About this piece
This set is a squat brass mortar with a ringed outside and a long brass pestle. The pestle is longer than most, and the seller says this allows a different hand motion from a short one.
The mortar is about 8.25 cm across and 7 cm high. The seller says it can be used for grinding spices or for medicinal purposes. It suits a kitchen that wants a small mortar for whole spices, garlic or ginger.
How it is used
An okhli and its pestle are used to crush whole spices, pepper, garlic and similar things by hand. Place the mortar on a firm surface, add a small amount at a time and pound with the pestle.
Looking after it
- Wash with mild soap and a soft sponge, and avoid steel wool.
- Dry well to prevent watermarks.
