The Shiv Chalisa is a devotional poem in Hindi addressed to Shiva, called here Girija-pati (husband of Parvati), Shankar, Shambhu and Neelkanth. Chalisa comes from the word for forty. The text printed here has an opening doha, forty-one two-line verses and two closing dohas; editions count the lines a little differently.
The poem names Ayodhyadas in the opening doha and again near the end, and tradition credits him as the author. The text gives no biography, so this page treats the attribution as traditional. The closing doha dates the poem to the month of Margashirsha in the year “sixty-four” without naming the era, so no calendar date can be worked out from it.

Text: compared word by word across ten independent editions, ties settled by the Gita Press printing (see the sourcing section below). Transliteration is simplified; meanings are our own.
Notable variants: verse 3 छार or क्षार; verse 15 स्तुति or अस्तुति (Gita Press); verse 16 वेद नाम महिमा तव गाई or वेद माहि महिमा तुम गाई; verse 17 प्रकटी उदधि मंथन में or प्रगटि उदधिमंथन ते (Gita Press); verse 24 रहे or रहौं; verse 35 ऋणीयां, ऋनियाँ or रिनियां; verse 40 अन्तवास or अन्त धाम; verse 41 कहे अयोध्या or कहैं अयोध्यादास; first closing doha नित्त, नित्य or नित.
How the text on this page is sourced
Hindi and Sanskrit Wikisource do not carry the Shiv Chalisa, so the Devanagari was aligned word by word, with a script, across eighteen copies. After removing copies of one another, ten independent editions remained: five websites (sanskritdocuments.org, Bhakti Bharat, Shubh Panchang, Bhajan Sangam and iCanSpirit) and five printed books scanned on archive.org. The books are the Shiv Aradhna of Gita Press, Gorakhpur (book code 2127), a Nitya Prarthana by Swami Hari Tirth Ji Maharaj, the Bol Bam Bhajanavali, a Shiv Bhajanavali of the Posta Sangh, Calcutta, and a Shiv booklet of a Sanatan Dharam Shiv Mandir.
Every printed word is found in at least two editions. Where the editions split evenly, this page follows the Gita Press reading: महँ in verse 15, भये in verse 22, अनंत in verse 23, पुकारों in verse 25, मातपिता in verse 27, दुख in verse 41 and नित्त in the first closing doha. None of the scans carries a printing date, so the page does not claim a pre-1960 edition. If your family learned a different printing, an alternate word is normal and does not make either wrong.
When it is traditionally recited
Many devotees read the Shiv Chalisa on Mondays, in Sawan (Shravana), on Maha Shivaratri and on Pradosh, the thirteenth tithi that the poem itself mentions. There is no required time or count, so follow your family or teacher.
What the tradition says it is for
Its last verses say that Shambhu helps the one who recites it with a steady mind, that debt and the wish for a son are answered, and that sins are cleared. These are the text’s own words of faith, reported here as such and not as promises. For debt, health, fertility or any other worry, please also seek proper financial, medical or professional advice.
