In shortVibhishana is driven out by Ravana, is welcomed by Ram despite the monkeys' doubts, and is given Lanka's kingship before the question of crossing the sea comes up.

In this part Vibhishana speaks plainly to his brother Ravana and is kicked out of the court for it. He crosses the sky to the shore of the sea, rehearsing in his mind how he longs to see Ram’s feet.

The monkey leaders doubt him, but Ram holds to his vow of shelter and receives him warmly. Ram explains what he values in a devotee, crowns Vibhishana king of Lanka, and then asks how the great sea can be crossed.

This is part 5 of 6 of the Sundar Kand, the fifth book of the Ramcharitmanas by Tulsidas, and it carries Dohas 41 to 50. The previous part is Dohas 31 to 40.

In this part

  • Vibhishana is kicked by Ravana and leaves for Ram (doha 41)
  • Vibhishana’s longing for Ram’s feet on the way (doha 42)
  • Ram declares his vow of shelter and sends for him (dohas 43 and 44)
  • Vibhishana’s plea and the embrace (dohas 45 to 47)
  • Ram’s account of the devotee he loves, and Vibhishana’s crowning (dohas 48 and 49)
  • The question of crossing the sea, with advice to ask the ocean (doha 50)

The numbers show the doha nearest each moment, together with the chaupais that lead up to it.

About the text on this part

The text of Dohas 41 to 50 follows the Gita Press printing described on the overview page. One correction was made: in the second line of Doha 44 the digital copy lacked कपि in जय कृपाल कहि कपि चले, and the scanned books have it.

Frequently asked questions

↳ Why does Ravana strike Vibhishana?

Vibhishana speaks plainly in the court and begs his brother to return Sita. Ravana, in anger, kicks him. The poem says that Vibhishana took hold of his brother's feet again and again, and then set out through the sky with his ministers, saying that he was going to Rama.

↳ What does Rama say about those who turn away someone seeking refuge?

In Doha 43 he says that anyone who rejects a person seeking shelter, out of fear for their own interest, is low and sinful, and that even seeing such a person is a loss. He tells the monkeys to bring Vibhishana, whether he comes as a friend or otherwise.

↳ Which devotees does Rama call as dear as his own life?

Doha 48 names people who worship with a form, who are devoted to the welfare of others, who are firm in right conduct and discipline, and who love the feet of Brahmins. The poem frames it as Rama's own speech.

↳ What does Rama give Vibhishana?

He crowns him king of Lanka. Doha 49 says that Ravana's wealth, which Shiva had given for his ten heads, was given by Rama to Vibhishana, almost shyly. Immediately afterwards Rama asks how the great sea can be crossed.
