About this piece
A seated Surya, the Sun god of the Hindu tradition, in copper. The photos show the figure with a crown and a radiating halo behind the head, sitting above a row of seven small horses on a stepped base, in a dark brown finish.
Surya is traditionally shown with a chariot drawn by seven horses. This piece is 10 cm tall and weighs 350 g, which fits a small altar or shelf.
How it is used
Surya is traditionally honoured at sunrise, and many homes keep his image on an east-facing altar or shelf. In Vedic astrology the Sun is Surya, and some people keep his idol for that reason.
