The Sun (Surya) is the one graha that makes its own light, and the house it occupies is the part of your life where you most want to be seen, to lead and to matter. That is its strength and its risk: an ego-invested house can be a source of purpose or of friction. This page is the guide to the Sun as a planet, and the twelve pages linked below read the Sun in each house in detail.
Surya as the natural significator of the self
In the Jaimini system any planet can be the Atmakaraka, the soul significator, but the Sun is the natural one in every chart. It stands for the self, the father, authority, government and, in traditional astrology, the heart and the eyes. Those body links are traditional associations, not predictions, and anyone with a health concern should speak to a doctor.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Own sign | Leo (Simha) |
| Moolatrikona | Leo, 0 to 20 degrees |
| Exaltation | Aries (Mesha), 10 degrees |
| Debilitation | Libra (Tula), 10 degrees |
| Friends | Moon, Mars, Jupiter |
| Enemies | Venus, Saturn (many modern lists add Rahu) |
| Neutral | Mercury |
| Nature | Pitta, fire, heat, sattvic |
| Mahadasha | 6 years, the shortest in Vimshottari |
| Age of maturity | 21 or 22, by one common list |
| Dig Bala | Strongest in the 10th house, weakest in the 4th |
| Day | Sunday (Ravivar) |
| Time in one sign | About 30 days |
Libra debilitates the Sun because it is the sign of Venus, the sign of compromise and partnership, where “what do I want?” becomes “what do we want?”. Aries exalts it because Mars’s sign rewards initiative.
Surya in the Puranas: Sanjna, Chhaya and the sons
The central story is that of Surya’s marriage to Sanjna, daughter of Vishwakarma. His radiance was too much for her. She left a shadow-self, Chhaya, in her place and went into the forest as a mare. Surya found her as a stallion, and from that meeting came the Ashwini Kumaras, the divine physicians linked with the first nakshatra, Ashwini. Vishwakarma then trimmed away part of the Sun’s brightness on a lathe, and the tradition says divine weapons were fashioned from it.
Astrologers read three ideas into this. First, the Sun’s strength has to be filtered: the ascendant plays the part of the charioteer Aruna, who shields the world from raw light. Second, the Sun’s children map onto astrology. Yama, the lord of dharma and death, and Shani, the son of Chhaya, who is the root of the Sun-Saturn enmity, are the best known. Third, Karna, the son of Surya and Kunti, raised unrecognised, is the traditional image of the Sun in a difficult house: real worth that the world is slow to see.
Surya’s chariot has seven horses, read as the seven days, the seven colours of light and the seven notes of music. The great Sun temples are Konark in Odisha, built as a stone chariot; Modhera in Gujarat, dated to the Solanki period (1026 CE); and Suryanar Kovil in Tamil Nadu, one of the Navagraha temples.
What the Sun is asked to carry in each of the twelve houses
Every house below has its own page with the full reading. Health notes in the table are traditional pointers, not predictions or diagnoses.
| House | Theme | Strength and strain in brief | Full article |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Self, body, presence | Natural authority and a visible personality; risk of dominating others | Sun in the 1st house |
| 2nd | Wealth, speech, family | Commanding speech and family pride; speech can be harsh | Sun in the 2nd house |
| 3rd | Courage, siblings, expression | Initiative and bold communication; can domineer toward siblings | Sun in the 3rd house |
| 4th | Home, mother, inner life | Pride in roots and property; the Sun is at its weakest in directional strength here, and home life can become a contest | Sun in the 4th house |
| 5th | Creativity, children, intelligence | Creative confidence and recognition; ego can enter romance and parenting | Sun in the 5th house |
| 6th | Obstacles, service, rivals | Traditionally read as a good place for resilience against rivals; acidity and heart themes are traditional pointers | Sun in the 6th house |
| 7th | Partnership, public dealing | Draws capable partners; ego clashes are the risk | Sun in the 7th house |
| 8th | The hidden, inheritance, research | Depth and investigative insight; the father and the eyes are traditional pointers | Sun in the 8th house |
| 9th | Dharma, father, teachers | Father’s blessings and a philosophical bent; beliefs can turn rigid | Sun in the 9th house |
| 10th | Career, public standing | Directional strength: the Sun is most at home here, with the greatest authority and a risk of overwork | Sun in the 10th house |
| 11th | Gains, networks, aims | Income through influence and a wide circle; ego can strain friendships | Sun in the 11th house |
| 12th | Retreat, foreign lands, moksha | A turn toward the spiritual and distant places; lower vitality is a traditional pointer | Sun in the 12th house |
The Sun’s single aspect: a straight look at the opposite house
Unlike Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, the Sun has no special aspects. It looks only at the 7th house from itself. Read that as scrutiny: the opposite house is asked to account for itself in full light. Sun in the 1st looks at the 7th, so partnerships have to serve the identity. Sun in the 10th looks at the 4th, so a public career asks the home to keep up.
Sun as house lord, and which house it serves
The house the Sun occupies is where it shines. The house it rules, which depends on your ascendant, is what it serves. As lord of Leo, the Sun carries the themes of the house that Leo falls on in your chart. This is the row for each ascendant, checked against the standard lordship table.
| Ascendant | Aries | Taurus | Gemini | Cancer | Leo | Virgo | Libra | Scorpio | Sagittarius | Capricorn | Aquarius | Pisces |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| House the Sun rules | 5th | 4th | 3rd | 2nd | 1st | 12th | 11th | 10th | 9th | 8th | 7th | 6th |
So a Sun in the 10th is a different statement for a Scorpio ascendant, where it is also the 10th lord, than for a Capricorn ascendant, where it is the 8th lord.
Combustion: planets that stand too close to the Sun
A planet very near the Sun is called combust, and its own significations are read as overshadowed. The limits in degrees from the Sun are: Moon 12, Mars 17, Mercury 14 (12 when retrograde), Jupiter 11, Venus 10 (8 when retrograde) and Saturn 15. A combust planet does not stop working. Tradition says it works differently, often more inwardly, and with its worldly results muted. How much that matters depends on the planet and the house.
How sign and friendship change the Sun
| Sign group | Relation | Signs |
|---|---|---|
| Exaltation | Strongest | Aries |
| Own sign | Very strong | Leo |
| Friendly signs | Comfortable | Cancer (Moon), Aries and Scorpio (Mars), Sagittarius and Pisces (Jupiter) |
| Neutral signs | Even | Gemini and Virgo (Mercury) |
| Enemy signs | Strained | Taurus and Libra (Venus), Capricorn and Aquarius (Saturn) |
| Debilitation | Weakest | Libra |
Swati, the Rahu-ruled nakshatra in Libra, holds the Sun’s debilitation point at 10 degrees. Uttarayana, the Sun’s northward half of the year, runs from about mid-January to mid-July.
Six years of the Sun: the mahadasha and its nine sub-periods
The Sun Mahadasha is only 6 years but is read as concentrated: questions of identity, authority, the father and purpose come up. Each sub-period is 6 years multiplied by the sub-period planet’s years and divided by 120. The fuller guide is the Sun Mahadasha page.
| Sub-period | Duration | Traditional emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Sun-Sun | 3 months, 18 days | Pure solar activation; sets the tone |
| Sun-Moon | 6 months | Ego meets emotion; mother and father themes |
| Sun-Mars | 4 months, 6 days | Energy and initiative; friction with authority, and tradition cautions about hasty action |
| Sun-Rahu | 10 months, 24 days | Confusion over identity, unconventional moves, foreign links |
| Sun-Jupiter | 9 months, 18 days | Often read as the best of the nine: dharma, teachers and counsel align |
| Sun-Saturn | 11 months, 12 days | The father-son enmity themes: delay, obstacles, humility |
| Sun-Mercury | 10 months, 6 days | Sharper thinking, communication, business |
| Sun-Ketu | 4 months, 6 days | Detachment and past-life themes |
| Sun-Venus | 12 months | The longest: desire meets duty, and relationships test identity |
A Sun that is well placed (own sign, exalted, in a kendra or trikona, in a friend’s sign) is read as giving a period of recognition. A Sun that is debilitated, with malefics or in a dusthana is read as giving friction with authority. The outcome rests on the chart, not on the label.
The three nakshatras the Sun rules
| Nakshatra | Span | Deity | Symbol | Tone |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Krittika | 26 degrees 40 minutes Aries to 10 degrees Taurus | Agni | Razor or flame | Sharp and purifying; the Aries part is warrior-like, the Taurus part steadier |
| Uttara Phalguni | 26 degrees 40 minutes Leo to 10 degrees Virgo | Aryaman | Back legs of a bed or cot | Dignified, generous leadership; contracts and marriage are themes |
| Uttara Ashadha | 26 degrees 40 minutes Sagittarius to 10 degrees Capricorn | Vishvadevas | Elephant’s tusk or planks of a bed | Slow to start, hard to defeat; principle in Sagittarius, institutions in Capricorn |
Uttara Phalguni is the second of the Phalguni pair; the first, Purva Phalguni, is ruled by Venus.
Three common misreadings of the Sun
- A debilitated Sun is not a weak person. Libra asks for compromise, and tradition reads a Sun there as learning to use its influence through others. Neecha Bhanga, the cancellation of debilitation, exists as a concept when certain conditions are met, and it needs the whole chart checked, not just the Sun.
- Sun-Saturn is not simply bad. The enmity is real, and the combination can feel like ego against limit. It can also mean authority built slowly and so durably.
- A 12th-house Sun is not only a loss. The 12th is the house of moksha as well as expense, and some astrologers read the Sun there as an inclination toward the inward and the spiritual.
In Vedic astrology the Moon sign and the ascendant carry as much weight as the Sun sign for temperament. The Sun sign speaks to purpose and identity at a deeper level.
Remedies for a weak or afflicted Sun
When the Sun is debilitated, conjunct malefics, afflicted by Rahu or Saturn or poorly placed, the classical tradition offers the following. They are offered as devotion, not as treatment.
Where to start. The behavioural remedies come first because they cost nothing and act on the pattern itself. Mantra and giving come next. Temple visits and rituals are traditional and optional. A gemstone comes last, and only after a full reading of your chart: never as a first response to a single placement, because the wrong stone can strengthen the very thing it was meant to calm.
Physical practice
Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation) is the twelve-posture sequence traditionally practised as a prayer to the Sun. Twelve rounds at sunrise are paired with the twelve names of Surya (Om Mitraya Namah, Om Ravaye Namah, Om Suryaya Namah, Om Bhanave Namah, Om Khagaya Namah, Om Pushne Namah, Om Hiranyagarbhaya Namah, Om Marichaye Namah, Om Adityaya Namah, Om Savitre Namah, Om Arkaya Namah, Om Bhaskaraya Namah). Anyone with a health condition should ask a doctor first.
Lifestyle
- Wake before sunrise and offer water (Arghya) to the rising Sun while chanting the Gayatri Mantra
- Eat meals at regular times, favouring warm, cooked, sattvic food
- Keep an honest relationship with your father, or if estranged, at least release bitterness toward him inwardly
- Avoid lying, deception, or living behind false identities: the Sun’s remedy is always more truth
Mantras
Surya Beej Mantra:
Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah
The classical full count is 7,000 repetitions over 43 days (starting on a Sunday). The simple practice is 108 times daily at sunrise while facing east, on a red sandalwood or sphatik (crystal) mala.
Gayatri Mantra, a prayer to Savitar, the vivifying aspect of the Sun, and a prayer for illuminated intelligence:
Om Bhur Bhuva Swaha, Tat Savitur Varenyam, Bhargo Devasya Dheemahi, Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat.
Traditionally chanted 108 times at sunrise.
Aditya Hridayam Stotra. The hymn from the Ramayana, taught by the sage Agastya to Rama on the battlefield at Lanka, is recited daily or on Sundays and is traditionally turned to during Sun Mahadasha or in times of conflict and lost confidence.
Donations
On Sundays, preferably at sunrise: wheat (whole grain, unprocessed), jaggery (gur), a copper vessel, red cloth, or gold (even a small amount). Traditionally given to temples and to those who serve in religious or educational work.
Temples
- Konark Sun Temple, Odisha, designed as Surya’s chariot
- Suryanar Kovil, Tamil Nadu, the Navagraha temple dedicated to Surya
- Modhera Sun Temple, Gujarat, an ancient temple aligned to catch the equinox sunrise on the sanctum
Gemstone
A last resort, not a first step. Consider a stone only after the whole chart has been read, including this planet’s dignity and the dasha you are running.
Ruby (Manikya): the gemstone of the Sun. A natural, unheated ruby of at least 3 carats, set in gold, worn on the ring finger of the right hand on a Sunday during Shukla Paksha (waxing moon), after proper energisation with the Surya Beej Mantra.
Important: Gemstone remedies amplify the planet’s energy. If the Sun is a functional malefic for your Lagna (e.g., lord of the 6th, 8th, or 12th house), wearing a ruby may intensify problems rather than resolve them. Always consult a qualified astrologer before wearing planetary gemstones.
What the classical texts say about Surya
The great texts of Jyotish have spoken extensively on Surya’s nature and effects. Here are key references every serious student should know:
A note on reading these verses: they are terse and blunt, as texts of their time are, and they were written with a man’s chart in mind. Each speaks of one factor taken alone. No astrologer reads a chart from a single verse, and nothing here is a prediction about you or your family.
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), ch. 3, verse 23 (Santhanam’s edition): The Sun has honey-coloured eyes and a square body, is of clean habits, bilious and intelligent, and has little hair on the head.
Phaladeepika of Mantreshwara (chapter 8, verses 1 and 4, Sastri’s translation): For the Sun in the Lagna the verse gives a blunt list: little hair, an idle and short-tempered nature, pride, poor eyes and a lean body, along with valour. For the Sun in the 10th house it speaks of sons, vehicles, intelligence, wealth, strength and fame, and says the person will be a king.
A classical summary, paraphrased: The Sun stands for the soul, the father, government, authority over others and the eyes. Tradition links a well-placed Sun with honour from those in authority, prosperity and a dharmic life, and an afflicted Sun with eye trouble, heart trouble and quarrels with the father. These are tendencies, and any health concern belongs with a doctor.
Jataka Parijata (Adhyaya XV, sloka 2, Sastri’s translation): The verse says that when Rahu or the Sun occupies the 10th house, the person gains the merit of bathing in the Ganges.
Phaladeepika of Mantreshwara (chapter 8, verse 4): For the Sun in the 9th house the verse is hard on the father, and also says the person has children and relations and reveres the gods and Brahmins.
Practitioners today add that a well-placed Sun in the 9th inclines a person to pilgrimage, religious study and fortune through righteous conduct, and that an afflicted Sun brings conflict with the father. That is present-day practice, not something these verses say.
These are not antiquated observations. They are observations handed down over many centuries by practitioners who gave their lives to understanding the grahas. Treat them as starting points, not endpoints. Your chart is unique. The classics provide the grammar; your life writes the poem.
Where to look for your own Sun
Find the house the Sun occupies, then the sign and its dignity, then the house it rules for your ascendant, then the dasha you are running. Each placement is a different face of Surya, and none is simply better than another.
ॐ काल भैरवाय नमः · ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय नमः
Sun through time
A placement shows most strongly in the planet’s own period. The Sun Mahadasha guide explains the years Sun runs your chart and each of its nine sub-periods. Where Sun sits as the lord of a house is covered in house lords in houses.
