This stretch opens in the ashoka grove with Sita in despair. Trijata, a demoness who is a friend to her, repeats a dream of Lanka’s fall, but Sita still asks for a pyre, and the leaves and stars give her no fire.
Hanuman then drops Rama’s ring, wins her trust, shows his huge form and takes her blessing. He wrecks the grove, defeats Akshay kumar and Meghnad’s helpers, and lets a Brahma weapon bind him so he can stand in Ravana’s court.
This is part 2 of 6 of the Sundar Kand, the fifth book of the Ramcharitmanas by Tulsidas, and it carries Dohas 11 to 20. The previous part is Dohas 1 to 10.
In this part
- Trijata’s dream of Lanka burning (after doha 10)
- Sita begs the ashoka tree for fire (doha 11 and soratha 12)
- The ring is dropped and Sita recognises it (soratha 12 and doha 13)
- Rama’s message of separation (dohas 14 and 15)
- Hanuman shows his great form and Sita blesses him (doha 16)
- The grove is destroyed and Meghnad binds him with the Brahma weapon (dohas 17 to 19)
The numbers show the doha nearest each moment, together with the chaupais that lead up to it.

About the text on this part
The Devanagari for dohas 11 to 20 follows the Gita Press printing, as set out on the overview page. One correction was made here: in the chaupais between Doha 14 and Doha 15 the digital copy gave एतेनहि, and the scanned books read एतनेहि.

Frequently asked questions
↳ What is Trijata's dream?
Trijata is a demoness among Sita's guards who is devoted to Rama. In her dream a monkey burns Lanka and the demon host is destroyed, Ravana rides a donkey, naked and with a shaven head, and Vibhishana is given the kingdom of Lanka. She says the dream will prove true, and the other demonesses are frightened into leaving Sita alone.
↳ How does Sita come to trust Hanuman?
She sees a ring with Rama's name on it and is torn between joy and sorrow. She reasons that no one can defeat Rama and that such a ring cannot be made by illusion. Hanuman then sings Rama's qualities in her hearing and tells the story from the beginning, and Doha 13 says that trust arose in her and she knew in thought, word and deed that he was Rama's servant.
↳ What does Hanuman do in the Ashoka grove?
Asking Sita's leave to eat, he eats the fruit and breaks the trees. The guards are struck down, and Ravana sends Akshay kumar, his son, and then Meghnad. Hanuman fights them off until Meghnad uses the weapon of Brahma.
↳ Why does Hanuman let the Brahma weapon bind him?
Doha 19 says that he did not want to lessen the glory of the weapon of Brahma, and so he allowed it to bind him. The poem treats it as a choice made out of respect and also as the way to be brought before Ravana.
