About this piece
A lamp in brass made in India, with two parrots whose necks curve outward over two small oil bowls. A small domed finial stands between them on a round base with four short feet.
It is 18 cm (7 inches) tall and weighs 710 g. Parrot motifs are common in South Indian temple art, and the lamp suits a puja shelf or a side table.
How it is used
Filled with oil or ghee and lit with a wick in each bowl, in the puja room or on a side table at festival times. Many homes keep a decorative brass lamp near the mandir.
Looking after it
- Wipe the brass with a soft dry cloth.
- Wash off old oil with warm soapy water and dry well.
