Choose your birth nakshatra and pada above to see whether the Moon today is favourable for you, and when that changes over the next seven days. These are the two personal checks a muhurta uses before a new start: Chandrabala, the Moon’s strength for your Moon sign, and Tarabala, the strength of today’s nakshatra for your birth nakshatra.

Chandrabala

Chandrabala counts from your Moon sign to the sign the Moon is passing through now. When the Moon is in the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th or 11th sign from yours, it is favourable. The 4th, 8th and 12th are avoided, and the 8th, called Chandrashtama, is the one the texts avoid most. The 2nd, 5th and 9th are counted favourable by many authorities only in the bright half of the month, so the calculator marks them as mixed.

Tarabala

Tarabala counts from your birth nakshatra to today’s nakshatra, in groups of nine. The nine taras are Janma, Sampat, Vipat, Kshema, Pratyak, Sadhana, Naidhana, Mitra and Parama Mitra. Sampat, Kshema, Sadhana, Mitra and Parama Mitra are favourable; Vipat, Pratyak and Naidhana are avoided for a new start; Janma, the birth star itself, is mixed and usually not chosen for anything major.

How to use it

The Moon changes sign about every two and a half days and nakshatra about once a day, so the result can change in the middle of a day. The table gives the exact times, in your device’s own time zone, and highlights the stretches that are favourable on both counts.

These checks are for choosing a good time to begin something: a journey, a purchase, a new job, a ceremony. They are not a forecast, and a day marked as avoided is not a bad day to live through. For a whole muhurta, including the tithi, the weekday and the rising sign, speak to an astrologer.
