What Jupiter’s transit is
Jupiter, called Guru or Brihaspati, is the planet of growth, learning, teachers and good counsel. It takes a little under twelve years to travel round the zodiac, which means it stays about a year in each sign. Its move from one sign to the next is one of the most followed events in the Indian calendar, and almanacs and temples publish the date well ahead.
What it means for you depends on where Jupiter stands counted from your own Moon sign. The sign the Moon was in at your birth is the 1st house, the next is the 2nd, and so on round to the 12th. Over twelve years Jupiter visits every one of those houses once, so everyone meets each position about every twelve years.
How the calculator works
Choose your Moon sign if you know it. Otherwise enter your birth date, time and place, and the tool works out the Moon’s sign. If you do not know the time and the Moon changed sign on your birth date, both signs are shown. Then choose the date to look from, which starts as today.
The tool reads Jupiter’s position from the Swiss Ephemeris tables on this site, in the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, and finds its house counted from your Moon. It then lists, from that date, every sign Jupiter occupies over the next twelve years with the dates it enters and leaves, the house from your Moon, and the gochara reading. Jupiter turns retrograde for about four months each year and may slip back into the earlier sign for a while, so the list marks those retrograde passes, and a separate list gives the retrograde and direct dates around your date.
Reading the result
The gochara tables of Phaladeepika, the same used by the Gochar view of the transits page, count Jupiter favourable when it is in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th or 11th house from the Moon. The tradition links these houses with money and family, children and learning, partnership, fortune and gains. In the other houses Jupiter’s reading is less easy, which asks for patience and steady effort in the matters of that house, and it does not mean that Jupiter withholds its help.
The tool also says whether the classical obstruction, vedha, applies. In the tables a favourable Jupiter is held back if another graha stands in a particular paired house: the 12th for Jupiter in the 2nd, the 4th for the 5th, the 3rd for the 7th, the 10th for the 9th and the 8th for the 11th. The result states plainly whether that is so on your date.
Jupiter is also read with the house it occupies in your birth chart. For that, see the guide to Jupiter in all twelve houses, and the running dasha in the Mahadasha calculator. The personal transit report puts Jupiter beside Saturn, Rahu and Ketu.
Where traditions differ
Teachers read Jupiter’s transit in more than one way. Many weigh the Moon-sign tables above, while others count from the Lagna, and some use the Ashtakavarga points of the sign Jupiter is crossing. The date of an ingress also depends on the ayanamsa: a different one shifts it by a few days. Our dates use Lahiri and can differ from a printed almanac by a day. Some Indian almanacs follow the entry of Jupiter into a sign for festivals such as the Pushkaram, which is a separate tradition from this one.
What it does not do
It does not promise good fortune in a favourable house or hardship in a less easy one. A transit is one layer of a reading. The birth chart and the dasha shape how it is felt, and you can see the whole chart in the free kundali. If you want a reading, book a consultation.
Frequently asked questions
↳ How long does Jupiter stay in a sign?
About a year. It circles the zodiac in a little under twelve years. Because Jupiter turns retrograde, it can step back into the earlier sign for some months before moving on.
↳ Which houses from the Moon are favourable for Jupiter?
The 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th, in the gochara tables of Phaladeepika. In the other houses the reading is less easy, which is a prompt to be patient and not a prediction of trouble.
↳ What is Guru Peyarchi?
It is the Tamil name for Jupiter's change of sign, observed with temple festivals in South India. The tool shows the date of each change of sign in the sidereal zodiac, and the exact day observed locally can differ by a day.
↳ Does the tool use my Moon sign or my Sun sign?
Your Moon sign, the rashi. It is not the Western sun sign. If you do not know it, the tool finds it from your birth details, or you can use the Moon sign calculator first.
↳ Is a favourable Jupiter a guarantee?
No. It is a traditional label for a supportive phase. How it plays out depends on your birth chart, your dasha and your own choices.
