In shortThe Lalita Sahasranama is the thousand names of the goddess Lalita, in 182 verses from the Lalitopakhyana of the Brahmanda Purana, taught by Hayagriva to Agastya. Bhaskararaya's eighteenth-century commentary is the standard explanation.

The Lalita Sahasranama is the thousand names of the goddess Lalita, also called Tripurasundari, Rajarajeshvari and Shri Mata, the supreme Mother in the Shakta tradition of Shri Vidya. It is one of the best-known and most widely recited Sanskrit hymns to the Goddess,. The hymn is a poem of 182 verses in the anushtubh metre, and a closing line states that it is the thousand names of Lalita.

Its home is the Lalitopakhyana, the Story of Lalita, in the Brahmanda Purana. In that story the sage Hayagriva, who is Vishnu in a horse-headed form, tells the sage Agastya the story of the goddess, her defeat of the demon Bhandasura, her dwelling in the Shri Chakra, and then the thousand names. The names themselves are said to have been composed by eight divine speech-goddesses, Vashini and the others, at the Goddess’s own command. This is the tradition’s account, and the date of the hymn is not known. The standard commentary, the Saubhagya-Bhaskara, was written in the early eighteenth century by the Shri Vidya scholar Bhaskararaya, and it is the oldest full explanation of the names that we have.

The verses move through a plan that the commentators teach: the goddess’s form from head to foot (verses 1 to 21), her seat and her court (22 to 28), the story of the battle with Bhandasura (24 to 34), the Kundalini and the inner centres (35 to 40 and 98 to 110), her many attributes, her nature beyond all qualities, and her place as the supreme goddess in the Shri Chakra. This page gives all 182 verses, one meditation verse and the closing line, with the Devanagari, a simple transliteration and a plain meaning in which the names of each verse are glossed in order. Many names have two or three traditional readings, so the glosses give one common sense and do not claim to settle the debates of the commentators.

The page is long because it holds every verse. A note under the text lists the places where the printed text of Bhaskararaya differs from the popular text. For other hymns to the Goddess see the Devi Suktam, the Shri Suktam and the Bhavani Ashtakam.

The text, transliteration and meaning

The meditation verse comes first. The names follow in 182 verses of two lines each, and the last line ends the hymn.

Text: the popular text of the Lalita Sahasranama as typed on Sanskrit Wikisource, checked against Bhaskararaya's Saubhagya-Bhaskara (Nirnaya Sagar Press, fourth edition, revised by Wasudev Laxman Shastri Pansikar). Transliteration is simplified; meanings are our own. Verse numbers appear as labels above each verse.

The popular text, the one sung in most homes, and the text that stands in Bhaskararaya’s commentary agree on almost all of the 182 verses. The printed page of the Nirnaya Sagar edition of the commentary was checked in the places where the typed texts disagreed, and the following readings were seen on it:

  • Verse 17: kamesha-jnana-saubhagya-mardava-oru-dvaya-anvita in Bhaskararaya’s print, where the popular text has kamesha-jnata-saubhagya… (“whose thighs are known to Kameshvara”).
  • Verse 40: mahasaktih kundalini in the print, where the popular text has mahashaktih kundalini.
  • Verse 78: samhritashesha-pakhanda (“who has destroyed all heresy”), where the popular text has pashanda. The commentary explains the first form directly.
  • Verse 92: the print has mada-aghurnita (with a long vowel in the first part of the word) and digdhanga with a final a, where the popular text has madaghurnita and digdhangi.
  • Verse 145: chanda-munda-asura-nishudani in the print (which the commentary reads as “slayer of Chanda and Munda”), against nishudini.
  • Verse 163: sudhasruti in the print, against sudhasriti.
  • Verse 171: kaivalya-phala-dayini (“giver of the fruit of liberation”) in the print, against kaivalya-pada-dayini, which repeats the end of verse 125. The commentator avoids the repeat.

Smaller differences are matters of spelling and the way nasals are written: nijasamlapa and nijasallapa in verse 11, samchhanna and sanchhanna in verse 19, samketa and sanketa in verse 36. The printed text of Bhaskararaya also reads shantodari in verse 43, which is the form used on this page; the Wikisource text has shatodari, which is a plain typing slip. In verse 36 the same text has kalevara, with a v. The thousand-name total depends on how the commentators divide some compounds, so a few names are counted in different ways. For example, shrutih smritih in verse 110 is two names in the popular count.

When and how it is traditionally recited

The Lalita Sahasranama is recited on Fridays, on the full moon and through both Navratris, the spring and the autumn nine nights. The fifth day of the autumn Navratri is called Lalita Panchami, and many Shri Vidya devotees read the hymn on that day. It is also read at Navratri, at the end of the worship of the Shri Chakra, and as a group, with one person leading each verse. The Sharad Navratri page and the Chaitra Navratri page give the dates for your city, and the Navratri daily puja guide describes the nine nights at home. The Purnima vrat guide and our Purnima page cover the full moon.

The recitation takes about forty-five minutes at an unhurried pace. In many families the thousand names are said with a nyasa and a dhyana first, as taught by a guru, and some traditions say that the hymn should be taken up by initiation. Others read it openly as a devotional text. This page does not take a side: if you have a teacher or a family tradition, follow it. The text does not require any count or day.

What the tradition says it is for

The hymn is a portrait of the Goddess drawn in many strokes: her bodily beauty, in the first twenty verses, her court and her battle, her place in the inner body as Kundalini, her many forms in the worlds, and her nature as pure awareness beyond every name (verses 43 to 52). The commentators read the same names on three levels, the outer, the inner and the highest. One teaching is that the Goddess is the one consciousness, called Shiva and Shakti when it is seen as light and as awareness.

Verses 98 to 110 describe the goddesses of the six inner centres, each with a colour, a weapon and a kind of food. These are tantric images, and they are not for casual use as a practice. The hymn promises its fruits in a section after the names, and many people read it for peace of mind and well-being. These are statements of faith, and no result in life is promised. If you are unwell or in difficulty, please also consult a doctor or another qualified adviser. The goddess is also honoured at Diwali as Lakshmi, for whom the Mahalakshmi Ashtakam is also read.

Pronunciation notes

The names are in the anushtubh metre, and most are long compounds, so they are read in chunks. For example, chidagni-kunda-sambhuta deva-karya-samudyata is read as chid-agni-kun-da sam-bhu-ta de-va-kar-ya sa-mu-dya-ta. The ch is as in “church”, and sh as in “shoe”. The vowel ri in shri, hrim and krishna is a soft rolled r with a short i.

The hymn begins with the syllable Om and the words shri mata shri maharajni. The names hrimkari (verse 70) and klimkari (verse 125) end in seed syllables, hrim and klim, which are pronounced with a clear, closed hum on the final m. Long names with many consonants, such as shuddhavidyankura-akara-dvija-pankti-dvaya-ujjvala in verse 10, are best learned slowly, a few syllables at a time, from someone who recites them.

How the text on this page is sourced

The Lalitopakhyana belongs to the Uttarabhaga of the Brahmanda Purana, and the online corpus that gives scholarly e-texts (GRETIL) has only the first part of the Purana, which does not contain it. A critical edition is therefore not available, and this page rests on a typed edition and a printed one. The Devanagari follows the text of the thousand names on Sanskrit Wikisource (the page “श्रीललितासहस्रनामस्तोत्रम्”), which is the popular text. It was compared line by line with the root text of Bhaskararaya’s Saubhagya-Bhaskara as typed on Wikisource, and 305 of its 370 lines agreed exactly. The differences were then looked at one by one and, in the places that matter, on the printed page of the commentary (the Nirnaya Sagar Press edition, fourth edition, revised by Wasudev Laxman Shastri Pansikar, scanned on archive.org). In the places that were checked, Bhaskararaya’s print agrees with the popular text apart from the seven readings listed above. The typed commentary also has a few of its own typing slips, such as ragamathana in verse 46 and barbaralaka in verse 111, which the print does not have.

Three typing slips in the Wikisource text were corrected from the print: kalevara in verse 36 (the Wikisource page had kalebara), shantodari in verse 43 (shatodari) and namnam in the closing line (written nam nam). The notes of the Wikisource editors that give alternative readings were not printed on this page.

Frequently asked questions

↳ What is the Lalita Sahasranama?

It is the thousand names of the goddess Lalita, also known as Tripurasundari, given in 182 verses from the Brahmanda Purana. Hayagriva tells the names to the sage Agastya, and it is one of the most widely recited hymns to the Goddess.

↳ Who composed the Lalita Sahasranama?

Tradition says that eight divine speech-goddesses, Vashini and others, composed the names at the command of Lalita, and that Hayagriva taught them to Agastya. The date is unknown. The oldest full commentary is Bhaskararaya's from the early eighteenth century.

↳ When is the Lalita Sahasranama recited?

Many people read it on Fridays, on the full moon, during Navratri and on Lalita Panchami. Some traditions teach that it should be taken up with the guidance of a teacher, and others read it openly. Customs differ.

↳ How many verses and names does it have?

The hymn has 182 verses of two lines each, plus a closing line, which together are counted as the thousand names. The count depends on how some compounds are divided, so commentators differ by a name or two in places.

↳ Does this text differ from the one my family uses?

Possibly in a word or two. The popular text and Bhaskararaya's print agree on almost every verse, and this page lists the seven readings in which they differ. Spelling of nasals and sandhi also varies in books and in recitation.

↳ Do I need initiation to read it?

Traditions differ. Some Shri Vidya lineages teach that the hymn belongs to initiates, while many devotees read it openly as a hymn of praise. If you have a teacher or a family tradition, follow it. This page gives the text for study and devotion.
