Mercury turns retrograde three times in 2027. The first runs from 9 February 2027 to 3 March 2027, starting in Kumbha (Aquarius) and ending in Makara (Capricorn). The second runs from 10 June 2027 to 5 July 2027 entirely within Mithuna (Gemini). The third runs from 7 October 2027 to 28 October 2027, starting in Tula (Libra) and ending in Kanya (Virgo). All dates are in Indian Standard Time and all signs are sidereal, the zodiac used in Vedic astrology, which sits about twenty-four degrees behind the tropical zodiac Western columns use. That is why the signs here differ from those you may see elsewhere, such as Pisces and Aquarius for the first one.
Mercury does not turn round in space. As it overtakes Earth on its faster, inner orbit, it appears for about three weeks to drift backwards against the stars. In Sanskrit it is called vakri (crooked or bent) Budha. This page lists the exact turning points, the shadow periods, the signs involved, and how the Jyotish tradition reads the phase.
Summary table
| Period | Pre-shadow begins | Station retrograde | Station direct | Post-shadow ends |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First | 26 January 2027 | 9 February 2027 | 3 March 2027 | 23 March 2027 |
| Second | 26 May 2027 | 10 June 2027 | 5 July 2027 | 19 July 2027 |
| Third | 17 September 2027 | 7 October 2027 | 28 October 2027 | 13 November 2027 |
The pre-shadow begins when Mercury first reaches the degree where it will later turn direct, and the post-shadow ends when it is back at the degree where it turned retrograde. These are conventions of modern popular astrology for the stretch of sky Mercury retraces, and they are not classical categories, but they are useful for planning.
First retrograde: Kumbha back into Makara
Mercury turns retrograde on 9 February 2027 at 23:06 IST, at 11 degrees 45 minutes Kumbha, and turns direct on 3 March 2027 at 18:02 IST, at 26 degrees 41 minutes Makara. Between the two stations it travels back about 15 degrees over 22 days. It slips back into Makara on 24 February 2027, and moves forward into Kumbha again on 12 March 2027. The pre-shadow begins on 26 January 2027 and the post-shadow ends on 23 March 2027, so the whole cycle spans 57 days.
Mercury is combust, too close to the Sun to be seen well (called asta in Sanskrit), from 12 February 2027 to 24 February 2027, which includes the retrograde midpoint. Mercury is always close to the Sun at the middle of a retrograde, which is a fact of the geometry.
Kumbha and Makara are both ruled by Saturn, and Mercury there is often described as thoughtful, systematic and conventional. Revisiting plans, paperwork and long-standing arrangements is the theme most often given.
Second retrograde: Mithuna
The second retrograde stays within Mithuna, which Mercury itself rules. Mercury turns retrograde on 10 June 2027 at 23:44 IST, at 12 degrees 7 minutes Mithuna, and turns direct on 5 July 2027 at 01:10 IST, at 3 degrees 13 minutes Mithuna, covering about 9 degrees in 24 days. The pre-shadow begins on 26 May 2027 and the post-shadow ends on 19 July 2027.
Mercury is combust from 15 June 2027 to 2 July 2027. In its own sign, retrograde Mercury is read as a good time for revisiting study, rewriting drafts, catching up on correspondence and mending lines of communication, rather than for new launches.
Third retrograde: Tula back into Kanya
Mercury turns retrograde on 7 October 2027 at 20:06 IST, at 10 degrees 41 minutes Tula, and turns direct on 28 October 2027 at 19:40 IST, at 25 degrees 4 minutes Kanya. It travels back about 16 degrees in 21 days. It re-enters Kanya on 21 October 2027 and moves forward into Tula again on 5 November 2027. The pre-shadow begins on 17 September 2027 and the post-shadow ends on 13 November 2027.
Mercury is combust from 14 October 2027 to 25 October 2027. Kanya is both Mercury’s own sign and the sign where it is exalted, so the tradition counts the final part of this retrograde as Mercury at home and strong. Tula, ruled by Venus, brings the themes of agreements and fair terms, which are the ones most often named for this phase.
Your Moon sign and the three retrogrades
The house Mercury occupies from your Moon sign shows which area of life the retrograde touches. Where two houses are given, Mercury starts in one and ends in the other.

|---|---|---|---|
| Mesha (Aries) | 11th to 10th | 3rd | 7th to 6th |
| Vrishabha (Taurus) | 10th to 9th | 2nd | 6th to 5th |
| Mithuna (Gemini) | 9th to 8th | 1st | 5th to 4th |
| Karka (Cancer) | 8th to 7th | 12th | 4th to 3rd |
| Simha (Leo) | 7th to 6th | 11th | 3rd to 2nd |
| Kanya (Virgo) | 6th to 5th | 10th | 2nd to 1st |
| Tula (Libra) | 5th to 4th | 9th | 1st to 12th |
| Vrishchika (Scorpio) | 4th to 3rd | 8th | 12th to 11th |

| Makara (Capricorn) | 2nd to 1st | 6th | 10th to 9th |
| Kumbha (Aquarius) | 1st to 12th | 5th | 9th to 8th |
| Meena (Pisces) | 12th to 11th | 4th | 8th to 7th |
Mercury governs speech, trade, writing, learning and short travel, so the houses above show where those themes ask for a second look. Mercury moves fast, which means a transit through a single house lasts only weeks, and the classical texts give it much less weight than they give to Saturn or Jupiter. Use this as a prompt for attention rather than a forecast.
How the tradition reads a retrograde Mercury
In Jyotish the idea of vakri graha is older than the popular Western habit of warning about Mercury retrograde. The shadbala (six-fold strength) scheme in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra credits a retrograde planet with high motional strength, cheshta bala, and some practitioners accordingly say a vakri planet acts with extra force, just not smoothly. A retrograde Mercury is usually described as turning its energy towards review, repetition and reconsideration. In our reading of how practitioners use it, Indian astrologers treat a Mercury retrograde as a minor background factor, and weigh the sign, the house, the dasha and the planet’s place in your birth chart much more heavily.
There is no scientific evidence that Mercury retrograde affects events. The dates above are astronomy, and the interpretations are a tradition for reflection. If it helps you to slow down, that is a fine reason to use it. Ordinary good sense does the same job: back up files, read agreements twice, allow extra time for travel, and ask for confirmation in writing. For health, money or legal questions, speak to a professional, not a chart.
If a Mercury dasha or antardasha is running for you, the dasha timeline is the more useful guide, and our guide to dashas explains how to read it. Our Mercury remedies guide sets out the tradition’s gentle practices for Budha, such as reading, speaking kindly and keeping Wednesday as a quiet day of study.
Check it against your own chart
The retrograde planets calculator shows which planets are retrograde today and which were in your birth chart, and the personal transit report shows where the slow planets sit from your Moon. Jupiter and Saturn have their own 2027 guides, Jupiter transit 2027 and Saturn transit 2027, and the live transits page shows each planet’s current state.
Frequently asked questions
↳ When is Mercury retrograde in 2027?
From 9 February 2027 to 3 March 2027, from 10 June 2027 to 5 July 2027, and from 7 October 2027 to 28 October 2027. These are the dates of the stations in Indian Standard Time. A station date can be a day earlier or later in other time zones.
↳ Why do the signs here differ from Western sites?
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is about twenty-four degrees behind the tropical zodiac. The same Mercury station can fall in Pisces on a Western page and in Kumbha on this one. Neither is wrong, because they measure from different starting points.
↳ What is the shadow period?
It is the stretch of sky Mercury crosses three times: forwards before the retrograde, backwards during it and forwards again after it. The pre-shadow begins on 26 January 2027, 26 May 2027 and 17 September 2027, and the post-shadow ends on 23 March 2027, 19 July 2027 and 13 November 2027. It is a modern convention, not a classical rule.
↳ Is Mercury retrograde bad in Vedic astrology?
Not in a simple way. The tradition treats a retrograde planet as strong but unconventional, and it counts Mercury's sign, house and dasha as more important. Many practitioners use the phase as a prompt to review and revise, not as a warning.
↳ Should I avoid signing contracts or travelling?
There is no evidence that you need to. A careful approach is sensible in any month: read terms twice, keep copies and allow some buffer time. If a date matters to you for traditional reasons, ask your own astrologer or family priest, since practice varies.
Method
Station dates, sign changes and combustion windows are computed from the Swiss Ephemeris with the Lahiri ayanamsa, using the same engine as the site’s transit tools. Shadow dates are found by tracing Mercury’s longitude to the degrees of the two stations.
