Rahu is a shadow point, not a physical planet: the place where the Moon’s path crosses the Sun’s path, moving backwards through the zodiac. Because it has no body and no sign of its own, it behaves like a mirror and an amplifier. It takes on the flavour of the planet that rules its sign, and it magnifies whatever house it sits in. Some texts name Taurus or Gemini as its sign of exaltation and Scorpio or Sagittarius as its fall, and some name Aquarius as a kind of home sign. The sources disagree, so a careful reading leans more on the dispositor and the house than on a single dignity label.
What the period tends to bring
Rahu’s core theme is hunger. Where Saturn restricts and Jupiter is satisfied, Rahu wants more, and wants it now. During its period that hunger tends to show up as a pull towards the new, the foreign, the technical or the socially higher. The details below are tendencies, not events.
Reach and relocation. Rahu is linked with crossing boundaries of country, caste, language, religion and class. Many people in this period study or work abroad, marry or partner across a cultural line, move to a large city, or find that their clients and audience sit far from where they grew up.
Unconventional work. Rahu favours fields that are newer than the textbooks: software, digital media, research, aviation, foreign trade, politics, film, investigation, anything involving screens, networks or large crowds. It is less interested in the slow and inherited path.

Astrologers usually look at the following, and the classical and modern schools weigh them a little differently.
- The dispositor. Rahu acts like the lord of its sign. If that planet is strong, well placed and friendly to the ascendant, Rahu tends to deliver through it. If that planet is weak or sits in a difficult house, the results tend to be patchier.
- The house Rahu occupies. A widely taught view is that Rahu does well in the upachaya houses (3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th), which reward effort, competition and growth over time. Kendra and trikona placements are also read favourably when the dispositor is sound.
- Conjunctions. Rahu joined to a steady, dignified planet tends to channel its energy. - Running with discipline. Regular routines, honest advisers, and money kept in boring, transparent places all tend to stabilise a planet that otherwise amplifies.
When it asks more of you
- Restlessness and scattered effort. The hunger can make it hard to finish things or feel satisfied. What helps is one or two clear goals and a habit of measuring progress.
- Sudden reversals. Rahu’s rises can come quickly, and the reversals can too. What helps is keeping a buffer, avoiding all-or-nothing bets, and not staking a whole future on a single deal or person.
- Sharp practice and misinformation. The period is associated with gloss, hype and half-truths, in other people and in our own thinking. Verify, ask for documents, and take a second opinion on anything large.

A challenging chart placement does not mean a bad 18 years. The period is long, and its early, middle and late phases often feel quite different, which is partly why the antardashas matter.

Practices that help
Astrologers who use remedies suggest calm, everyday ones first. You do not need to do all of these.
