In shortShri Suktam is a Sanskrit hymn to Shri, the goddess Lakshmi, in which Agni Jatavedas is asked to bring her. Its first 15 verses are the core hymn, traditionally a supplement (khila) to the Rigveda, and later verses were added in popular recitation.

Shri Suktam is a hymn to Shri, the goddess better known as Lakshmi, the figure the tradition links with grace, abundance and good fortune. The hymn opens by addressing Jatavedas, a name of Agni, the fire that carries offerings to the gods, and asks him to bring Lakshmi to the speaker. Much of the hymn then describes her and calls her by one lovely image after another: golden, moon-bright, seated on a lotus, honoured by elephants.

The fifteen verses at the start are the core hymn, and tradition counts them as a khila, a supplement to the Rigveda rather than a part of its main collection. Verse 16 states the benefit of reciting the hymn. The verses after that, up to 36 on this page, are usually described as later additions that came into use in popular and temple recitation. They include praise verses, a Lakshmi Gayatri and closing prayers.

On this page you will find all 36 verses in Devanagari with a simple transliteration and a plain meaning for each. Lakshmi is honoured in many homes at Diwali and on Dhanteras, and you can read about those days on the Diwali and Dhanteras pages, where the dates are kept up to date.

Text: Sanskrit Wikisource, page “श्रीसूक्तम्”. Transliteration is simplified; meanings are our own. Verse numbers appear as labels above each verse. Verses 1 to 15 are the core hymn, verse 16 states its benefit, and verses 17 to 36 are later additions as commonly printed. Verse 31 repeats its last line in the source, and we show it as it stands.

When and how it is traditionally recited

Shri Suktam is recited in many homes and temples, often on Fridays, which many families associate with Lakshmi, and at Lakshmi puja during Diwali. Some people recite only the fifteen core verses, while others add the later verses and the closing Lakshmi Gayatri. Practice differs by region, family and teacher.

The text itself, in verse 16, describes how it is used: the reciter becomes pure and self-controlled, offers ghee into the fire each day and recites the fifteen verses steadily. Most households do not keep a fire, so a common adaptation is a clean space, a lamp and flowers before an image of Lakshmi, with the hymn recited calmly and without hurry.

In some traditions the recitation is accompanied by an abhisheka, the ceremonial bathing of the image, or by offering lotus flowers. These are customs, not requirements. If you are new to the hymn, listening to a trusted recording or learning a few verses at a time with a teacher is a gentle way to begin.

What the tradition says it is for

Tradition reads Shri Suktam as a prayer to Lakshmi for prosperity in the wide sense of the word: food, home, family, good name and a settled mind. The hymn itself asks for gold, cattle and horses, and also asks for fame, truth of speech and the removal of misfortune and want. Devotees often read the material images as symbols of well-being generally.

The verses do not stop at wealth. They ask that anger, envy and greed be absent from devotees, and the idea of Shri as radiance and grace, not only money, runs through the hymn. The statements of benefit in verses 16, 22 and 35 are the text’s own claims, and they are reported here as tradition, not as promises.

Shri Suktam is a devotional text. It is not a substitute for medical, legal or financial advice, and reciting it is no replacement for careful planning with your own money or care for your own health. If you are exploring the Lakshmi tradition further, the Kanakadhara Stotram is another hymn to her, and Devi Suktam shows the goddess speaking for herself.

Pronunciation notes

Take the hymn slowly. Long vowels last about twice as long as short ones, so Lakshmi has a short i at the end and Shri has a long ii. The aspirates bh, dh and th carry a small breath of air after the consonant, and the ch is as in church.

Conjuncts trip many people in this hymn. In Jatavedas the j is pronounced as in jar, and Hiranya has the rolled r of Indian speech. Words such as Padma and Kamsosmitam are easiest if you say each consonant in turn without rushing. The anusvara (a dot above the line) is a soft nasal hum, and the visarga adds a light echo of the vowel before it. A teacher or a clear recording helps with the Vedic rhythm.

Frequently asked questions

↳ What is Shri Suktam?

Shri Suktam is a Sanskrit hymn to Shri, or Lakshmi, which opens by asking the fire god Jatavedas to bring her. The fifteen core verses are traditionally treated as a supplement to the Rigveda. Verses after the sixteenth are usually described as later additions.

↳ What does Shri Suktam mean?

It asks Lakshmi, described as golden, moon-bright and lotus-seated, to come and stay, and asks for the removal of misfortune. It also asks for good name, truth of speech, food and a stable household. The page above gives a plain meaning for every verse.

↳ How many verses does Shri Suktam have?

The page shows 36 verses. The first fifteen are the core hymn and verse 16 states the benefit of reciting it. Many printed editions stop at 16 and others add some or all of the rest.

↳ Which day is best to recite Shri Suktam?

Many families recite it on Fridays and at Lakshmi puja on Diwali, but there is no single rule. Customs vary with region and family, so follow the practice of your own household or teacher.

↳ Do I need a fire offering to recite it?

Verse 16 describes offering ghee into a fire while reciting. Most people today recite without one, using a lamp and flowers instead, and tradition allows for such adaptations. Sincere, steady recitation matters more than ritual detail.

↳ Is the Shri Suktam a promise of wealth?

No. The text states benefits for the devotee, and tradition honours those statements, but they are devotional claims, not a guarantee of any outcome. It is best taken up as prayer, alongside sensible work and planning.
