In shortTradition's remedies for the Sun begin with conduct: rising early, keeping your word and respecting your father and elders. After that come the Surya mantras at sunrise, Sunday charity and a simple Sunday fast, and last of all a ruby, which is optional and is usually discussed only after a full chart reading.

Surya, the Sun, is the planet of the self: purpose, confidence, vitality, the father, and dealings with authority. When a chart shows the Sun as weak (in Libra, close to Saturn, in a house of loss) or when its dasha is asking a lot, readers look for ways to steady this part of life. This page sets out what tradition suggests, in the order teachers usually give it, and says plainly where the practices differ. It is a guide to the tradition, not a promise of any outcome.

Start with conduct and service

The Sun’s remedies are mostly about how a person carries themselves. Teachers commonly name a short list.

  • Rise near sunrise. The simplest solar habit, and the one that costs nothing. A few minutes facing the morning light before the phone is picked up counts for more than a long ritual done in a rush.
  • Keep your word. The Sun is the planet of the king, and the old image is of a person whose promises can be relied on. Small commitments kept are the practice.
  • Respect your father and elders. Where the father is living, time and attention; where he is not, a quiet remembrance on Sundays. Where the relationship is difficult, the tradition does not ask for pretence, only for courtesy.
  • Take responsibility without needing credit. The weak Sun often shows as either hunger for recognition or fear of being seen. Doing your work in the open and letting the result stand is the remedy in everyday form.
  • Serve through your skills. Teaching, advising and leading a small group are all solar acts. Offer them where they are wanted.

Mantra and devotion

The Sun is worshipped as Surya, and the site has several texts you can read with the Sanskrit, transliteration and meaning.

The beej (seed syllable) mantras for the planets vary between traditions and are not yet published here, so we do not give a count or a syllable string. Many people chant the simple “Om Suryaya Namah” instead. Choose one text, say it at the same hour, and keep the number small enough to continue. There is no single correct count.

Charity and the Sunday fast, as tradition describes them

Sunday is the Sun’s weekday. The usual forms of the practice are:

  • Charity on Sunday. Lists differ by region and family. Wheat, jaggery, copper vessels, red cloth and sweets are the items most often named. Giving food to someone who needs it, or a modest sum to a cause you respect, follows the same spirit.
  • A Sunday fast. Many keep it from sunrise until sunset, breaking it with a simple meal before dark. Some eat once without salt, and others take only fruit. If you are unwell, pregnant, elderly or take regular medication, do not fast, and talk to your doctor. A day of quiet and a lighter meal is an accepted substitute.
  • Water to the Sun. Offering water at sunrise, facing east, is common in many homes.

None of these is compulsory, and the tradition itself says that giving without display matters more than the amount.

Check what the Sun is doing in your own chart first

A remedy for the Sun makes more sense once you know why you are choosing it. The Sun is a natural malefic in classical lists, but that describes its heat and not misfortune. Read where it sits in your chart: the Sun in all twelve houses and the Sun in each sign guides explain the placements, and the Sun Mahadasha guide covers the six-year period. A strong, well-placed Sun gains little from extra remedies, and a weak Sun is usually helped most by the conduct list above.

The gemstone, last

The stone of the Sun is the ruby (manikya). Gems are a recognised classical remedy, discussed in the old gem chapters, though choosing a stone from house lordship is a later practice and teachers differ about it. It is the last step because it is the costliest and the most dependent on the chart: an astrologer would look at the Sun’s sign, house, strength and dasha, and the ascendant, before saying anything. Many readers decide against a stone and are well served by the habits above.

If you want to read more, the ruby guide covers who considers it, how it is traditionally worn, treatments and how to check a laboratory report, and the gemstones hub sets out all nine. We sell nothing but the reading, so no stone is being offered to you here. If a seller tells you that your Sun is in danger unless you buy a ruby today, treat that as a reason to step back.

Frequently asked questions

↳ What is the best remedy for a weak Sun?

Tradition puts conduct first: rising early, keeping your word and respecting your father and elders. The Surya mantras and Sunday charity come next, and a ruby is a last and optional step. No remedy is described as certain to change an outcome.

↳ Which mantra is used for the Sun?

Many families use the Surya mantra from the Rigveda, the Aditya Hridayam or the Gayatri mantra, said at sunrise. Others use the short name mantra Om Suryaya Namah. Texts and counts differ by family, so follow what you were taught.

↳ Is the Sunday fast necessary?

No. It is a traditional practice, and tradition itself says it should not harm health. If you are unwell, pregnant, elderly or on medication, skip it and speak to your doctor. A quiet day and a lighter meal is an accepted alternative.

↳ Should everyone with a weak Sun wear a ruby?

No. A ruby is usually discussed only after a whole chart has been read, and many astrologers advise against it in some charts. It is an optional classical remedy and never a requirement.

↳ Do Sun remedies help with a difficult father?

The tradition links the Sun with the father and suggests respect and remembrance, but it does not ask anyone to endure harm. Practical steps such as counselling or distance are legitimate where a relationship is unsafe, and a remedy is not a replacement for them.
