growth
7 Venus-Saturn 3 years, 2 months Commitment, structure and slow, lasting gains
8 Venus-Mercury 2 years, 10 months Communication, business, skill and social ease
9 Venus-Ketu 1 year, 2 months Detachment, letting go and a reset before the Sun period

Together the nine add up to the full 20 years. The Venus-Saturn and Venus-Rahu sub-periods are among the longest, and the Venus-Sun sub-period is the shortest. Because the order is fixed, you can place any date inside the Mahadasha by adding the lengths in turn from the start.

The antardasha lord brings its own matters into focus within Venus’s larger agenda. Venus-Saturn, for example, is read as Venus themes (relationships, money) filtered through Saturn’s themes (responsibility, delay, endurance). The page for each pair explains that combination in detail and how it reads by ascendant.

By ascendant

The houses Venus rules depend on the rising sign. Those houses tell you which departments of life the Venus period is asked to manage. The table lists the houses each ascendant gets, with a brief tendency for the period overall.

Ascendant Venus rules What Venus Mahadasha tends to emphasise
Aries 2nd and 7th Income, family and partnership; Venus is a maraka here, so mind health habits
Taurus 1st and 6th Self and body; service, debts and daily routine need upkeep
Gemini 5th and 12th Creativity, romance and children; expenses and foreign matters
Cancer 4th and 11th Home, comfort and gains; friendships and networks
Leo 3rd and 10th Effort, skills and communication; career and public standing
Virgo 2nd and 9th Wealth and speech together with fortune and higher learning
Libra 1st and 8th Personality and self-image; transformation and shared resources
Scorpio 7th and 12th Partnership and contracts; expenses, distance and withdrawal
Sagittarius 6th and 11th Service, competition and health; gains and social circles
Capricorn 5th and 10th Yogakaraka: creativity, intelligence and a strong career rise
Aquarius 4th and 9th Yogakaraka: home, peace of mind, fortune and mentors
Pisces 3rd and 8th Initiative and siblings; hidden matters and sudden change

Venus as yogakaraka for Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants is usually read as among the better Mahadashas in the chart, though the final result still depends on Venus’s dignity, house and aspects. For every other ascendant, the period is shaped by the mix of a good house and a more demanding one. Nothing in the table is fixed on its own: check the placement and strength of Venus in your actual chart.

Practices that help

Astrology offers calm, practical routines that many people find grounding during a long period. None of them is a substitute for action or for professional advice.

  • Mantra. Chanting Om Shum Shukraya Namah, or the longer Shukra beej mantra, on Fridays is the common suggestion. Even 11 or 21 repetitions, done steadily, is considered enough.
  • Charity on Friday. Offering rice, sugar, white sweets, curd or white cloth to those in need is traditional for Venus. The spirit matters more than the quantity.
  • Discipline with pleasure. Since Venus rewards enjoyment and punishes excess, simple budgeting, regular routines and moderate habits do the most practical work.
  • Honour relationships. Venus is the planet of reciprocity. Keeping promises, showing appreciation and treating the women in your life with respect are classical Venus remedies.
  • Creative practice. Music, art, cooking, gardening or any craft gives Venus a healthy channel.
  • Gemstone. Some astrologers suggest a gemstone for a well-placed Venus, but only after a full reading of the whole chart, never as an automatic step and never on the strength of one placement.

How to find your dates

The start of your Venus Mahadasha depends on the exact position of your Moon at birth: which nakshatra it was in and how far through it. That is why two people born on the same day can be running completely different periods. Birth time matters too, because the Moon moves about 13 degrees in a day.

The free kundali tool on this site lists your full Vimshottari sequence with start and end dates for the Mahadasha, the antardashas and the finer periods inside them. You can also read Mahadasha and Antardasha Explained for a worked example of how the dates are calculated.

Frequently asked questions

↳ How long is Venus Mahadasha?

Venus Mahadasha lasts 20 years, the longest of the nine Vimshottari periods. It follows Ketu Mahadasha and is followed by Sun Mahadasha. If your birth Moon is in Bharani, Purva Phalguni or Purva Ashadha, you begin life inside it and only the remaining part of the 20 years applies to you.

↳ Is Venus Mahadasha good?

Venus is a natural benefic, so its period is often associated with comfort, relationships and creative growth, but the result depends on the chart. Venus's sign, house, the houses it rules and the antardasha running all matter. It tends to be most supportive for Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants, where it is a yogakaraka, and it asks for more care when it is weak or rules difficult houses.

↳ What happens in Venus Mahadasha?

The usual themes are relationships and marriage, money and material comfort, taste, the arts and social life. Whether those show up as gains or as lessons depends on Venus's strength and placement in your chart. Many people also notice a stronger pull toward enjoyment, which is helpful in moderation and unhelpful in excess.

↳ Which antardasha is best in Venus Mahadasha?

There is no single best one for everyone. Antardashas of friendly planets, such as Venus-Saturn and Venus-Mercury, are generally read as smoother, while Venus-Sun and Venus-Moon involve enemy planets and ask for more care. The decisive factor is how each planet is placed in your own chart, so check both lords before judging a sub-period.

↳ Does Venus Mahadasha always bring marriage?

No. Venus is the natural significator of marriage, so relationship matters often come into focus, but marriage depends on the 7th house, its lord, Venus's condition and the wider timing in the chart. A Venus period can also bring a deepening of an existing partnership or a clearer sense of what you want from one.

↳ What remedies are suggested for Venus Mahadasha?

Common suggestions are chanting the Venus mantra on Fridays, giving rice, sugar or white items in charity, keeping money habits disciplined and treating partners and women with respect. Some astrologers mention a gemstone after a full chart reading, but routines and conduct come first.
