Venus (Shukra) is the planet of attachment, pleasure and the arts, and the house it occupies is where you look for sweetness, comfort and a sense of value. It is also the natural significator of marriage and partnership, and it runs the longest dasha of all, twenty years. This page is the guide to Shukra as a planet. The twelve linked pages carry the reading of each house.
Shukracharya: the teacher of the asuras behind the planet
Venus is Shukracharya, the guru of the asuras, as Jupiter is the guru of the devas. Tradition tells of several turns in his life:
- He gained the Sanjeevani Vidya, the knowledge of bringing the dead back to life, through long austerity before Shiva.
- His student Kacha, sent by the devas, learned it from him and left, and Shukracharya’s daughter Devayani, who loved Kacha, cursed him when he would not stay.
- Devayani’s later marriage to King Yayati, and the rivalry with Sharmishtha, is the traditional image of Venus’s themes: love, jealousy and attachment.
- In the Vamana story he lost an eye while trying to stop his royal student Bali from giving away the gift, which is why Shukra is described as one-eyed.
Astrologers read this as a planet that stands for love with its cost. Venus is not only comfort. It also covers the attachment, rivalry and loss that go with caring about someone.

In traditional astrology Venus is linked with the face, eyes, kidneys, skin, throat and the reproductive system. When Venus is strong, tradition reads attractiveness and vitality; when afflicted, it looks to these same areas for difficulty. These are traditional associations, not predictions. Speak to a doctor about any health concern.
Venus through the twelve houses: love, money and the shadow of each
Venus aspects the 7th house from itself, so each row also names the house across the chart that Venus looks at. Every house has its own full page.
| House | What Venus brings | The strain to watch | Full article |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Charm and an attractive presence; looks at the 7th | Leaning on other people’s approval | Venus in the 1st house |
| 2nd | A pleasant voice, money and fine things; looks at the 8th | Spending and indulgence | Venus in the 2nd house |

Which houses Venus rules for your ascendant
Venus rules Taurus and Libra, so he is lord of two houses in every chart, and the pair changes with the ascendant. This is the same pairing as in the standard lordship table.
| Ascendant | Venus rules | Ascendant | Venus rules |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 2nd and 7th | Libra | 1st and 8th |
| Taurus | 1st and 6th | Scorpio | 7th and 12th |
| Gemini | 5th and 12th | Sagittarius | 6th and 11th |
| Cancer | 4th and 11th | Capricorn | 5th and 10th |
| Leo | 3rd and 10th | Aquarius | 4th and 9th |
| Virgo | 2nd and 9th | Pisces | 3rd and 8th |
For Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants Venus is the yogakaraka, holding a kendra and a trikona together. For Taurus and Libra he is lagna lord. A Venus in the 7th is a different matter for Aries (where it is also the 2nd lord) than for Scorpio (where it is also the 12th lord).
Malavya Yoga and the condition of Venus
When Venus is in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th) in Taurus, Libra or Pisces, he forms Malavya Yoga, one of the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas. Varahamihira describes the Malavya native in the Brihat Jataka as having a face like the full moon, a body that carries a natural fragrance, and a life of comfort, learning and fame. If Venus is in a kendra in any other sign, the yoga does not form.
| Factor | Stronger Venus | Weaker Venus |
|---|---|---|
| Sign | Own sign (Taurus, Libra) or exalted (Pisces) | Debilitated (Virgo) or in an enemy’s sign (Leo, Cancer) |
| House | Kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) or trikonas (1, 5, 9) | Dusthanas (6, 8, 12) without benefic support |
| Dig Bala | In the 4th house | In the 10th house, opposite the 4th |
| Conjunctions | With Mercury or Saturn (friends) | With the Sun (combust), Mars, Rahu or Ketu |
| Aspects | From Jupiter or Mercury | From Saturn or Mars |
| Combustion | More than 10 degrees from the Sun (8 when retrograde) | Within 10 degrees of the Sun |
| Motion | Direct | Retrograde: read as a more internal, slower expression |
| Nakshatra | Bharani, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha (its own) | Gandanta points |
Why Venus and Jupiter pull in different directions
Jupiter counts Venus an enemy, while Venus counts Jupiter neutral. The two stand for different ideas of the good life: Jupiter for restraint, ceremony and scripture, Venus for experience, beauty and the world embraced. When they conjoin or aspect each other, the person feels both pulls. Tradition reads the way that tension is held as a mark of the chart.
Venus-Saturn: delayed love and durable bonds
Mercury and Saturn are Venus’s friends. Venus and Saturn together or in aspect are traditionally read as delaying marriage or love, with bonds that are tested by time and duty before they settle. When they do, tradition reads them as steady. This is a tendency to examine in the whole chart, not a rule.
Twenty years of Venus: the longest mahadasha
The Venus Mahadasha lasts 20 years, and the full guide is on the Venus Mahadasha page. Each sub-period is 20 years multiplied by the sub-period planet’s years, divided by 120.
| Sub-period | Duration | Traditional emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Venus-Venus | 3 years, 4 months | The purest Venus themes: marriage, comfort, art |
| Venus-Sun | 1 year | Authority and recognition; ego strain in relationships |
| Venus-Moon | 1 year, 8 months | Emotion in love, home, the mother |
| Venus-Mars | 1 year, 2 months | Passion and drive; tradition cautions about quarrels and impulsive spending |
| Venus-Rahu | 3 years | Unconventional relationships, foreign links, sudden change |
| Venus-Jupiter | 2 years, 8 months | Spiritual growth in love; dharma against desire |
| Venus-Saturn | 3 years, 2 months | Discipline enters love; slower, more mature bonds |
| Venus-Mercury | 2 years, 10 months | Refinement of taste; commerce and communication |
| Venus-Ketu | 1 year, 2 months | Detachment; endings and completion |
The age at which the period arrives matters. In youth it is read as emphasising romance and creative energy; in middle age, as the harvest of earlier investments; in later life, as a review of what has been loved. A well-placed Venus is read as a golden stretch, an afflicted one as a long stretch of chasing what does not satisfy. The chart and the sub-periods decide which.
The three nakshatras Shukra rules
| Nakshatra | Span | Deity | Symbol | Tone |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bharani | 13 degrees 20 minutes to 26 degrees 40 minutes Aries | Yama | The yoni | Venus alongside death and dharma: love that includes loss and transformation |
| Purva Phalguni | 13 degrees 20 minutes to 26 degrees 40 minutes Leo | Bhaga | Front legs of a bed | Pleasure, romance, rest and generosity |
| Purva Ashadha | 13 degrees 20 minutes to 26 degrees 40 minutes Sagittarius | Apas | Elephant tusk or a fan | Venus with a philosophical, purifying drive |
Venus remedies: Friday practices, mantra and Lakshmi
Venus remedies are about attunement, beauty and generosity. They are offered as devotion, not as treatment, and none promises an outcome.
Where to start. The behavioural remedies come first because they cost nothing and act on the pattern itself. Mantra and giving come next. Temple visits and rituals are traditional and optional. A gemstone comes last, and only after a full reading of your chart: never as a first response to a single placement, because the wrong stone can strengthen the very thing it was meant to calm.
- Friday fasting. A partial fast on Fridays, eating once, preferably white or sweet foods such as rice kheer, mishri or white fruit, in white or cream clothing, avoiding harsh speech. Anyone with a health condition should ask a doctor first.
- Donations on Fridays: white clothing, rice, sugar, white sweets, camphor, white sandalwood.
- Flowers. White flowers (white roses, jasmine, champa, mogra) offered to running water on Friday mornings.
- Feed white cows or offer white food to Brahmins on Fridays.
- A beautiful space. Keep your home clean and pleasant. Make something: sing, paint, dance, write, arrange flowers or cook well.
- Kanjanur temple in Tamil Nadu, the Shukra Sthalam and one of the Navagraha temples.
- Diamond or White Sapphire, on the ring finger of the right hand, set in silver or platinum, consecrated on a Friday during Shukra Hora. Consult a qualified Jyotishi before wearing: gemstone prescriptions must account for the entire chart.
Shukra Beej Mantra:
Om Draam Dreem Draum Sah Shukraya Namah
Traditionally chanted 108 times on a Friday morning, ideally in the hora of Venus, facing east or southeast, on a crystal or white sandalwood mala, and continued for 40 consecutive Fridays.
Lakshmi worship. Goddess Lakshmi is the divine feminine expression of abundance and beauty. Tradition offers white flowers (jasmine, lotus, tuberose), a ghee lamp, and the Sri Suktam or the Lakshmi Ashtottara Shatanamavali (the 108 names of Lakshmi), with the puja space kept clean and fragrant.
What the classical texts say about Venus
The classical Jyotish literature offers precise, often terse descriptions of Venus’s effects. Here are key references from the texts that could be checked:
A note on reading these verses: they are terse and blunt, as texts of their time are, and they were written with a man’s chart in mind. Each speaks of one factor taken alone. No astrologer reads a chart from a single verse, and nothing here is a prediction about you or your family.
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (attributed to Sage Parashara; Santhanam’s edition): Chapter 3, verse 28 describes Venus as charming, with a splendid physique and charming eyes, a poet, and phlegmatic and windy by humour; verses 12 to 13 say Venus governs semen, that is, potency. Its chapter on the seventh house (ch. 18, verse 3) mentions Venus in the 7th in its verses on the spouse, in the blunt terms of its time. It has no verse on Venus alone in the 4th or the 12th house.
Brihat Jataka (Varahamihira, 6th century): Chapter 20, verse 8 says that Venus in the Lagna makes the person skilled in amorous pursuits and happy. For the other houses it gives the same results as for Jupiter, with exceptions for the 5th (happy), the 7th (fond of quarrels and of sexual union) and the 12th (rich).
Phaladeepika (Mantreshwara, 13th century): Chapter 8, verses 17 to 19 give Venus in each of the twelve houses. Venus in the 2nd makes the person a poet with riches of various kinds; in the 5th, a person of immense wealth, wise and blessed with children; in the 8th, long-lived, rich and a ruler of the earth. It also gives a hard reading for Venus in the 6th (no enemies but no riches, and trouble with young women). For a planet eclipsed by the Sun’s rays, chapter 9, verse 19 gives a hard reading that applies to any planet, not to Venus alone.
Saravali (Kalyanavarma, 10th century): Chapter 4, verse 26 describes Venus as beautiful, long-handed, broad in chest and face, very seminal, splendid and sensuous. Chapter 28 gives Venus in each sign: in Pisces (verses 23 to 24) a courteous, liberal, wealthy and famous person who is dear to the king, and in Virgo (verses 11 to 12) a soft, skilful person who speaks sweetly but is not quite discriminating and lacks happiness and pleasures. Chapter 37 (verses 3 to 4) describes the Malavya yoga: thin lips, an even physique, a thin waist, a moon-like splendour, a deep voice like a tusker’s, a pleasant bodily odour and a life of seventy years, with rule over Lata, Malava and Sindhu.
Jataka Parijata (Vaidyanatha Dikshita): has no verse describing the person with Venus exalted in Pisces or debilitated in Virgo, so nothing is attributed to it here. Its chapter on planetary strength (Adhyaya II, sloka 66) says only that Venus is strong in his exaltation sign, in his own Varga and on his weekday, among other conditions.
These texts are not prescriptions: they are poetic descriptions of tendencies. Your entire chart, including aspects, conjunctions, Nakshatra placements, and divisional charts, determines the actual outcome. A single planetary placement, read in isolation, is a chapter ripped from a novel. You need the whole book.
Reading your own Venus
Look at the house Venus occupies, then its sign and dignity, the houses it rules for your ascendant, its nakshatra and the aspects it receives. Venus combust, within about 10 degrees of the Sun, is traditionally read as love and enjoyment held back by ego. Venus retrograde is read as a re-visiting of earlier attachments before a settled pattern forms. What you want, and what you will give up for it, is the clearest reading of Shukra.
Om Draam Dreem Draum Sah Shukraya Namah.
Om Kaal Bhairavaya Namah. Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya Namah.
Venus through time
A placement shows most strongly in the planet’s own period. The Venus Mahadasha guide explains the years Venus runs your chart and each of its nine sub-periods. Where Venus sits as the lord of a house is covered in house lords in houses.
