These last ten dohas move from Lanka’s court to the shore of the sea. Ram sits on darbha grass at the water’s edge while Ravana’s spies, disguised as monkeys, are caught, beaten and sent back with Lakshmana’s letter. Suka carries it to Ravana, describes the monkey army, and gives the warning of Vibhishana’s message.
Ravana scorns it, and Suka is kicked and goes to Ram, where an old curse ends. After three days of silent waiting, Ram readies his bow, the sea appears as a brahmin with jewels, and he names Nila and Nala as the bridge builders. The kand closes with Tulsidas’s own words on the worth of hearing Ram’s virtues.
This is part 6 of 6 of the Sundar Kand, the fifth book of the Ramcharitmanas by Tulsidas, and it carries Dohas 51 to 60. The previous part is Dohas 41 to 50.
In this part
- Doha 52: Lakshmana frees the captured spies and gives them a letter for Ravana.
- Doha 54 and 55: Suka describes the monkey commanders and their strength.
- Doha 56: Ravana receives the letter and laughs; Suka is kicked and goes to Ram.
- Doha 57: three days pass, and Ram speaks in anger at the silent sea.
- Doha 58 and 59: the sea appears as a brahmin and asks forgiveness, and Ram asks how the army may cross.
- Doha 60: Nila and Nala are named, and the kand ends with praise of Ram’s virtues.
The numbers show the doha nearest each moment, together with the chaupais that lead up to it.
The text, transliteration and meaning

Sakal charit kahi prabhuhi sunava, charan bandi pathodhi sidhava
MeaningSeeing Ram's great strength and valour, the sea was glad and relieved. He told the Lord the whole story, bowed at his feet and went away.

Sukh bhavan samsay saman davan bishad raghupati gun gana
Taji sakal as bharos gavahi sunahi santat sath mana
MeaningThe sea went to his home, and this plan pleased the Lord of the Raghus. Tulsidas sings this deed, which removes the stains of the Kali age, as far as his understanding allows. The virtues of Raghupati are a home of happiness, a cure for doubt and a remover of sorrow. Give up all other hope and trust, sing and hear them always, O foolish mind.
Doha 60

Sakal sumangal dayak raghunayak gun gana
Sadar sunahim te tarahim bhav sindhu bina jalajan
MeaningThe singing of the Lord of the Raghus' virtues gives every good. The poem says that those who listen with respect cross the ocean of worldly life without needing a boat.

Frequently asked questions
↳ Who are the spies in the poem?
They are spies sent by Ravana in the form of monkeys. They praised Rama's kindness to those who come for shelter so openly that they forgot to hide who they were, and were caught. Sugriva ordered them maimed and sent back, the monkeys began to beat them, and Lakshmana, moved by pity, set them free with a letter for Ravana.
↳ What does the letter say?
Doha 52 gives Rama's spoken message: give back Sita and meet Rama, or the hour of your death has come. Doha 56 gives the letter itself, which says not to please the mind with words, that there is no escape from Rama even in the shelter of Vishnu, Brahma or Shiva, and that Ravana must give up pride like his brother or burn with his family like a moth in the fire of Rama's arrows. Ravana takes the letter laughing, and Suka, who brought it, later urges peace, is kicked and goes over to Rama.
↳ Why does Rama grow angry at the sea?
He sat by the water for three days asking for a way across, and the sea did not answer. Doha 57 says that he then spoke in anger, saying that without fear there is no love or respect, and he took up his bow. The sea then came in the form of a brahmin and asked forgiveness.
↳ What should I make of the line about the drum, the rustic, the shudra, the animal and the woman?
The Ocean says it in the chaupais after Doha 58, when he is frightened and gives his reasons for having kept Rama waiting. It is a character's speech in a sixteenth-century poem, and the word tadana is read in different ways, as beating, as training and as watchful care. Many readers find the line hard to accept, and commentators have argued over both the word and the line for a long time. It is printed here exactly as the Gita Press edition has it, and this page does not offer it as its own view.
↳ Who builds the bridge, and how does the kand end?
The sea names Nila and Nala, two monkey brothers who as children received a sage's blessing, and says that heavy rocks touched by them will float across by Rama's power. Doha 60 closes the book with Tulsidas saying that singing Rama's virtues brings every good, and that those who listen with respect cross the ocean of worldly life without needing a boat.
