Rahu in Capricorn, Ketu in Cancer: the dates and the axis

Rahu, the north lunar node, moves out of Aquarius and into Capricorn in late 2026, while Ketu, the south node and always exactly opposite Rahu, moves out of Leo into Cancer at the same moment. Most Indian panchangs date this crossing to 5 December 2026, though astrologers who track the node’s real, wobbling position instead of its smoothed average put it ten days earlier. Either way, the two nodes then sit on the Capricorn-Cancer axis for about eighteen months, until they move on into Sagittarius and Gemini around mid-2028.

This is a shift away from Aquarius and Leo’s themes, group belonging, technology, networks, personal recognition, and toward Capricorn and Cancer’s themes: public duty, career and structure on one side, home, mother and emotional security on the other. Every chart holds both signs somewhere, so nobody sits this transit out. What changes from person to person is which houses it falls in, whether it touches a natal planet, and whether you are living through a Rahu or Ketu dasha. Two dates, and why they differ

Both sets of figures come from Drik Panchang’s transit pages for 2025, 2026 and 2028, listed in the Sources section below. We use the mean node date, 5 December 2026, as the headline here, since that is the convention most Indian panchangs and Vimshottari dasha software use by default. If your astrologer or software works from the true node, use 25 November 2026 instead.

The two dates differ because the Moon’s orbit is not perfectly smooth. The mean node assumes a constant rate of regression, completing one circuit in about eighteen point six years. The true node tracks the node’s actual position, pulled forward and back by up to about a degree and a half as the Sun’s gravity tugs on the Moon’s tilted orbit. That wobble is why the true node crosses into Capricorn ten days before the mean node in 2026; the size of the gap changes at every sign change, so check both dates when a transit matters to you specifically.

Either way, the practical takeaway is the same: Rahu has already been moving through Aquarius since 18 May 2025 (mean) or 29 May 2025 (true), so by the time it reaches Capricorn it is a familiar guest in most charts, not a new arrival. What is new in December 2026 is the sign, and with it, the axis explained next.

How to read a node transit

A transit report that just says “Rahu is moving into Capricorn” is close to useless on its own, because a sign transit does not act on a person: it acts on a chart. Four things decide what it actually does in yours.

The house it falls in, counted twice. Count from your Moon sign to find which house Capricorn falls in for you: this is the house from Chandra Lagna, and it shapes how a transit feels, day to day. Then count from your ascendant, the sign rising at your birth: this is the house from the birth chart itself, and most texts treat it as primary for concrete events, since the ascendant is the chart’s actual reference point. Both matter; if Moon and ascendant differ, read both sections below and weigh them together.

What Rahu and Ketu each do to a house. Rahu is expansive: wherever it sits, it magnifies that house’s matters and brings appetite for them, rarely feeling satisfied even after getting what it wanted. Ketu does the opposite: it detaches from that house’s matters, often because the native has, in the common reading, already mastered them, and pulls toward completion or withdrawal rather than pursuit. Because the nodes are always exactly opposite, every chart works both ends at once: hunger in one house, release in the house directly across from it.

Conjunctions with natal planets. The nodes move backward through the zodiac, so over these eighteen months they cross the entire sign, entering at its last degree and leaving at its first. Any natal planet in Capricorn or Cancer will be conjoined by a node at some point: late-sign planets sooner, early-sign planets later. A conjunction is usually the sharpest, most specific effect of the whole transit, more so than the house placement alone.

The running dasha. The Vimshottari dasha you are in changes this transit’s weight considerably: it lands very differently on someone running a Rahu mahadasha or antardasha, where Rahu’s themes are already the main story, than on someone running a Jupiter dasha, where it is more of a subplot, and the same applies to Ketu. Rahu and Ketu are not physical planets. They are the two points where the Moon’s path crosses the Sun’s apparent path, which is why Vedic astrology calls them Chaya Grahas, shadow planets, and treats them as the axis of unfinished and mastered karma a person carries between lifetimes. The Capricorn-Cancer axis

Capricorn, Makara in Sanskrit, is the tenth sign of the zodiac and the natural home of the 10th house, Karma Bhava, career and public standing. It is an earth sign ruled by Saturn, and its themes are structure, hierarchy, patience, authority and the long, unglamorous work of building something that outlasts its builder.

Cancer, Karka in Sanskrit, sits opposite: the natural home of the 4th house, Sukha Bhava, home, mother and inner peace. It is a water sign ruled by the Moon, and its themes are emotional security, roots and the private life a person returns to once the public day is over.

Put the two together and the axis reads plainly: outward duty against inward belonging, career against home, what you owe the world against what keeps you steady enough to meet that debt. For the roughly eighteen months this transit runs, that is the tension every chart works with, in whichever houses it falls.

A widely used, though not universal, rule of thumb treats Rahu as acting somewhat like Saturn and Ketu somewhat like Mars. By that reasoning, Rahu sits fairly comfortably in Capricorn, Saturn’s own sign, one reason this transit tends to reward patient, structural ambition rather than punish it. Ketu in Cancer, Mars’s sign of debilitation, sits less comfortably, one reason the pull to withdraw from home life can feel more disorienting than most Ketu placements. If your Moon is in Aries

Rahu transits your 10th house, Karma Bhava, career and public standing. Ketu transits your 4th house, Sukha Bhava, home, mother and inner peace.

Expect an appetite for visible achievement that is hard to switch off: new responsibility, a title, a project with your name on it, or simply more attention on how your work looks from outside. Capricorn’s 10th house rewards the person who keeps showing up. The caution sits opposite, in the 4th: home life and inner peace may feel thinner than usual, not because anything is wrong, but because Ketu is quietly withdrawing energy from the need to feel settled there, which can show up as distance from family or a parent needing more from you while you have less to give.

Practical step: put one fixed, protected block of time on your home life every week before the ambition of the 10th house fills the calendar on its own. It will not fill itself back in later.

If your Moon is in Taurus

Rahu transits your 9th house, Dharma Bhava, fortune, father and higher learning. Ketu transits your 3rd house, Sahaja Bhava, courage, siblings and effort.

This combination tends to bring a hunger for meaning: further study, a teacher or mentor who changes your direction, travel, or a belief system you want to go deeper into. It is a good period to formalise that hunger into something concrete, a course, a long-planned trip, rather than leave it as restlessness. The caution is in the 3rd: effort and initiative can feel like they are running on their own, and a sibling relationship may cool or need less from you than before. Rahu in the 8th brings a pull toward the hidden and transformative: research, other people’s money, taxes, insurance, a will, or simply a fascination with what sits under the surface of things. Rahu transits your 7th house, Kalatra Bhava, spouse, partnership and business partners. Ketu transits your 1st house, Tanu Bhava, self, body and temperament, exactly where your Moon already sits.

This is one of the more charged placements in this transit, since Ketu moves through your own sign. Expect a genuine pull to detach from old ways of presenting yourself, old roles, even old habits of body and temperament, in favour of whoever you are becoming next: quietly losing interest in who you used to be. Everyone’s chart includes Capricorn and Cancer somewhere, so in one sense nobody skips this transit. In another sense, its intensity is spread very unevenly. Four groups feel it hardest.

Anyone running a Rahu or Ketu mahadasha or antardasha between December 2026 and mid-2028. The dasha lord’s transit is rarely a subplot; it tends to be the headline of whatever period it happens in, for Rahu and for Ketu alike.

Anyone with a natal planet in Capricorn or Cancer. Because the nodes move backward through the full sign, entering at its last degree and leaving at its first, a planet late in the sign is conjoined early in the transit, roughly 2026 to 2027, and one early in the sign later, 2027 to 2028. A conjunction with the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter or Saturn sharpens that planet’s themes for a few months, more than the house position alone would suggest.

Take a hypothetical chart with the Moon and Venus both natally in Capricorn, Venus late in the sign: that person already lives the 1st-house Rahu transit described above for Capricorn Moons, and sometime earlier in the transit, likely 2026 or 2027, Rahu will also sit exactly on their natal Venus, sharpening relationships, money or comfort for a few months on top of the broader identity theme.

Anyone with the Moon or ascendant in Capricorn or Cancer. These are the two placements above where a node sits in the 1st house rather than a supporting house, and a 1st-house transit tends to be the most personally felt of the twelve.

What does not help, and what does

What does not help. Fear does not help. A transit description that promises disaster unless you act is reading your anxiety, not your chart; classical texts describe tendencies and work to be done, never verdicts. Nor do remedies sold on urgency: a package of nodal pujas priced and pushed because “Rahu is dangerous right now” is a sales technique, not a classical prescription, and no genuine tradition ties your wellbeing to how much you spend in the transit’s first week.

What does help, in this order.

Behaviour first, because it is free and because every classical text expects exactly this of a demanding placement: read your Moon sign and ascendant sections above, note the practical step, and do it. This is not a metaphor for remedy. It is the remedy.
