Rahu’s nakshatra tells you the specific thing a person is hungry for. Because Rahu is a shadow point with no body or light of its own, it borrows the character of the planet that rules its nakshatra and the deity who presides over it, then enlarges that character until it becomes a drive. Two people with Rahu in the same sign can want very different things if their Rahu sits in different nakshatras.
This page gives a short reading of Rahu in each of the 27 nakshatras, grouped by the nakshatra lord, with a link to the full article for each one.
Why Rahu Leans So Heavily on Its Nakshatra
Rahu is the Moon’s north node, the point where the Moon’s path crosses the ecliptic going north. In the Puranic story, the asura Svarbhanu drank the nectar of immortality and was cut in two by Vishnu’s discus. The head became Rahu and the body became Ketu. A head with no body can taste but never digest, and that is the classical image of Rahu: appetite that does not end in satisfaction.
Since Rahu has no sign of its own in the usual sense, astrologers read it largely through its dispositors. The sign lord shows the general field. The nakshatra lord is closer and more personal: it shows the style and object of the craving. Rahu itself rules three nakshatras (Ardra, Swati and Shatabhisha), and in those Rahu acts with no other planet to borrow from, which tends to make the placement more unconventional.
Three practical points before the star by star readings:
- Rahu’s Vimshottari mahadasha lasts 18 years, and its sub periods within that dasha run through all nine planets. The nakshatra lord’s own condition in the chart (sign, house, strength, aspects) has a large say in how that period feels.
- Ketu always sits 180 degrees from Rahu, so the nakshatra Ketu occupies is the other half of the story. Rahu shows what is reached for. Ketu shows what is already familiar and easy to let go of.
- The readings below describe tendencies. A well placed nakshatra lord tends to give Rahu’s hunger a useful outlet. An afflicted one tends to show the shadow side more.

Rahu in the Ketu Stars: Ashwini, Magha, Moola
These three sit at the start of the fire signs Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Ketu is Rahu’s own other half, so here the head is working through material the body already knows. The pull is toward beginnings, roots and lineage.
Rahu in Ashwini (Aries). The Ashwini Kumaras are the fast, dawn riding physicians of the gods. Rahu here wants speed and the thrill of starting, and is often drawn to healing, emergency work or anything new. The risk is starting far more than gets finished.
Rahu in Magha (Leo). Magha belongs to the ancestors and its symbol is a throne. Rahu here has a complicated relationship with family name and status: wanting the throne, or wanting to break from what it represents. Authority comes easily, but it has to be earned to last.
Rahu in Moola (Sagittarius). Nirriti is the goddess of dissolution and the symbol is a bundle of roots. Rahu here wants to get to the bottom of things and often lives through upheaval that pulls old foundations out. It suits research and investigation. The shadow is tearing things down out of habit.
Rahu in the Venus Stars: Bharani, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha
Venus gives Rahu something attractive to chase: pleasure, art, romance, persuasion. These placements tend to be magnetic and to want more than is good for them.
Rahu in Bharani (Aries). Yama, lord of death and of dharma, presides here, and the symbol is the womb. Rahu in Bharani goes to extremes and is not afraid of taboo subjects. Its lesson is that intensity carries consequences, which Yama always weighs.
Rahu in Purva Phalguni (Leo). Bhaga governs good fortune and marital happiness. Rahu here wants enjoyment, beauty and creative display, and often works in entertainment, events or design. The trap is pleasure that never quite satisfies.
Rahu in Purva Ashadha (Sagittarius). The name means “the earlier invincible” and the deity is the cosmic waters. Rahu here persuades rather than fights, and suits advocacy, media and teaching. The shadow is mistaking the ability to win an argument for being right.
Rahu in the Sun Stars: Krittika, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha
The Sun is a natural enemy of Rahu, and in its nakshatras Rahu wants visibility, recognition and authority. These placements are judged in public.
Rahu in Krittika (Aries to Taurus). Agni, the sacred fire, presides and the symbol is a razor. Rahu here is drawn to cutting through falsehood and to positions of moral authority. The risk is harshness that it mistakes for honesty.
Rahu in Uttara Phalguni (Leo to Virgo). Aryaman governs contracts, patronage and social bonds. Rahu here wants a recognised place in a network of obligations: a leader of teams, institutions or communities. It can turn relationships into ledgers if it is not careful.
Rahu in Uttara Ashadha (Sagittarius to Capricorn). The Vishvadevas, the universal gods, preside here. Rahu wants lasting, principled achievement rather than a quick win, and often rises slowly. The shadow is rigidity presented as integrity.
Rahu in the Moon Stars: Rohini, Hasta, Shravana
The Moon is the planet Rahu eclipses, and in its nakshatras Rahu’s hunger is emotional and sensory. The mind can become restless or fixated.
Rahu in Rohini (Taurus). Rohini was the Moon’s favourite wife, and the story of his favouritism ends in Daksha’s curse. Rahu here hungers for beauty, comfort and material creation, and is often good at producing them. The danger is attachment that will not let go.
Rahu in Hasta (Virgo). Hasta is the hand, and its deity Savitar is the sun at dawn. Rahu here wants skill and mastery with the hands or with technique. The same dexterity can drift into cleverness used to take advantage.
Rahu in Shravana (Capricorn). Shravana means listening and Vishnu presides. Rahu here absorbs information and organises it, which suits communication, media and advisory roles. The shadow is listening for leverage instead of understanding.
Rahu in the Mars Stars: Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta
Mars gives Rahu drive, competitiveness and an edge. These three straddle sign boundaries, so the sign lord changes partway through each one.
Rahu in Mrigashira (Taurus to Gemini). The symbol is a deer’s head and the deity is Soma. Rahu here is a restless seeker who follows every lead in research, travel or trade. The search can become the point, so nothing is ever enough.
Rahu in Chitra (Virgo to Libra). Tvashtar, the divine craftsman, presides and the symbol is a bright jewel. Rahu here wants to build something impressive and polished, in design, engineering or the visual arts. The shadow is caring more for the surface than the structure.
Rahu in Dhanishta (Capricorn to Aquarius). The eight Vasus preside and the symbol is a drum. Rahu here has a sense of timing and rhythm and often pursues wealth and recognition through music, sport or group work. The drum is hollow, and so can be success without inner meaning.
Rahu in Its Own Stars: Ardra, Swati, Shatabhisha
In the three nakshatras Rahu rules, there is no other planet to colour it. These placements are the most unconventional and the most clearly Rahu in flavour.
Rahu in Ardra (Gemini). Rudra, the storm form, presides and the symbol is a teardrop. Rahu here is sharp, analytical and drawn to taking systems apart, which suits technology and research. Life often includes a disruptive period that forces rebuilding.
Rahu in Swati (Libra). Vayu, the wind, presides and the symbol is a young shoot bending in the breeze. Rahu here is independent, adaptable and often good at trade and negotiation. The weakness is restlessness that avoids putting down roots.
Rahu in Shatabhisha (Aquarius). Varuna, keeper of cosmic order, presides and the name means “a hundred healers”. Rahu here stands somewhat apart from the mainstream and is drawn to healing, science or technology. Detachment can harden into isolation.
Rahu in the Jupiter Stars: Punarvasu, Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada
Jupiter gives Rahu a cause, a philosophy or a goal. The hunger becomes a mission, which can be inspiring or fanatical.
Rahu in Punarvasu (Gemini to Cancer). Aditi, the boundless mother, presides and the name means “return of the light”. Rahu here wants to restore and teach, and often travels before settling. The shadow is easy optimism that skips real grief.
Rahu in Vishakha (Libra to Scorpio). Indra and Agni preside together, and the name means “forked”. Rahu here chooses one goal and pursues it with great focus. The risk is letting the goal consume everything else.
Rahu in Purva Bhadrapada (Aquarius to Pisces). Aja Ekapada, a form linked with Rudra, presides. Rahu here is intense and idealistic, drawn to radical change and to spiritual extremes. The shadow is certainty that justifies harm.
Rahu in the Saturn Stars: Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada
Saturn is generally treated as friendly to Rahu, and its nakshatras slow Rahu down. Results tend to come later and hold longer.
Rahu in Pushya (Cancer). Brihaspati presides and the symbol is a cow’s udder. Rahu here wants to become a respected provider or advisor, often within institutions. Rahu can sustain long projects in this star. The shadow is control presented as care.
Rahu in Anuradha (Scorpio). Mitra, god of friendship, presides and the symbol is a lotus. Rahu here seeks deep loyalty to a person, group or cause, and often does well away from home. Devotion can turn into dependence.
Rahu in Uttara Bhadrapada (Pisces). Ahir Budhnya, the serpent of the deep, presides. Rahu here is drawn inward, to meditation, psychology or service in hospitals and retreats. The risk is withdrawal that calls itself detachment.
Rahu in the Mercury Stars: Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati
Mercury is generally treated as friendly to Rahu, and its nakshatras make Rahu quick, strategic and often discreet. Each closes a water sign.
Rahu in Ashlesha (Cancer). The Nagas preside and the symbol is a coiled serpent. Rahu here reads people very accurately and suits psychology, strategy or research. The obvious shadow is manipulation.
Rahu in Jyeshtha (Scorpio). The name means “the eldest” and Indra presides. Rahu here wants seniority and gets it through intelligence more than force. Indra’s insecurity can show up as suspicion of rivals.
Rahu in Revati (Pisces). Pushan, guide of travellers and protector of the lost, presides. Rahu here is drawn to guiding and caring for people in transition. The shadow is giving so much that no boundary remains.
Living With the Desire Your Rahu Star Names
Once you know Rahu’s nakshatra, you know the specific thing that pulls hardest. A few steady practices help:
- Name it plainly. “I want recognition”, “I want to be indispensable”, “I want the next thing”. A named desire is easier to steer.
- Study the deity. Each nakshatra deity’s story says something about how the hunger can be used well. Reading and reflecting on it is a simple starting point.
- Look at Ketu. Read Ketu’s nakshatra alongside Rahu’s. The two together show what you are leaving behind and what you are moving toward.
- Use the nakshatra’s shakti. Each nakshatra is traditionally given a power: Ashwini the power to reach things quickly, Bharani the power to take away, Ardra the power of effort. Pointing that power at something larger than personal gain tends to settle Rahu.
Traditional remedies for Rahu include donating dark items such as black sesame or dark cloth on Saturdays, chanting the Rahu beej mantra (Om Bhraam Bhreem Bhraum Sah Rahave Namah), fasting on Saturdays, feeding birds, worship of Goddess Durga, and wearing hessonite (gomed) only after a proper chart consultation. These are meant to channel the hunger, not remove it.
