This part opens in Ravana’s court, where Hanuman is brought as a captive and speaks plainly about the power behind Ram, urging the king to return Sita. The advice is met with scorn, and an order is given that the tail of the messenger be set alight.
What follows is the burning of Lanka, a farewell with Sita who gives her crest-jewel as a token, the leap back across the sea, and the joyful reunion with the monkey band. The section closes at doha 30 with Ram asking how Janaki is keeping, and Hanuman beginning his answer.
This is part 3 of 6 of the Sundar Kand, the fifth book of the Ramcharitmanas by Tulsidas, and it carries Dohas 21 to 30. The previous part is Dohas 11 to 20.
In this part
- Hanuman tells Ravana whose power sustains the world (doha 21)
- Advice to return Sita and take refuge in Ram (doha 22 to 23)
- Vibhishana’s plea and the order to burn the tail (doha 24)
- Lanka burns, only Vibhishana’s house is spared (doha 25 to 26)
- Sita gives the crest-jewel and her message (doha 27)
- The monkeys in Madhuvan and the meeting with Ram (doha 28 to 30)
The numbers show the doha nearest each moment, together with the chaupais that lead up to it.
The text, transliteration and meaning
The verse comes first with its sound written out, and then the sense of it. Several of these chaupais are speeches, by Hanuman, by Vibhishana and by Ravana, so the speaker changes within a group.

Frequently asked questions
↳ What does Hanuman say in Ravana's court?
He says that the strength by which Ravana won the world is only a particle of the strength that belongs to Rama, and that he is the messenger of the one whose wife Ravana took away. He advises Ravana to give up pride and to seek Rama's shelter, and says that Rama would then overlook his fault.
↳ Who speaks up for Hanuman's life?
The poem says that Vibhishana came with the ministers, bowed, and begged that killing a messenger was against the rule of conduct and that some other punishment be chosen. All agreed. Ravana laughed and first said to send the monkey back maimed, and then, in Doha 24, that a monkey's love is for his tail, which should be wrapped in cloth soaked in oil and set alight.
↳ How does the fire turn against Lanka?
The tail is lit, and the poem says that at the Lord's urging the forty-nine winds blow. Hanuman grows until he touches the sky and goes from palace to palace. The city is burnt in a moment, and only Vibhishana's house is spared. He then puts out his tail in the sea.
↳ What does Sita give Hanuman to take back?
She takes the jewel from her hair, called the chudamani (the crest-jewel), and gives it to him as a token for Rama. She also sends a message, and the poem says that Hanuman comforted her before he left.
