In shortThe Vishnu Sahasranama is the thousand names of Vishnu, recited by Bhishma to Yudhishthira in the Anushasana Parva of the Mahabharata. It runs to 107 verses of names, with opening and closing verses, and tradition credits Vyasa.

The Vishnu Sahasranama is the thousand names of Vishnu, the best known of all the Sanskrit lists of names (sahasranama). It is a hymn of 107 verses, each verse naming nine or ten of the thousand, and it is recited by Vaishnavas and by many others across India and the world. It is also one of the most widely chanted texts in Hinduism, and in many families it is read at a fixed time each week.

The names come from the Mahabharata. In the Anushasana Parva (the Book of Instruction), the old warrior Bhishma lies on his bed of arrows after the great battle, and Yudhishthira, the eldest Pandava, asks him two questions: who is the one god, and what is the one dharma that frees a person from the bond of birth and death. Bhishma answers by reciting the thousand names of Vishnu, which tradition says the sage Vyasa taught him. In the Critical Edition of the Mahabharata the names are in chapter 135 of the Anushasana Parva, and in many older printed editions the same chapter is numbered 149.

This page gives the hymn as it stands in the Critical Edition, the scholarly text of the Mahabharata prepared at the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute in Pune from the manuscripts. That text is the oldest and most reliable we can use, and it turns out to match the form people recite today almost word for word. The Devanagari is given with a simple transliteration. For each verse there is a plain meaning in which the names are glossed in order. Many names have more than one traditional meaning, and the commentators differ, so the glosses give a common sense and do not claim to settle them.

The page is long, because it holds every verse. You can read it in three parts: the opening conversation (13 verses), the thousand names (107 verses) and the closing verses on the fruits of reciting the hymn (22 verses). A note under the text lists the places where the critical text and the popular text differ. For a short companion in praise of Vishnu see the Achyutashtakam, and for Rama, who is counted among Vishnu’s avatars, the Ram Raksha Stotra.

Text: the Critical Edition of the Mahabharata (Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, Pune), Anushasana Parva 13.135.1 to 142, as keyed for GRETIL; checked against Sanskrit Wikisource. Transliteration is simplified; meanings are our own. Verse numbers appear as labels above each verse.

The popular text, the one printed in most books and sung in most homes, is the Critical Edition’s text with a handful of differences. Comparing the two verse by verse, 15 of the 107 name verses differ in some letter. In seven the difference is in the names themselves, and the rest are matters of spelling, sandhi (how words join) or punctuation. The seven are:

  • Verse 12: the Critical Edition has samatma sammitah samah (“the same self in all; the measured; the even-minded”), and the popular text has samatma ‘sammitah samah (“the immeasurable”).
  • Verse 32: pavanah pavano ’nilah (wind, purifier, air) against pavanah pavano ’nalah (the last name is fire).
  • Verse 43: virato (“the one who has turned away”) against virajah (“free of passion”), the reading of many printed books, which often add virato in brackets as the alternative.
  • Verse 69: shurah shaurir janeshvarah against shaurih shurajaneshvarah, the same names in a different order and joining.
  • Verse 87: the name before the last of the line is pavana (“the wind”) with a short first vowel in the critical text, and pavana with a long first vowel (“the purifier”) in the popular text.
  • Verse 95: naikado (“the giver of many gifts”) against naikajah (“the one born many times”), and adbhutam against adbhutah.
  • Verse 103: pranakrit (“the maker of life-breath”) against pranabhrit (“the bearer of life-breath”).

Smaller differences include sattva spelt with one t or two in verse 54, chaturasra and chaturashra in verse 100, and vasudevo in the keyed file of verse 76, which is printed here as vasudevah sarvasunilayah, the only form that scans and the reading of every printed edition. None of the differences changes the sense of the hymn.

The Critical Edition leaves out the passages that the popular text has before and after the names: the opening verses of meditation (shuklambaradharam and the invocations to Vyasa), the nyasa and the viniyoga, the verse of meditation that begins kshirodanvat-pradeshe, and the long run of closing verses after the phalashruti that begin with Arjuna’s praise of Krishna. A few of them are given in the footnotes of the Critical Edition as verses found in some manuscripts only. They are traditional and beautiful, and your family may use them, but they are not part of the oldest text, and this page does not include them.

When and how it is traditionally recited

The Vishnu Sahasranama is recited by many families on Ekadashi, the eleventh day of each fortnight, which is dedicated to Vishnu, and on Thursdays. It is read before and during the Vaishnava festivals, on Janmashtami and Ram Navami, and at a Satyanarayan puja. Some people read it in the early morning after a bath. In some temples and homes it is recited in a group, with one person leading each verse and the rest repeating it. The Ekadashi vrat guide and the Satyanarayan puja guide explain the observances with which it is paired, and our Ekadashi page lists the dates for your city.

Reciting the whole hymn takes about twenty to thirty minutes at an unhurried pace. Many people read one verse a day, or a few, and work through the hymn over a few months. There is no fixed count, and none is stated in the text. The text says that the Lord is pleased by plain devotion and by regular recitation. Teachers also say that understanding even a few of the names is better than reciting quickly without attention. Families and teachers differ in the order and the preliminary verses, so follow your own lineage if you have one.

What the tradition says it is for

The hymn begins with Yudhishthira’s question about the one god and the one way of release, and Bhishma’s answer is that the highest dharma is to praise the lotus-eyed one with devotion. The names are traditionally read as descriptions of one reality seen from many sides: as the source of all things (vishvam, prabhava), as the inner witness (sakshi, kshetrajna), as the saviour and the refuge (sharana, gati), as the teacher and the Veda (guru, veda), and as the one who takes forms to protect the world (Narasimha, Vamana, Varaha, Rama, Krishna, Balarama and others). In the Advaita reading of Shankara and in the Vishishtadvaita reading of Parashara Bhatta, who wrote a commentary in the twelfth century, the same names are explained in different ways, and both are old and respected.

The closing verses state benefits: freedom from fear, steady good fortune, fame, health, the end of anger and greed, and finally the eternal Brahman. This page reports those as the text’s own statements of faith. They are not promises, and none replaces medical, legal or financial advice. Closing verse 3 lists the results for the four classes (varna) of the old social order, as the text says; we have kept it, and today the hymn is read by anyone who wishes to read it. If you are ill or frightened, please see a doctor or other qualified adviser as well as praying.

Pronunciation notes

The hymn is in the anushtubh metre, with eight syllables in each quarter of a verse, and the names run in a steady, even rhythm. Say each name clearly and give a very short pause after it. The names with vishva are said vish-va, and keshava is ke-sha-va. The visarga at the end of a name, as in vishnuh, is a light echo of the vowel before it, like vishnu-hu, and it is quieter than the name itself.

Long compounds are common, so read them in chunks: bhuta-bhavya-bhavat-prabhuh in the first verse is “lord of the past, the future and the present”. The letter ri (as in hrishikesha) is a soft ri, and jn in jnana is said gya in the north and jna in the south, and either is accepted. The sacred syllable pranava in verse 102 is Om, and shankha-bhrit in verse 107 is shan-kha-bhrit, with a breathy kh.

How the text on this page is sourced

The Devanagari follows the e-text of the Anushasana Parva of the Mahabharata in GRETIL (Göttingen Register of Electronic Texts in Indian Languages), file mbh_13_u.htm. This is the text of the Critical Edition of the Mahabharata published by the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, Pune, entered from the printed volume with copyright held by the Institute (1999), on the basis of an entry by Muneo Tokunaga and others, and revised by John Smith of Cambridge. This is level one of the sourcing rule: a scholarly edition built on the manuscripts. GRETIL writes it in roman letters with the words divided, so it was turned into Devanagari by a script that rejoins the words as in a printed book, and the nasals were written in the printed way (shantanavam and not shamtanavam).

The critical text of the hymn is chapter 135 of the Anushasana Parva, verses 1 to 142. Verses 1 to 13 are the opening, 14 to 120 the 107 verses of names and 121 to 142 the closing verses. Lines marked as variant or additional in the apparatus (the starred verses) are left out, since they are not in the constituted text. As a second witness the text was compared letter by letter with the popular text on Sanskrit Wikisource (the page “श्रीविष्णुसहस्रनामस्तोत्रम्”), as listed above. No printed edition older than 1960 with the Sanskrit text was available for this check, since the old print found on archive.org, the 1927 Adyar translation of Shankara’s commentary, gives the text in English only.

Frequently asked questions

↳ What is the Vishnu Sahasranama?

It is the thousand names of Vishnu, given as a hymn of 107 verses of names with opening and closing verses, from the Anushasana Parva of the Mahabharata. Bhishma recites it to Yudhishthira, and it is one of the most widely chanted Hindu texts.

↳ Who wrote the Vishnu Sahasranama?

Tradition credits the sage Vyasa, who is also credited with the Mahabharata, and the text says that Bhishma recited the names as Vyasa taught them. The oldest surviving commentary is traditionally attributed to Shankara. These are traditions and not historical records.

↳ When is the Vishnu Sahasranama recited?

Many people read it on Ekadashi and on Thursdays, on Janmashtami and Ram Navami, and at a Satyanarayan puja. Some read a few verses each morning. There is no fixed count or time in the text, and each family follows its own practice.

↳ Do the thousand names all differ?

Not quite. A few names repeat, and the tradition explains each use in a different sense. The count of a thousand is traditional, and the commentators divide and read some names differently.

↳ Why does this page differ from the version I know?

The popular text is almost the same as the Critical Edition, with a few differences listed on this page, such as virato and viraja in verse 43. The popular recitation also has opening and closing verses that are not in the critical text.

↳ Is it fine to read it without knowing the meaning?

Yes. Many people learn it by ear first. The meanings given under each verse are there to help you read with attention, and understanding even a few of the names is traditionally considered a good start.
