In shortHanuman reports to Ram, the army marches to the sea, and Vibhishana urges Ravana in open court to return Sita.

These dohas move from Hanuman’s report to the march south. He gives Ram the jewel and Sita’s message, receives the Lord’s gratitude, and Ram asks how Lanka was burned, to which Hanuman answers without pride.

Then the monkey host sets out and reaches the shore, while in Lanka Mandodari pleads with Ravana and is laughed at. The section closes in the court, where Vibhishana speaks plainly and asks his brother to return Sita.

This is part 4 of 6 of the Sundar Kand, the fifth book of the Ramcharitmanas by Tulsidas, and it carries Dohas 31 to 40. The previous part is Dohas 21 to 30.

In this part

  • Doha 31: Sita’s message and the crest jewel reach Ram
  • Doha 32: Ram says he cannot repay Hanuman
  • Doha 33: Hanuman credits the Lord’s power for burning Lanka
  • Doha 35: the army marches and camps by the sea
  • Doha 36: Mandodari advises Ravana to give up the quarrel
  • Doha 38 to 40: Vibhishana’s counsel in Ravana’s court

The numbers show the doha nearest each moment, together with the chaupais that lead up to it.

Frequently asked questions

↳ What does Hanuman tell Rama about Sita?

Hanuman gives Rama the jewel, which Rama presses to his heart. He then repeats her words: that she holds the feet of Rama and Lakshmana, is devoted in thought, word and deed, and asks in what fault she was abandoned. She says that her only fault is that her life did not leave when they were parted. In Doha 31 he adds that every moment feels like an age to her and asks Rama to set out at once.

↳ How does Rama respond to Hanuman?

Rama says that no one among gods, humans or sages is a helper like Hanuman, that he cannot repay him, and that he is in his debt. Hanuman, overcome, falls at his feet and asks to be protected (Doha 32). When Rama asks how he burned Lanka, Hanuman answers without pride that it was all Rama's power, and in Doha 33 that nothing is out of reach for one on whom the Lord is kind.

↳ What does Mandodari ask of Ravana?

She folds her hands and begs him to give up the quarrel with Rama and send Sita back, if he wants his own good. In Doha 36 she compares Rama's arrows to a swarm of snakes and the demons to frogs, and says he should act before the snakes swallow them.

↳ Which three flatterers ruin a kingdom, according to Doha 37?

The poem names a minister, a physician and a teacher. If they speak only to please, out of fear or hope, then the kingdom, the body and the faith, in that order, are quickly lost.
