In shortHanuman crosses the sea, passes his tests, enters Lanka, meets Vibhishana and finds a grieving Sita in the Ashoka grove as Ravana threatens her.

This part begins the story as Hanuman leaves Jambavan and his companions and leaps over the sea. Three tests meet him on the way: the mountain Mainaka offers rest, Surasa tests his wit by opening her mouth wider and wider, and a shadow-catching demoness in the water is dealt with.

On the far shore he sees Lanka, enters it as a tiny creature, and meets Lankini and then Vibhishana. He finds Sita in the Ashoka grove, watches Ravana threaten her, and hears her answer. The part closes as the demonesses are set to frighten her.

This is part 1 of 6 of the Sundar Kand, the fifth book of the Ramcharitmanas by Tulsidas, and it carries Dohas 1 to 10. The three opening Sanskrit verses are on the overview page.

In this part

  • Hanuman declines the rest offered by Mainaka (Doha 1)
  • Surasa tests him and he passes by becoming tiny (Doha 2)
  • Lankini is struck by his fist and lets him in (Doha 4)
  • He meets Vibhishana in a house marked with Rama’s signs (Doha 5 to 7)
  • He sees Sita in the Ashoka grove (Doha 8)
  • Sita rebukes Ravana and the demonesses are set to frighten her (Doha 9 and 10)

The numbers show the doha nearest each moment, together with the chaupais that lead up to it.

Frequently asked questions

↳ Who tests Hanuman on his way over the sea?

The poem gives three tests. The mountain Mainaka rises from the water to offer him rest, Surasa, the mother of serpents, opens her mouth wider and wider to test his strength and wit, and a demoness who lives in the sea seizes flying creatures by their shadows. The poem does not name the third one here, though other tellings of the Ramayana call her Simhika.

↳ What does Lankini say after Hanuman strikes her?

She tells him that when Brahma gave Ravana his boon, he told her that when a monkey struck her and left her shaken, she should know that the demons were being destroyed. In Doha 4 she says that heaven and liberation put on one pan of a scale would not equal even a moment spent in the company of the good.

↳ Whose house does Hanuman find marked with Rama's signs?

It is the house of Vibhishana, Ravana's younger brother. Hanuman sees the weapons of Rama marked on it and a clump of fresh tulsi plants (Doha 5). Vibhishana wakes, calls on Rama's name, and after they speak he tells Hanuman how Sita is being kept.

↳ What does Sita say to Ravana in the Ashoka grove?

She keeps a blade of grass between herself and him as a screen and asks whether the light of a glow-worm could ever make a lotus open. In Doha 9 Ravana is enraged at hearing himself compared to a glow-worm and Rama to the sun, and he draws his sword.
