What Saturn’s transit is
Saturn, called Shani, is the slowest of the visible planets and the one tradition associates with time, discipline, duty and the results of sustained effort. It circles the zodiac in about twenty-nine and a half years and so stays two and a half years or so in each sign. Most people live through two or three full Saturn cycles, which is why Saturn’s changes of sign are felt as chapters of a life more than as events.
As with other transits, the reading depends on where Saturn stands counted from your Moon sign, called the rashi. The Moon sign is the 1st house, the next sign the 2nd, and so on. Saturn visits all twelve houses in turn, and the houses around the Moon have the best-known names: the 12th, 1st and 2nd together make Sade Sati, and the 4th and 8th are the two Dhaiya phases.
How the calculator works
Choose your Moon sign, or enter your birth details and let the tool find it. If the Moon changed sign on your birth date and you do not know the time, both signs are shown. Then pick the date to look from, which starts as today.
The tool reads Saturn from the Swiss Ephemeris tables on this site, in the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, and counts the house from your Moon. It then lists every sign Saturn enters over the following thirty years, with the date it enters and leaves, the house from your Moon, the gochara reading, and the named phase if there is one. Saturn is retrograde for about four and a half months each year, and near a sign boundary it can step back into the earlier sign and return, so those returning passes are marked, and a list of the retrograde and direct dates is shown around your date.
Reading the result
In the gochara tables of Phaladeepika, which the Gochar view of the transits page also follows, Saturn is counted favourable in the 3rd, 6th and 11th houses from the Moon and less easy elsewhere. The named phases are later traditions rather than terms of that text. Sade Sati, the seven and a half years of Saturn in the 12th, 1st and 2nd from the Moon, is read as a long period of testing and consolidation. The Dhaiya phases, Saturn in the 4th or 8th, each last about two and a half years and are linked with home and comfort in the first case, and with change and the unseen in the second.
The calmer reading, and the one we give, is that Saturn rewards patience and steady work. Many people recall these years as the time they grew most. A Saturn in a friendly sign or strong in the birth chart is read much more gently, and the dasha running at the time counts too. For the full dates of every Sade Sati in a life, use the Sade Sati calculator, and for the 4th and 8th phases the Shani Dhaiya calculator. If you wish to observe Saturdays in the traditional way, the Shani puja on Saturdays page describes the usual practices.
Where traditions differ
Writers disagree about which phases to count. Some use the name Kantaka Shani for Saturn in the 4th, 7th and 10th from the Moon; we show the 4th and the 8th as Dhaiya, the most common usage. Some count Sade Sati from the Moon’s degrees and not from the sign, so that it begins a little earlier or later. Some give less weight to all of this and more to the dasha and to Saturn’s strength in the birth chart. A different ayanamsa moves an ingress by a few days, and our dates use Lahiri and can differ from an almanac by a day.
What it does not do
It does not say what will happen. If a hard time leads you to worry, speak to someone you trust, and to a doctor or counsellor about health or mood. A transit is one layer of a reading, and the birth chart and dasha matter more. You can see yours in the free kundali.
Frequently asked questions
↳ How long does Saturn stay in each sign?
About two and a half years, and it takes about twenty-nine and a half years to go round the zodiac. Retrograde motion can bring it back into the earlier sign for a few months.
↳ Is Sade Sati the same as Saturn in the 12th, 1st and 2nd?
Yes. Sade Sati means seven and a half years, the time Saturn takes to cross the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign and the sign after it. The tool marks the phase when Saturn is in one of those houses.
↳ What is the difference between Dhaiya and Sade Sati?
Dhaiya means two and a half years and applies when Saturn is in the 4th or the 8th sign from your Moon. Sade Sati covers three consecutive signs and about seven and a half years.
↳ Which houses from the Moon are favourable for Saturn?
The 3rd, 6th and 11th, in the gochara tables of Phaladeepika. The other houses are labelled less easy, which suggests patience and steady effort and does not predict trouble.
↳ Does Saturn have to be unkind in these phases?
No. The tradition describes themes of discipline, responsibility and slow progress. A well-placed Saturn in the birth chart, a supportive dasha and steady habits soften the picture a great deal.
