What Mangal dosha matching is

Mangal dosha, also called Kuja dosha or being Manglik, is the name given to Mars standing in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of a birth chart. In north Indian practice the houses are counted from the Lagna, from the Moon and from Venus. Because the 7th house concerns partnership, and the 2nd, 4th, 8th and 12th touch family life and home, the tradition asks that the two charts of a couple be compared on this one point before a marriage is fixed.

Matching here means placing the two results side by side. The tradition has a simple core: if both partners have the dosha, it balances out. If only one has it, the next step is to look for the classical cancellations in that chart, and to weigh the matter with everything else in the two charts. Many families treat it as one point among several, along with the ashtakoota score, which you can explore with the Gun Milan by name calculator and the nakshatra compatibility calculator.

How the calculator works

You enter the date, time and place of birth for each person, and a name if you wish. For each chart the tool works out the planets and the ascendant, using the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the mean node and the local sidereal time at the birth place, with the time zone in force at that place on that date.

It then runs each chart through the same Mangal dosha engine as the single-chart Mangal dosha calculator. That engine counts the house of Mars from the Lagna, the Moon and Venus. All three references give a strong result, two a moderate one and one a mild one. It then tests the cancellations it can check in one chart: Mars in its own sign or exalted, Mars in Leo or Aquarius which several authorities accept, Jupiter conjunct or aspecting Mars, and Jupiter or Venus in the Lagna. The page shows both results in full, with Mars in each chart counted from the three reference points, and also the Lagna-only result for readers who follow the method many matching tables use.

Reading the two results

If neither chart has the dosha, there is nothing to balance on this point. If both do, the traditional rule is that the Mars influence in one is matched by the Mars influence in the other, and the dosha is not held against the match. Some teachers prefer the two to be of similar strength, and the page points out when the strengths differ.

If only one chart has it, look at the cancellations listed for that chart. When one or more applies, many teachers take the dosha as reduced or cancelled. The age convention is shown as well: a widely followed rule says the dosha softens after twenty-eight, and the page states each person’s age today. Beyond that, the question is a matter for a trained astrologer your family trusts, who can weigh the dosha against the whole of both charts.

Where traditions differ

This is a topic on which teachers differ a great deal. Some count Mars from the Lagna only, which makes fewer people Manglik, and some also count the Moon and Venus, as we do. Some add the 2nd house and some leave it out. Some treat the 7th and 8th as the strongest placements. Some count Saturn, Rahu or the Sun in those houses as a balancing influence in the other chart, which this tool does not test. A few modern astrologers hold that Mangal dosha has been overstated in popular practice, and give it little weight. Because the verdict depends on the school, we show the working so that you can follow your own family’s custom.

What it does not do

It does not tell you whether a marriage will be happy, and it does not call anyone unlucky. Mars in a house is a chart placement and the people are far more than that. Birth times are also uncertain in many families, and a few minutes can change the Lagna and so the result. If the matter is weighing on you, speak with elders and with an astrologer, and for any worry about the relationship itself, with the people involved or a counsellor. Both charts can also be seen in full in the free kundali, and the kundali matching guide explains the rest of the process.

Frequently asked questions

↳ What happens if both partners are Manglik?

In the traditional rule the two doshas balance each other, and the dosha is not held against the match. Some teachers also like the two to be of similar strength.

↳ What if only one person has Mangal dosha?

The usual next step is to look for the classical cancellations in that chart, then the age convention, and then to weigh the point with the rest of both charts. Many astrologers treat it as one factor, not a decision on its own.

↳ Why does one site say I am Manglik and another says I am not?

Because the methods differ. Counting Mars from the Lagna alone gives a different answer from counting from the Lagna, Moon and Venus, and sites also differ on the houses and on which cancellations to apply. This tool shows both views.

↳ Does the dosha really go away after the age of 28?

It is a widely followed convention, not a rule every teacher accepts. The tool reports it as a convention and states each person's age today.

↳ How accurate does the birth time need to be?

As accurate as you can get it. The Lagna sign changes about every two hours and Mars is counted from it, so an error of half an hour matters most when the birth falls close to a change of the rising sign.
