In shortThe Hanuman Bahuk is a Hindi poem of 44 verses by Tulsidas, addressed to Hanuman. Bahuk means the arm, and the later verses plead for relief from a severe pain in the arms.

The Hanuman Bahuk is a devotional poem of 44 verses addressed to Hanuman, and it is credited to Tulsidas, the sixteenth-century poet of the Ramcharitmanas. Bahuk comes from bahu, the arm. The poem opens with praise of Hanuman’s strength and his deeds in the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, then turns, from about verse 22, into a personal appeal: the poet describes a long and painful trouble in his arms and asks his protector why he delays.

The verses are written in Awadhi Hindi in four long metres: the chhappay (verses 1 and 2), the jhulna (verse 3), the ghanakshari (most of the rest) and the savaiya (verses 16 to 19 and verse 36). Each card below gives the verse, a simple transliteration and a plain meaning written from the Hindi itself. The Bahuk is printed with the Kavitavali, another poem of Tulsidas, in the scholarly collection of his works published by the Nagari Pracharini Sabha of Kashi.

The tradition says that Tulsidas composed it in his later years, when pain in his arms troubled him badly. That is a tradition and not a documented fact, and the text gives no date. What the verses do say, plainly, is that the poet suffered pain in his arms, tried medicines, charms and prayers, and in the end threw himself on Hanuman’s kindness. Please read it as a prayer and a piece of literature. It is not a treatment, and anyone with pain in the arms, shoulders or joints should see a doctor.

The text, transliteration and meaning

Read each verse first, then the meaning beneath it. The names are those of the Ramayana: Raghunatha, Raghubir and Janaki are Rama and Sita, Anjani and Kesari are Hanuman’s mother and father in the story, and the son of the Wind is Hanuman himself.

Verse 1, chhappay

Sindhu taran siy soch haran rabi bal baran tanu, Bhuj bisal murati karal kalahu ko kal janu, Gahan dahan niradahan lank nihsank bank bhuv, Jatudhan balavan man mad davan pavanasuv, Kah tulasidas sevat sulabh sevak hit santat nikat, Gun ganat namat sumirat japat saman sakal sankat bikat

MeaningHe crossed the sea and took away Sita's grief, and his body glows with the colour of the early morning sun. His arms are long and his form is fearsome, as if he were Death's own Death. Without any fear he burned Lanka, with its thick defences. His brows are arched, and he broke the pride of the strong demons: he is the son of the Wind. Tulsidas says that he is easy to win by service and always stands close to the servant who needs him. To praise him, bow to him, remember him and repeat his name is said to end every dreadful trouble.

Verse 2, chhappay

Svarn sail sankas koti rabi tarun tej ghan, Ur bisal bhujadand chand nakh bajr bajratan, Ping nayan bhrikuti karal rasana dasananan, Kapis kes karakas langur khal dal bal bhanan, Kah tulasidas bas jasu ur marutasut murati bikat, Santap pap tehi purush pahi sapanehun nahim avat nikat

MeaningHis body is like a mountain of gold, with the brilliance of crores of young suns. His chest is broad, his arms are mighty, and his nails and limbs are hard as a thunderbolt. His eyes are tawny, his brows fierce, his tongue, teeth and face terrible, his hair reddish and his tail rough, and he breaks the strength of the wicked hosts. Tulsidas says that sorrow and sin do not come near, even in a dream, the person in whose heart this awesome form of the Wind's son stays.

Verse 3, jhulna

Panchamukh chhamukh bhrigu mukhy bhat asur sur sarv sari samar samaratth suro, Bankuro bir birudait birudavali bed bandi badat paijapuro, Jasu gunagath raghunath kah jasu bal bipul jal bharit jag jaladhi jhuro, Duvan dal daman ko kaun tulasis hai pavan ko put rajaput ruro

MeaningAmong the champions, whether Shiva of the five faces, Kartikeya of the six, Parashurama or the many gods and demons, he is the one who can carry any battle through to its end. He is a bold and honoured warrior, and the bards of the Veda praise him as one who keeps his vow in full. Raghunatha himself spoke of his qualities and strength. Who else, says Tulsidas, can crush the armies of the enemy, if not this splendid warrior, the son of the Wind?

Verse 4, ghanakshari

Bhanusom parhan hanuman gaye bhanu man anumani sisu keli kiyo pheraphar so, Pachhile pagani gam gagan magan man kram ko n bhram kapi balak bihar so, Kautuk biloki lokapal hari har bidhi lochanani chakachaundhi chittani khabhar so, Bal kaindhaum bir ras dhiraj kai sahas kai tulasi sarir dhare sabani ko sar so

MeaningHanuman went to study with the Sun. The Sun, thinking it only a child's game, made an excuse. Hanuman faced the Sun and moved backwards across the sky with a cheerful mind, as a child plays, and no step of his lesson went wrong. Seeing this wonder, the guardians of the quarters, Vishnu, Shiva and Brahma were dazzled and their minds were shaken. Tulsidas says they wondered whether this was strength itself, or the spirit of heroism, or courage, or boldness, all gathered into one body.

Verse 5, ghanakshari

Bharat mem parath ke rathaketu kapiraj gajyo suni kururaj dal hal bal bho, Kahyo dron bhisham samir sut mahabir bir ras bari nidhi jako bal jal bho, Banar subhay bal keli bhumi bhanu lagi phalang phalang hutem ghati nabh tal bho, Nai nai math jori jori hath jodha jo haim hanuman dekhe jagajivan ko phal bho

MeaningIn the great war the monkey king roared from the banner of Arjuna's chariot, and the Kuru king's army trembled at the sound. Drona and Bhishma said that this was the mighty son of the Wind, whose strength is like the water of the ocean of heroic feeling. As a child at play he had leapt from the earth towards the Sun, and the whole sky seemed less than a step to him. The warriors bowed again and again with joined hands, and the sight of Hanuman became the reward of their lives.

Verse 6, ghanakshari

Go pad payodhi kari holika jyom lai lank nipat nisank par pur gal bal bho, Dron so pahar liyo khyal hi ukhari kar kanduk jyom kapi khel bel kaiso phal bho, Sankat samaj asamanjas bho ram raj kaj jug pugani ko karatal pal bho, Sahasi samatth tulasi ko nah ja ki banh lok pal palan ko phir thir thal bho

MeaningHe made the sea a cow's hoofprint and burned Lanka like a Holi fire, fearless, throwing the enemy's city into uproar. He tore up the mountain of Drona as if for sport and tossed it like a ball, as easily as picking a fruit from a creeper. When Rama's reign was in trouble, a task that might have taken ages was done in a moment, in the hollow of his hand. This strong and able warrior, says Tulsidas, is his lord, and his arms became the place where the world's guardians were settled firmly again.

Verse 7, ghanakshari

Kamath ki pithi jake gorani ki garaim mano nap ke bhajan bhari jal nidhi jal bho, Jatudhan davan paravan ko durg bhayo maha min bas timi tomani ko thal bho, Kumbhakarn ravan payod nad indhan ko tulasi pratap jako prabal anal bho, Bhisham kahat mere anuman hanuman sarikho trikal n trilok mahabal bho

MeaningThe hollows made by his feet in the tortoise's back were like measuring pots filled with ocean water. For the demons who fled before him, that same sea became a fortress to hide in and a home for crowds of great fish. Tulsidas says his glory was a blazing fire in which Ravana, Kumbhakarna and Meghanada burned like fuel. Bhishma says that, as he understands it, no one in the three times and the three worlds has been as mighty as Hanuman.

Verse 8, ghanakshari

Dut ram ray ko saput put paunako tu anjani ko nandan pratap bhuri bhanu so, Siy soch saman durit dosh daman saran aye avan lakhan priy pran so, Dasamukh dusah daridr daribe ko bhayo prakat tilok ok tulasi nidhan so, Gyan gunavan balavan seva savadhan saheb sujan ur anu hanuman so

MeaningYou are Rama's messenger, a worthy son of the Wind, the joy of Anjani, as radiant as countless suns. You ease Sita's sorrow, destroy sin and fault, protect those who come for shelter and are dear as life to Lakshmana. You appeared as a refuge in the three worlds to destroy an unbearable distress like Ravana. So, says the poet, keep in your heart this wise and capable lord Hanuman, who is full of knowledge, virtue and strength and always ready to serve.

Verse 9, ghanakshari

Davan duvan dal bhuvan bidit bal bed jas gavat bibudh bandi chhor ko, Pap tap timir tuhin bighatan patu sevak saroruh sukhad bhanu bhor ko, Lok paralok tem bisok sapane n sok tulasi ke hiye hai bharoso ek or ko, Ram ko dularo das bamadev ko nivas nam kali kamataru kesari kisor ko

MeaningHis power to destroy the demon armies is known across the world, and the Vedas sing that he is the one who frees the gods from their prison. He is skilled at clearing the darkness of sin and the frost of suffering, like the morning sun for the lotus of his servants. Tulsidas rests on this one support, so he feels no grief in this world or the next, even in a dream. Dear to Rama, an embodiment of Shiva, the son of Kesari: his name is the wish-granting tree of this dark age.

Verse 10, ghanakshari

Mahabal sim maha bhim mahaban it mahabir bidit barayo raghubir ko, Kulis kathor tanu jor parai ror ran karuna kalit man dharamik dhir ko, Durjan ko kalaso karal pal sajjan ko sumire haran har tulasi ki pir ko, Siy sukh dayak dularo raghunayak ko sevak sahayak hai sahasi samir ko

MeaningHe is the limit of strength, utterly fierce, a great hero chosen by Raghubir. His body is as hard as a thunderbolt, and when he bears down the battlefield roars. He is full of compassion, steady and upright in mind. To the wicked he is Death itself, to the good a protector, and remembering him takes away Tulsidas's pain. He gives joy to Sita, he is dear to Raghunatha, and he is a bold helper of his servants.

Verse 11, ghanakshari

Rachibe ko bidhi jaise palibe ko hari har mich maribe ko jyaibe ko sudhapan bho, Dharibe ko dharani tarani tam dalibe ko sokhibe krisanu poshibe ko him bhanu bho, Khal dukh doshibe ko jan paritoshibe ko mangibo malinata ko modak sudan bho, Arat ki arati nivaribe ko tihun pur tulasi ko saheb hathilo hanuman bho

MeaningTo create he was Brahma, to preserve Vishnu, to destroy Shiva, and to give life he was the drink of immortality. To bear the world he was the earth, to scatter darkness the sun, to dry up he was fire, and to nourish the moon and the sun. To trouble the wicked, to please his servants, and to wash away the stain of begging, he is the giver of sweet and generous gifts. To remove the sorrows of the afflicted in the three worlds, says Tulsidas, his lord Hanuman has taken a firm vow.

Verse 12, ghanakshari

Sevak syokai jani janakis mane kani sanukul sulapani navai nath nank ko, Devi dev danav dayavane hai joraim hath bapure barak kaha aur raja rank ko, Jagat sovat baithe bagat binod mod take jo anarth so samarth ek ank ko, Sab din ruro parai puro jahan tahan tahi jake hai bharoso hiye hanuman hank ko

MeaningJanaki's lord Rama feels obliged to his servant, Shiva is favourable and Indra bows to him. Gods and demons fold their hands out of kindness, so what are poor and helpless kings? Waking or sleeping, sitting or wandering, in play and in joy, who could be strong enough to harm a servant of Hanuman? He will fare well always and everywhere, the one whose heart trusts in Hanuman's call.

Verse 13, ghanakshari

Sanug sagauri sanukul sulapani tahi lokapal sakal lakhan ram janaki, Lok paralok ko bisok so tilok tahi tulasi tamai kaha kahu bir anaki, Kesari kisor bandichhor ke nevaje sab kirati bimal kapi karunanidhan ki, Balak jyom pali haim kripalu muni siddhata ko jake hiye hulasati hank hanuman ki

MeaningShiva with his attendants and Gauri, all the guardians, and Lakshmana, Rama and Janaki are kind to the one whose heart is stirred by Hanuman's call. Tulsidas asks what craving such a person, free of grief in this world and the next, could have for the shelter of any other champion. When Kesari's son, the gracious freer of captives, is pleased, the sages and the perfected beings treat that person kindly and care for him like a child. Such is the spotless fame of the merciful lord of the monkeys.

Verse 14, ghanakshari

Karunanidhan balabuddhi ke nidhan mod mahima nidhan gunagyan ke nidhan hau, Bam dev rup bhup ram ke sanehi nam let det arth dharm kam niraban hau, Apane prabhav sitanath ke subhav sil lok bed bidhi ke bidush hanuman hau, Man ki bachan ki karam ki tihun prakar tulasi tiharo tum saheb sujan hau

MeaningYou are a treasury of compassion, strength and wisdom, a home of joy and glory, a dwelling of virtue and knowledge. You are dear to King Rama and a form of Shiva, and you give wealth, duty, desire and liberation to those who say your name. By your own power you know Rama's gentle nature, the ways of the world and the order of the Vedas. In mind, speech and deed Tulsidas is yours, and you are a wise master who knows him through and through.

Verse 15, ghanakshari

Man ko agam tan sugam kiye kapis kaj maharaj ke samaj saj saje haim, Devabandi chhor ranaror kesari kisor jug jug jag tere birad biraje haim, Bir barajor ghati jor tulasi ki or suni sakuchane sadhu khal gan gaje haim, Bigari sanvar anjani kumar kije mohim jaise hot aye hanuman ke nivaje haim

MeaningFor Maharaj Rama's work you gathered every resource and, by your own body, made easy what the mind could not reach. Son of Kesari, you free the gods from prison and make the battlefield roar, and your fame has stood through every age. Mighty hero, why has your strength fallen short for Tulsidas, so that the good feel awkward and the wicked rejoice? Son of Anjani, mend my spoiled fortunes the way they have always been mended when you were pleased.

Verse 16, savaiya (mattagayand)

Jan siromani hau hanuman sada jan ke man bas tiharo, Dharo bigaro maim kako kaha kehi karan khijhat hom to tiharo, Saheb sevak nate te hato kiyo so tahan tulasi ko n charo, Dosh sunaye tem agehun ko hoshiyar hvai hom man to hiy haro

MeaningJewel among the wise, Hanuman, you always live in your servants' minds. Whom have I harmed or ruined, and why are you angry with me, when I am only your servant? You have dropped me from the bond of servant and master, and Tulsi has no say in that. My heart has lost courage, yet tell me my fault so that I can be careful in future.

Verse 17, savaiya (mattagayand)

Tere thape uthapai n mahes thapai thir ko kapi je ghar ghale, Tere nivaje garib nivaj birajat bairin ke ur sale, Sankat soch sabai tulasi liye nam phatai makari ke se jale, Burh bhaye bali merihi bar ki hari pare bahutai nat pale

MeaningNo one can unsettle what you have set up, not even Shiva, and who can set up again what you pull down? Friend of the poor, those you favour become a thorn in the hearts of their enemies. Tulsidas says that when your name is taken, every trouble and worry tears like a spider's web. But have you grown old just in my turn, or are you tired from looking after so many poor people?

Verse 18, savaiya (mattagayand)

Sindhu tare bare bir dale khal jare haim lank se bank mavase, Taim ran kehari kehari ke bidale ari kunjar chhail chhava se, Toso samatth susaheb sei sahai tulasi dukh dosh dava se, Banarabaj barhe khal khechar lijat kyom n lapeti lava se

MeaningYou crossed the sea, struck down great and wicked warriors, and burned strongholds like Lanka. You are the lion of the battlefield: the enemy elephants, dressed up like young cubs, you tore apart as a lion does. With so able and kind a master, why should Tulsidas bear the fire of sorrow and fault? Hawk among monkeys, many wicked birds have multiplied. Why do you not catch them as a hawk takes quail?

Verse 19, savaiya (mattagayand)

Achchh bimardan kanan bhani dasanan anan bha n niharo, Baridanad akampan kumbhakaran se kunjar kehari baro, Ram pratap hutasan kachchh bipachchh samir samir dularo, Pap te sap te tap tihun tem sada tulasi kah so rakhavaro

MeaningDestroyer of Akshaya, you laid waste the grove and did not so much as look at Ravana's face. Like a young lion among elephants, you broke the pride of Meghanada, Akampana and Kumbhakarna. Rama's glory is fire to the straw heap of his enemies, and the Wind's son is the wind that feeds it. May that dear son of the Wind guard Tulsidas always from sin, from curses and from torment.

Verse 20, ghanakshari

MeaningI give myself to you. Do not forget your word, for the world knows how you treat those who rely on you. What fault could Tulsi have committed to make him unfit for your service? Remember your lordship. If you think me guilty, punish me a thousand ways, but do not kill with poison one who would die from being given a sweet. You are strong and bold, the Wind's darling and Raghubir's beloved: end the pain of my arm quickly.

Verse 21, ghanakshari

Balak biloki bali baretem apano kiyo dinabandhu daya kinhim nirupadhi nyariye, Ravaro bharoso tulasi ke ravaroi bal as ravariye das ravaro bichariye, Baro bikaral kali kako n bihal kiyo mathe pagu bali ko nihari so nivariye, Kesari kisor ranaror barajor bir banh pir rahu matu jyom pachhari mariye

MeaningFriend of the helpless, I give myself to you. You took me in from my childhood and showed me a strange and selfless kindness. Consider that Tulsi is your servant, with your trust, your strength and your hope. The terrible Kali age has troubled everyone. See the foot of that mighty one on my head too, and remove it. Son of Kesari, roaring and mighty warrior, strike down the pain in my arm as Rahu's mother Simhika was struck down.

Verse 22, ghanakshari

Uthape thapanathir thape uthapanahar kesari kumar bal apano sanbhariye, Ram ke gulamani ko kam taru ramadut mose din dubare ko takiya tihariye, Saheb samarth to som tulasi ke mathe par sou aparadh binu bir bandhi mariye, Pokhari bisal banhu bali barichar pir makari jyom pakari ke badan bidariye

MeaningSon of Kesari, you gave a home to the displaced and uprooted the settled. Remember that strength of yours. Servant of Rama, you are a wishing tree to Rama's servants and the support of weak and poor people like me. Though so mighty a master stands over Tulsi, he is bound and beaten. My arm is a wide pond and this pain is a water creature in it. Seize it as a crocodile seizes its prey and tear open its mouth.

Verse 23, ghanakshari

Ram ko saneh ram sahas lakhan siy ram ki bhagati soch sankat nivariye, Mud marakat rog barinidhi heri hare jiv jamavant ko bharoso tero bhariye, Kudiye kripal tulasi suprem pabbayatem suthal subel bhalu baithi kai bichariye, Mahabir bankure baraki banh pir kyom n lankini jyom lat ghat hi marori mariye

MeaningI have love for Rama, Rama's courage, and his devotion, and with the grace of Rama, Lakshmana and Sita I have some strength. Remove my grief and trouble. The monkeys of joy, looking at the great sea of illness, have lost heart, and the soul, like Jambavan, trusts greatly in you. Leap, merciful one, from the mountain of Tulsi's love. Like Jambavan, the soul sits on the high Suvela hill of the heart and waits. Mighty hero, why do you not kick this pain in my arm, as you did Lankini, and crush it?

Verse 24, ghanakshari

Lok paralokahun tilok n bilokiyat tose samarath chash charihun nihariye, Karm kal lokapal ag jag jivajal nath hath sab nij mahima bichariye, Khas das ravaro nivas tero tasu ur tulasi so dev dukhi dekhiyat bhariye, Bat tarumul banhusul kapikachchhu beli upaji sakeli kapi keli hi ukhariye

MeaningAcross this world, the next and all the three worlds I look with four eyes and see no one as able as you. Lord, action, time, the guardians and every moving and unmoving being are in your hands. Consider your own greatness. Your own servant, in whose heart you live, Tulsi, is in great distress. The pain from the wind in my arm is like the itch-bean creeper that monkeys love. Gather its root, and uproot it as in play.

Verse 25, ghanakshari

Karam karal kams bhumipal ke bharose baki bak bhagini kahu tem kaha daraigi, Bari bikaral bal ghatini n jat kahi banhu bal balak chhabile chhote chharaigi, Ai hai banai besh ap hi bichari dekh pap jay sab ko guni ke pale paraigi, Putana pisachini jyom kapi kanh tulasi ki banh pir mahabir tere mare maraigi

MeaningTrusting in Kamsa, the king of karma, Putana, the sister of Baka, feared no one. Terrible, a killer of children, whose play cannot be told, she will deceive small and charming babies with the strength of her arm. She has come in a made-up form. Think, and see that she will fall into the hands of a good and able one. The pain in Tulsi's arm is Putana, Hanuman is the child Krishna, and it will die by your blow.

Verse 26, ghanakshari

Bhal ki ki kal ki ki rosh ki tridosh ki hai bedan bisham pap tap chhal chhanh ki, Karaman kut ki ki jantr mantr but ki parahi jahi papini malin man manh ki, Paihahi sajay nat kahat bajay tohi bavari n hohi bani jani kapi nanh ki, An hanuman ki dohai balavan ki sapath mahabir ki jo rahai pir banh ki

MeaningIs this pain written on my forehead by fate, or the work of time, or anger, or the three humours, or the result of my terrible sins, or the shadow of some trouble? Is it the fruit of a charm or a spell? Go away, you wicked, filthy-minded pain, or I will announce loudly: do not turn mad, but know the nature of the lord of the monkeys. I call on Hanuman and on the mighty hero, and swear by Mahavira that this pain in the arm cannot stay.

Verse 27, ghanakshari

Simhika sanhari bal surasa sudhari chhal lankini pachhari mari batika ujari hai, Lank parajari makari bidari bar bar jatudhan dhari dhuri dhani kari dari hai, Tori jamakatari mandodari karhori ani ravan ki rani meghanad mahatari hai, Bhir banh pir ki nipat rakhi mahabir kaun ke sakoch tulasi ke soch bhari hai

MeaningYou put down Simhika's strength, set right Surasa's trick, struck Lankini and wrecked the garden. You burned Lanka, tore apart the sea monster, and again and again turned the demon hosts to dust. You broke through the veil of Death and brought Mandodari, Ravana's queen and Meghanada's mother, out of the palace. Great hero, out of consideration for whom have you left only the fear of my arm pain alone? Tulsi is greatly worried.

Verse 28, ghanakshari

Teri balakeli bir suni sahamat dhir bhulat sarir sudhi sakr rabi rahu ki, Teri banh basat bisok lok pal sab tero nam let rahe arati n kahu ki, Sam dan bhed bidhi bedahu labed sidhi hath kapinath hi ke choti chor sahu ki, Alas anakh parihas kai sikhavan hai ete din rahi pir tulasi ke bahu ki

MeaningHearing of your childhood play, even the steady grow afraid, and Indra, the Sun and Rahu lose awareness of their bodies. Because of your arm the guardians of the world live free of sorrow, and when your name is spoken no one's trouble remains. By conciliation, gift, division and punishment, and by the Veda and its branches, it is established that the topknot of thief and honest man alike is in the hand of the lord of the monkeys. If this arm pain has stayed with Tulsi all these days, is it your laziness, anger, a joke or a lesson?

Verse 29, ghanakshari

Tukani ko ghar ghar dolat kangal boli bal jyom kripal nat pal pali poso hai, Kinhi hai sanbhar sar anjani kumar bir apano bisari haim n merehu bharoso hai, Itano parekho sab bhanti samarath aju kapiraj sanchi kahaum ko tilok toso hai, Sasati sahat das kije pekhi parihas chiri ko maran khel balakani koso hai

MeaningMerciful one, protector of the poor, I used to wander from house to house for scraps, penniless, and you took me in and raised me like a child. Son of Anjani, you have cared for me, and I trust that you will not forget me. Today, lord of the monkeys, you are able in every way. Tell me truly, who in the three worlds equals you? My one complaint is that your servant suffers, like a sparrow that dies in children's play, while you watch the game.

Verse 30, ghanakshari

Apane hi pap tem tritapatem ki sap tem barhi hai banh bedan kahi n sahi jati hai, Aushadh anek jantr mantr totakadi kiye badi bhaye devata manaye adhikati hai, Karatar bharatar haratar karm kal ko hai jagajal jo n manat itati hai, Chero tero tulasi tu mero kahyo ram dut dhil teri bir mohi pir tem pirati hai

MeaningThe pain in my arm has risen from my own sins, or from the three kinds of torment, or from a curse, and it can neither be spoken of nor borne. I tried many medicines, charms and remedies and appealed to the gods, but it was all in vain and the pain grows. Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, karma, time and the whole web of the world: who does not obey your word? Messenger of Rama, Tulsi is your servant and you have called him yours. Hero, your delay hurts me even more than the pain.

Verse 31, ghanakshari

MeaningYou are Rama's messenger, the worthy son of the Wind, strong of hand and foot and a helper of the helpless. Your glorious fame is known, the Vedas sing it, and Ravana, a warrior who had conquered the three worlds, fell to the blow of your fist. With so great and capable a master's kindness today, your good servant is suffering in body, mind and speech. Tulsi feels great shame over this small arm pain. Through what sin or anger of mine has your visible power gone into hiding?

Verse 32, ghanakshari

Devi dev danuj manuj muni siddh nag chhote bare jiv jete chetan achet haim, Putana pisachi jatudhani jatudhan bam ram dut ki rajai mathe mani let haim, Ghor jantr mantr kut kapat kurog jog hanuman an suni chharat niket haim, Krodh kije karm ko prabodh kije tulasi ko sodh kije tinako jo dosh dukh det haim

MeaningBeings great and small, living and not, gods, demons, humans, sages, perfected beings and serpents, as well as Putana, ghouls and demons, accept the command of Rama's messenger on their heads. Terrible charms, tricks, deceit and bad illnesses leave their dwellings when they hear Hanuman's call. Be angry with my bad deeds, teach Tulsi, and correct whatever faults give us trouble.

Verse 33, ghanakshari

Tere bal banar jitaye ran ravan som tere ghale jatudhan bhaye ghar ghar ke, Tere bal ram raj kiye sab sur kaj sakal samaj saj saje raghubar ke, Tero gunagan suni giraban pulakat sajal bilochan biranchi harihar ke, Tulasi ke mathe par hath phero kis nath dekhiye n das dukhi tose kanigar ke

MeaningBy your strength the monkeys won against Ravana, and by your blows the demons were scattered house by house. By your strength King Rama completed all the gods' work, and you set up all the arrangements of Rama's company. Hearing your praise the gods thrill, and Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva's eyes fill with tears. Lord of the monkeys, place your hand on Tulsi's head. The servants of a master as mindful of his honour as you have never been seen unhappy.

Verse 34, ghanakshari

Palo tere tuk ko parehu chuk mukiye n kur kauri duko hom apani or heriye, Bhoranath bhore hi sarosh hot thore dosh poshi toshi thapi apano n ab deriye, Ambu tu haum ambuchar amb tu haum dimbh so n bujhiye bilamb avalamb mere teriye, Balak bikal jani pahi prem pahichani tulasi ki banh par lami lum pheriye

MeaningI was raised on your scraps, so do not turn silent even if I slip. I am a base fellow worth two cowries, but look to your own nature. Simple lord, in your simplicity you grow angry over small faults. Be pleased, nurture me, settle me, and do not neglect me. If you are water, I am the fish, and if you are my mother, I am the small child, so do not delay, for you are my only support. Seeing the child distressed, recognise his love and protect him. Pass your long tail over Tulsi's arm.

Verse 35, ghanakshari

Gheri liyo rogani kujogani kulogani jyom basar jalad ghan ghata dhuki dhai hai, Barasat bari pir jariye javase jas rosh binu dosh dhum mul malinai hai, Karunanidhan hanuman maha balavan heri hansi hanki phunki phaujaim taim urai hai, Khaye huto tulasi kurog rarh rakasani kesari kisor rakhe bir bariai hai

MeaningIllnesses, bad configurations and bad people have surrounded me, like dense monsoon clouds rushing across the daytime sky. They rain pain and, without any fault of mine, have withered my good name as the jawasa shrub withers when the rain falls, with smoke and soot over it. Merciful and mighty Hanuman, look with a smile, call out, and scatter these forces with a puff of breath, as you did before. Tulsi had been swallowed by the demon of a bad illness, and you, son of Kesari, protected me by force.

Verse 36, savaiya (mattagayand)

Ram gulam tuhi hanuman gosaim susaim sada anukulo, Palyo hom bal jyom akhar du pitu matu som mangal mod samulo, Banh ki bedan banh pagar pukarat arat anand bhulo, Shri raghubir nivariye pir rahaum darabar paro lati lulo

MeaningHanuman, you are my own lord and master, always kind to Rama's servants. I have been raised like a child by the two syllables of Rama's name, the root of joy and good fortune, who are like my father and mother. Forgetting all joy, I call out in pain from my arm, O strong support of arms. Raghubir, remove my pain so that, though feeble and lame, I may stay at your court.

Verse 37, ghanakshari

Kal ki karalata karam kathinai kidhom pap ke prabhav ki subhay bay bavare, Bedan kubhanti so sahi n jati rati din soi banh gahi jo gahi samir davare, Layo taru tulasi tiharo so nihari bari sinchiye malin bho tayo hai tihun tavare, Bhutani ki apani paraye ki kripa nidhan janiyat sabahi ki riti ram ravare

MeaningWhether this is the harshness of time and the hardness of karma, or the working of sin, or an unruly wind, the pain cannot be borne by day or night. You are the one who took hold of this arm of mine, the poet says, and you planted this Tulsi shrub. Look at it and water it, for it has withered under three kinds of heat. Merciful one, the ways of spirits, my own and others, and everyone's ways are known to you, lord of Rama's servants.

Verse 38, ghanakshari

Pany pir pet pir banh pir munh pir jar jar sakal pir mai hai, Dev bhut pitar karam khal kal grah mohi par davari damanak si dai hai, Hom to binamol ke bikano bali bare hitem ot ram nam ki lalat likhi lai hai, Kumbhaj ke kinkar bikal bure gokhurani hay ram ray aisi hal kahun bhai hai

MeaningThere is pain in my feet, belly, arm and face, and the whole body is worn out and full of pain. Gods, ghosts, ancestors, karma, time and the bad planets rush at me together, as if in cannon fire. I have been sold into your hands without price from childhood, and I have written Rama's name as the support on my forehead. Alas, lord Rama, has it ever happened that the servant of Agastya drowned in a cow's hoofprint?

Verse 39, ghanakshari

Bahuk subahu nich lichar marich mili munh pir ketuja kurog jatudhan haim, Ram nam jap jag kiyo chahom sanurag kal kaise dut bhut kaha mere man haim, Sumire sahay ram lakhan akhar dou jinake samuh sake jagat jahan haim, Tulasi sanbhari taraka sanhari bhari bhat bedhe baragad se banai banavan haim

MeaningThe pain in my arm is like the wicked Subahu, the weakness of my body is like Maricha, and the pain in my face is like Tataka. Other bad illnesses, like demons, have joined them. I want to perform the sacrifice of repeating Rama's name with love, but these death-like ghosts are not within my control. The two syllables of Rama's name, whose fame in the world is great, will help me when I remember them. Tulsi, remember the great warrior who killed Tataka: he will pierce them with arrows as if boring holes in banyan fruit.

Verse 40, ghanakshari

Balapane sudhe man ram sanamukh bhayo ram nam let mangi khat tuk tak hom, Parayo lok riti mem punit priti ram ray moh bas baitho tori taraki tarak haum, Khote khote acharan acharat apanayo anjani kumar sodhyo ramapani pak haum, Tulasi gosaim bhayo bhonde din bhuli gayo tako phal pavat nidan paripak haum

MeaningFrom childhood, with a simple mind, I turned towards Rama and lived on scraps, saying Rama's name. Then, caught up in worldly ways and in ignorance, I broke my pure love for Rama and plunged into the world. While I was doing bad deeds, Anjani's son took me in and had me set right by Rama's holy hand. Tulsi became a respected master (gosain) and forgot the old bad days, and now he is meeting the full ripening of it.

Verse 41, ghanakshari

Asan basan hin bisham bishad lin dekhi din dubaro karai n hay hay ko, Tulasi anath so sanath raghunath kiyo diyo phal sil sindhu apane subhay ko, Nich yahi bich pati pai bharuhai go bihai prabhu bhajan bachan man kay ko, Ta tem tanu peshiyat ghor barator mis phuti phuti nikasat lon ram ray ko

MeaningWithout food or clothes, sunk in deep gloom, thin and poor, who would not have said alas on seeing me? Raghunatha, the ocean of mercy, made this helpless Tulsi his own and gave him the fruit of his own gentle nature. Meanwhile this low fellow, puffed up with standing, left the worship of Rama in body, mind and speech. So, under the guise of a terrible boil, Rama's salt that I ate seems to burst out of the body in pieces.

Verse 42, ghanakshari

Jio jag janakijivan ko kahai jan maribe ko baranasi bari surasari ko, Tulasi ke duhun hath modak haim aise thaun jake jiye muye soch karihaim n lari ko, Moko jhutho sancho log ram ko kahat sab mere man man hai n har ko n hari ko, Bhari pir dusah sarir tem bihal hot sou raghubir binu sake dur kari ko

MeaningTo live in the world as a servant of Rama, the life of Janaki, and to die at Kashi on the bank of the Ganga: in such a place Tulsi holds sweets in both hands, for his living or his dying will worry no one, not even his children. Everyone calls me, truly or falsely, Rama's servant, and I am proud in my heart that I am neither Shiva's nor Hari's, but Rama's alone. Heavy pain troubles my body, and who but Raghubir can remove it?

Verse 43, ghanakshari

Sitapati saheb sahay hanuman nit hit upades ko mahes mano guru kai, Manas bachan kay saran tihare pany tumhare bharose sur maim n jane sur kai, Byadhi bhut janit upadhi kahu khal ki samadhi ki je tulasi ko jani jan phur kai, Kapinath raghunath bholanath bhutanath rog sindhu kyom n dariyat gay khur kai

MeaningHanuman, the lord of Sita is always your helper, and Mahesh is like a teacher giving good counsel. In body, mind and speech I am at your feet, and relying on you I did not count other gods as gods. Remove the pain that comes from disease, from spirits or from the mischief of some wicked person, and treat Tulsi as your true servant. Lord of the monkeys, lord of the Raghus, simple lord, lord of spirits, why not make this sea of illness a cow's hoofprint?

Verse 44, ghanakshari

Kahom hanuman som sujan ram ray som kripanidhan sankar som savadhan suniye, Harash vishad rag rosh gun dosh mai birachi biranchi sab dekhiyat duniye, Maya jiv kal ke karam ke subhay ke karaiya ram bed kahem sanchi man guniye, Tumh tem kaha n hoy ha ha so bujhaiye mohim hom hun rahom maunahi bayo so jani luniye

MeaningI say to Hanuman, to wise King Rama and to merciful Shankara: hear with attention. The Creator has made the whole world a mixture of joy and grief, desire and anger, merit and fault. The Vedas say that Rama is the doer behind illusion, the soul, time, action and nature, and I hold this true in my mind. I submit to you: make me understand what is beyond your power. Then I too will stay quiet, knowing that one reaps what one has sown.

How the text on this page is sourced

Hindi and Sanskrit Wikisource carry the Kavitavali of Tulsidas but no page for the Hanuman Bahuk, so this text was settled from printed editions and checked against more than one witness. The base is the Gita Press, Gorakhpur edition of the Hanuman Bahuk with a Hindi commentary by Mahavir Prasad Malaviya Vaidya ‘Veer’, whose preface is dated Samvat 1990 (1933). It is on the Internet Archive as HanumanBahukGitapress, and two further scans of the same text are hanuman-bahuk-by-goswami-tulsidas and hanuman-bahuk-gita-press-upayogi-books. It was set against four other witnesses:

  • Tulasi Granthavali, volume 2 (second edition), edited by Ramchandra Shukla, Nagari Pracharini Sabha, Kashi. This is the scholarly edition of the poet’s works, and it prints the Bahuk with the Kavitavali. Scan: in.ernet.dli.2015.350117, from the Digital Library of India (the scan gives no year).
  • Hanuman Bahuk with the Piyush-varshini commentary by Anjaninandan Sharan, whose dedication is dated 24 October 1943, scan in.ernet.dli.2015.346148. It was used for its notes on variant readings.
  • A modern digital text on sanskritdocuments.org (hanumAnabAhuka).
  • A text printed in the magazine Shri Raghava Seva, scan hanumanbahuk_text.

The scans are machine-read (OCR) and noisy, so they were used to confirm and to decide between readings and not as the only witness. The digital texts and the scans were aligned word by word with a script. Every word printed here is found in at least two of the five witnesses, with one exception, the word bajratan in verse 2, where the scans are too damaged to read but the sense and the other witnesses agree. Where the editions differ only in spelling, such as a nasal mark, b against v, or a long against a short vowel, this page keeps the spelling of the Gita Press print where its scan is legible and the digital text elsewhere. Your own copy may spell some words differently, and that is normal.

Notable differences between the editions:

  • Verse 3. The Nagari Pracharini Sabha edition reads din-dukh-daman ko kaun tulasis hai where the Gita Press print and the digital texts read duvan-dal-daman ko kaun tulasis hai. This page follows the Gita Press reading.
  • Verse 16. The Nagari Pracharini Sabha edition begins sujan siromani ho, and the other texts begin jan siromani hau.
  • Verses 7, 12, 28, 35 and 38. Small differences of wording appear, such as gadain and gade in verse 7, hai and hvai in verse 12, teri and tero in verse 28 and bin mol ke and bin mol hi in verse 38. This page follows the reading found in at least two of the editions.
  • Order of the late verses. The Shri Raghava Seva text puts several of the verses from number 34 onward in a different order. The order here is that of the Gita Press print, the Nagari Pracharini Sabha edition and the digital text, so a verse number on this page may not match that printing.

How the poem is traditionally read

Many devotees read the Hanuman Bahuk on Tuesdays and Saturdays, the days most associated with Hanuman, and on Hanuman Jayanti. Because the poem is a plea in a time of bodily or mental trouble, some read it in difficult periods, and some families recite a chosen number of verses a day. These are customs of families and teachers, and the text itself lays down no rule of time, count or ritual. If you read it, a quiet place, a lamp before a picture of Hanuman or Rama and an unhurried pace are enough.

The poem asks for relief, but it makes no promise of results, and this page makes none either. Verse 44 ends the plea with a note of acceptance: the poet will stay quiet, knowing that one reaps what one has sown. Many readers find that the honest tone of the later verses is part of why the poem is loved.

Pronunciation notes

The verses are in Awadhi, so some forms (tihaaro, raawaro, haank) differ from modern Hindi. The transliteration drops a final short a as Hindi speech does, so baahu is said “baa-hu”. The breathy consonants bh, dh, kh, gh and th carry a puff of air. The nasal marks at the end of a word are a soft hum through the nose. The long lines are meant to be read in one breath-group of eight to sixteen beats, so slow down at the pauses and listen to a recitation you trust before you try to match its pace.

Frequently asked questions

↳ What does Hanuman Bahuk mean?

Bahuk comes from bahu, the arm. The poem is named for the pain in the arms that the poet describes in its later verses. The first verses praise Hanuman, and the rest are a plea to him.

↳ Who wrote the Hanuman Bahuk?

It is credited to Tulsidas, and the scholarly edition of his works from the Nagari Pracharini Sabha prints it with the Kavitavali. The poem gives no date, and accounts of his life differ in detail, so the sixteenth century is the safest statement.

↳ How many verses does it have?

It has 44 verses in four metres: chhappay, jhulna, ghanakshari and savaiya. Some printings order the last verses differently, so a verse number can vary between books.

↳ Can the Hanuman Bahuk cure pain?

It is a prayer and a poem, not a medical treatment. Tradition says the poet found relief after composing it, but that is a tradition and not a record. Pain in the arms or joints needs a doctor, and reading the poem can sit beside that care and not replace it.

↳ When is it usually read?

Many devotees read it on Tuesdays and Saturdays, on Hanuman Jayanti, or in a hard time. The text sets no rule for the day or the number of readings, so follow your family or teacher.
