About this piece
An akhand diya is a lamp kept burning without a break, and this one is built for it. A brass oil bowl on a round base sits inside a clear glass cylinder, and a brass dome lid with star-shaped cut-outs and a dark knob closes the top.
The photos show the lamp both covered and uncovered. It stands 10 cm tall and weighs 220 g, so it fits on a small altar shelf.
How it is used
An akhand diya is traditionally lit and kept burning for a set period, for example through a long puja or a festival such as Navratri. The glass cover keeps the flame out of the draught, and the holes in the lid let air in.
Looking after it
- Let it cool before lifting the lid.
- Wipe the glass and brass with a soft dry cloth.
