What Shani Dhaiya is

Dhaiya comes from a word meaning two and a half. In Vedic astrology it names the stretch of about two and a half years when Saturn, the slow planet, moves through the 4th or the 8th sign counted from your Moon sign. Saturn takes about twenty-nine and a half years to circle the zodiac, which is roughly two and a half years in each sign, and that is where the name comes from. Over a long life, most people meet each kind of Dhaiya two or three times. The 4th-sign phase is often called Kantaka Shani and also Small Panoti, and the 8th-sign phase is called Ashtama Shani. Writers differ on the names: some use Kantaka Shani for Saturn in the 7th and 10th as well, and this tool keeps to the 4th and the 8th, which is what most people mean by Dhaiya.

How the calculator works

The tool finds your Moon sign, the rashi, from your birth details. It converts your local birth time to universal time, reads the Moon from the Swiss Ephemeris tables on this site and subtracts the Lahiri ayanamsa to get the sidereal sign. If you already know your Moon sign, you can choose it and skip the birth details. If you give no birth time and the Moon changed sign on your birth date, the tool shows both possibilities.

It then finds where Saturn is on the date you ask for and counts the signs from your Moon. The 4th and 8th are the Dhaiya signs. For the next thirty years the tool follows the sign changes of Saturn, including the times when Saturn turns retrograde and steps back into the earlier sign for a few months, and groups them into one phase with its passes, so that you see when a phase begins and when it finally ends.

Reading the result

If Saturn is in your 4th or 8th sign, the tool says which, and lists the dates. If it is not, the tool tells you which sign from your Moon Saturn is in, and when the next phase starts. If Saturn is in the 12th, 1st or 2nd sign from your Moon, the transit is Sade Sati, and the Sade Sati calculator covers it.

The traditional reading is about themes, and it is not a verdict. Saturn in the 4th is linked with the home, comfort, family responsibilities and the sense of settledness, and tradition asks for patience in those areas. Saturn in the 8th is linked with change, the unseen and slower going. Many people find these years steady and formative, as Saturn rewards discipline, and a Saturn in a friendly or strong position in the birth chart is read much more gently. The transit is only one factor, and a full reading looks at your Mahadasha, the houses and the strength of Saturn in your chart. For that, see the free kundali and the Mahadasha calculator.

Where traditions differ

Some use a different ayanamsa, and in that case an ingress can fall a few days away. Whether the 4th and 8th are felt strongly is itself debated, and many modern astrologers give more weight to Sade Sati. We show the sign-based count that most almanacs use. Saturn’s ingress dates can differ by a day between sources, so the dates are for planning and not to the hour.

If you wish to observe the day in the traditional way, the Shani puja on Saturdays page describes the usual practices, and the page on Sade Sati in 2026 and 2027 shows which signs are in that transit now.

What it does not do

It does not predict events, and it does not replace advice from a trained astrologer. If a hard time in your life leads you to worry, speak to someone you trust, and to a doctor or counsellor for health or mood.

Frequently asked questions

↳ What is the difference between Dhaiya and Sade Sati?

Sade Sati is Saturn in the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from your Moon, about seven and a half years in all. Dhaiya is Saturn in the 4th or 8th sign, about two and a half years each.

↳ Which Moon signs have Dhaiya from Saturn in Pisces?

Saturn in Meena is in the 4th sign from Dhanu (Sagittarius) and in the 8th sign from Simha (Leo). The tool shows the exact dates for your own Moon sign.

↳ Is Shani Dhaiya always difficult?

No. It is a period for patience and steady work in the areas Saturn rules, and much depends on the chart. Many people go through it without a difficult time.

↳ Why is my Dhaiya split into several dates?

Saturn turns retrograde each year. Near a sign boundary it can step back into the earlier sign for a few months, so a phase can have more than one pass.

↳ Do I need my birth time?

Only if the Moon changed sign on your birth date. In that case the tool shows both signs, and a birth time settles which one is yours.
