In shortMars in all 27 nakshatras channels the same raw courage and fighting energy of Kartikeya, the fire-born commander, into 27 different battlefields. The sign sets what Mars fights for, but the nakshatra ruler and deity decide how that force gets expressed, from devoted quiet strength in Anuradha to storm-driven intensity in Ardra.

Mars’s nakshatra shows how your drive, courage and temper actually operate: what makes you act, how you fight, and what your anger looks like when it misfires. The sign tells you how comfortable Mars is; the nakshatra’s lord and deity give the style. Mars in Ashwini acts on instinct in seconds, while Mars in Vishakha lays siege to a goal for years.

Mars at a Glance: Dignities, Friends and Aspects

Mars, Mangala or Kuja, is the planet of courage, action, energy, competition and conflict. It signifies younger siblings, land and property, blood, muscle, surgery and engineering. In the Puranic stories Mars is called Bhoomi Putra, son of the Earth, and is closely linked with Kartikeya (Skanda), commander of the gods’ army, who was raised by the six Krittika star mothers.

Mars is a natural malefic, which in Jyotish means a planet of heat, separation and force, not an evil one. A surgeon’s knife and a plough are both Mars. Mars placed in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house is traditionally checked for Mangal dosha in marriage matching, and the nakshatra helps show how that energy behaves at close quarters.

Read the nakshatra in three steps: the sign’s dignity for Mars, the condition of the nakshatra lord in your chart, and the house Mars occupies. The sections below group the nakshatras by the element of the sign they fall in, since Mars, a fiery planet, behaves very differently in fire, earth, air and water.

Mars in the Fire Stars: Ashwini, Bharani, Magha, Purva Phalguni, Moola, Purva Ashadha

Fire suits Mars. In Aries it is in its own sign, and Leo and Sagittarius belong to its friends the Sun and Jupiter. Courage here is open and quick; the risk is impatience and pride.

Mars in Ashwini (0°00’ to 13°20’ Aries; lord Ketu; deity the Ashwini Kumaras). Own sign, and most of the span falls in Mars’s moolatrikona. Instinctive, very fast courage, the first to act in an emergency. Suits emergency medicine, sport and starting ventures. The shadow is starting much and finishing little, and injuries from haste.

Mars in Bharani (13°20’ to 26°40’ Aries; lord Venus; deity Yama). Own sign, in Yama’s nakshatra of birth, death and consequence. Intense, unflinching and comfortable where life and death meet, as in obstetrics, crisis or trauma work. Venus adds passion, and desire and conflict can blur together.

Mars in Magha (0°00’ to 13°20’ Leo; lord Ketu; deity the Pitris). Friend’s sign, in the nakshatra of thrones and ancestors. Commanding presence and courage tied to family name and duty. The weakness is pride that cannot admit a mistake, or authority claimed on lineage rather than merit.

Mars in Purva Phalguni (13°20’ to 26°40’ Leo; lord Venus; deity Bhaga). Friend’s sign, in the nakshatra of pleasure and marital happiness. Warm, dramatic energy that goes into creative work, performance and romance. The risk is bringing competition and jealousy into the places meant for rest.

Mars in Moola (0°00’ to 13°20’ Sagittarius; lord Ketu; deity Nirriti). Friend’s sign, in the nakshatra of roots. This Mars goes to the source of a problem rather than trimming symptoms, which suits research, root cause analysis and investigative work. It can also pull up foundations that only needed watering.

Mars in Purva Ashadha (13°20’ to 26°40’ Sagittarius; lord Venus; deity Apas, the waters). Friend’s sign, in “the earlier invincible”. Fights with conviction and persuasion for a cause, and inspires others. The shadow is declaring victory before the work is finished.

Mars in the Earth Stars: Krittika, Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Chitra, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana

Earth gives Mars something practical to work on. Capricorn is its exaltation sign, Taurus belongs to the neutral Venus, and Virgo to its enemy Mercury. Energy here tends to build, make and hold.

Mars in Krittika (26°40’ Aries to 10°00’ Taurus; lord Sun; deity Agni). The first pada is in Mars’s own Aries; the rest is in Taurus. The Krittikas raised Kartikeya, so this is a meaningful star for Mars. Sharp, purifying, often a leader; suits surgery, cooking, metalwork and command. Honesty can turn into a weapon.

Mars in Rohini (10°00’ to 23°20’ Taurus; lord Moon; deity Prajapati). Neutral sign, in the most fertile nakshatra. Mars builds here: land, property, food, construction, physical stamina. The Moon, a friend, makes the motive security for loved ones. The shadow is possessiveness and territorial jealousy.

Mars in Mrigashira (23°20’ Taurus to 6°40’ Gemini; lord Mars; deity Soma). Mars’s own nakshatra, in Taurus for two padas and Mercury’s Gemini for two. The hunter’s Mars: curious, restless, sharp in debate and research. It may enjoy the chase more than what it catches.

Mars in Uttara Phalguni (26°40’ Leo to 10°00’ Virgo; lord Sun; deity Aryaman). First pada in friendly Leo, the rest in Virgo, an enemy’s sign. A Mars of contracts and keeping one’s word, fighting openly and fairly. It can become rigid about the letter of an agreement and resentful when others do not reciprocate.

Mars in Hasta (10°00’ to 23°20’ Virgo; lord Moon; deity Savitar). Enemy’s sign, in the nakshatra of the hand. Energy goes into skilled, precise work: surgery, crafts, bodywork, mechanics. The open hand can close into a fist, and criticism can turn sharp.

Mars in Chitra (23°20’ Virgo to 6°40’ Libra; lord Mars; deity Tvashtar). Mars’s own nakshatra, two padas in Virgo and two in Libra. The builder and designer, with high standards in architecture, engineering or design. Perfectionism can become frustration with work or collaborators that fall short.

Mars in Uttara Ashadha (26°40’ Sagittarius to 10°00’ Capricorn; lord Sun; deity the Vishvadevas). First pada in friendly Sagittarius, the rest in Capricorn, Mars’s exaltation sign. Patient, principled effort aimed at results that last. The risk is sacrificing people and health to long term duty.

Mars in Shravana (10°00’ to 23°20’ Capricorn; lord Moon; deity Vishnu). Wholly in the exaltation sign. A Mars that listens and gathers information before acting, and then acts precisely. Suits strategy, communications and engineering. Its shadow is holding information as leverage, or never acting at all.

Mars in the Air Stars: Ardra, Punarvasu, Swati, Vishakha, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada

Air spreads Mars’s fire through ideas, systems and people. Gemini is an enemy’s sign, Libra a neutral’s, and Aquarius belongs to the neutral Saturn. This Mars works through strategy, technology and causes more than through the body.

Mars in Ardra (6°40’ to 20°00’ Gemini; lord Rahu; deity Rudra). Enemy’s sign, under the storm god. Anger, when it comes, arrives like weather. Good at taking systems apart, in technology, research or exposing wrongdoing. The danger is destruction without rebuilding.

Mars in Punarvasu (20°00’ Gemini to 3°20’ Cancer; lord Jupiter; deity Aditi). Three padas in Gemini; the fourth in Cancer, Mars’s debilitation sign. Jupiter, a friend, turns Mars toward restoring and protecting. It can also soften Mars into avoiding fights that need to be had.

Mars in Swati (6°40’ to 20°00’ Libra; lord Rahu; deity Vayu). Neutral sign, under the wind god. Mars bends rather than breaks, and finds the path of least resistance in trade, negotiation and independent work. Anger may go underground as avoidance.

Mars in Vishakha (20°00’ Libra to 3°20’ Scorpio; lord Jupiter; deities Indra and Agni). Three padas in Libra, the fourth in Mars’s own Scorpio. Single minded pursuit of a goal over years. The forked symbol hints at the cost: everything else can be sacrificed to winning.

Mars in Dhanishta (23°20’ Capricorn to 6°40’ Aquarius; lord Mars; deity the eight Vasus). Mars’s own nakshatra; its first two padas lie in Capricorn and contain Mars’s exaltation degree, 28°. Strong timing and discipline, suiting sport, music, engineering and building wealth over time. Success can feel hollow if it leaves no room for people.

Mars in Shatabhisha (6°40’ to 20°00’ Aquarius; lord Rahu; deity Varuna). Neutral sign, in “a hundred healers”. Mars fights systemic problems: public health, technology, science. It can lose sight of individual people while working for many.

Mars in Purva Bhadrapada (20°00’ Aquarius to 3°20’ Pisces; lord Jupiter; deity Aja Ekapada). Three padas in Aquarius, one in friendly Pisces. Pressure builds slowly and then erupts. Idealistic and drawn to radical change; certainty can harden into fanaticism.

Mars in the Water Stars: Pushya, Ashlesha, Anuradha, Jyeshtha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati

Water is the hardest element for Mars. Cancer is its debilitation sign; Scorpio is its own, where it turns strategic and private; Pisces belongs to its friend Jupiter. Fire under water tends to show as feeling held in, then released.

Mars in Pushya (3°20’ to 16°40’ Cancer; lord Saturn; deity Brihaspati). Debilitation sign. Saturn counts Mars an enemy, while Mars is neutral to Saturn. The protective Mars that guards family or institution and fights long battles out of duty. The shadow is swallowed anger that breaks out disproportionately.

Mars in Ashlesha (16°40’ to 30°00’ Cancer; lord Mercury; deity the Nagas). Contains Mars’s deepest debilitation, 28° Cancer, and Mercury is Mars’s enemy. Strategic, patient, psychologically sharp, suited to research, strategy and precise surgical work. The risk is anger that stays hidden and comes out as manipulation or resentment. Debilitation can be cancelled elsewhere in the chart.

Mars in Anuradha (3°20’ to 16°40’ Scorpio; lord Saturn; deity Mitra). Own sign, in the nakshatra of friendship. Fiercely loyal energy that keeps going in adversity. Suits demanding team work and long research. Loyalty can tighten into possessiveness and long grudges.

Mars in Jyeshtha (16°40’ to 30°00’ Scorpio; lord Mercury; deity Indra). Own sign, in “the eldest”. A Mars of command and responsibility, combining courage with Mercury’s calculation. Indra’s insecurity is the shadow: a leader who sees every capable colleague as a rival.

Mars in Uttara Bhadrapada (3°20’ to 16°40’ Pisces; lord Saturn; deity Ahir Budhnya). Friend’s sign, in the serpent of the deep. Calm on the surface, persistent underneath, suited to long, quiet service and endurance. Without an outlet, Mars here can sink into low motivation.

Mars in Revati (16°40’ to 30°00’ Pisces; lord Mercury; deity Pushan). Friend’s sign, in the last nakshatra. The protective, guiding Mars that stays with people through difficult passages, in care, rescue or guidance work. The shadow is giving without boundaries.

Putting a Fiery Planet to Good Use

  • Choose the right battlefield. Each nakshatra points Mars toward a kind of work. Energy spent in the wrong place, at a partner rather than a task, sours.
  • Use the body. Mars rules muscle and blood. Regular hard exercise or physical work is the simplest way to keep its heat from turning inward.
  • Treat anger as a signal. It points to a boundary crossed or an action needed. The task is to respond to it, not to live in it.
  • Mind the siblings. Mars is the karaka of younger siblings, and those relationships often mirror its condition.

Traditional remedies for Mars include the beej mantra Om Kraam Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah, the Hanuman Chalisa on Tuesdays, Tuesday fasting, donating red lentils (masoor dal) or jaggery, and lighting a ghee lamp at a Hanuman temple. Red coral is Mars’s stone and is worn only after a proper chart consultation.
