About this piece
A gomukhi is a cloth bag shaped like a cow's mouth that holds a japa mala while you chant. This one is made of red cotton. The seller says one side shows Goddess Lakshmi seated on a lotus with the Mahalakshmi mantra, another shows a golden Shri Yantra with swastika and Shri symbols, and the third shows Kubera with his mantra.
It has a strap to wear round the neck and a small opening for the index finger, which is traditionally kept off the beads. It suits anyone who chants on a mala and wants to carry it.
How it is used
A gomukhi bag keeps the mala clean and out of sight while chanting. The index finger goes through the small opening so it stays off the beads. Worn on a strap round the neck, the bag keeps the mala off the floor when you sit on the ground.
Looking after it
- Spot clean with a damp cloth and let it dry fully.
