Shukra, Venus, is the planet of love and partnership, art and music, comfort, taste and the enjoyment of life. When Venus is weak, sits in a house of loss, or is joined with Saturn or a node, readers often describe strained closeness, dullness in pleasure, or an uneasy relationship with money and comfort. The tradition has a set of remedies for this, and this page gives them in the usual order. It is a guide to tradition and does not promise love, marriage or wealth.
Start with conduct and service
Venus rewards refinement and fidelity, and the first remedies are behaviours.
- Be faithful and plain-spoken in love. Honesty with a partner, and courtesy to the partner’s family, is the foremost Venus remedy in most teachers’ lists. Where a relationship is troubled, the tradition does not ask a person to stay in harm.
- Respect women. Mothers, wives, daughters, colleagues and the women who work in your home. Many lists name this explicitly.
- Keep your home clean and pleasant. Fresh flowers, a tidy room, clean clothes and a little fragrance. Venus is a planet of surroundings.
- Make or enjoy something beautiful. Music, drawing, cooking, dance or gardening. An hour of art a week is a Venus habit.
- Spend with grace. The planet of luxury is steadied by a modest budget for pleasure and by not overspending to impress.
- Treat your food and body kindly. Eating at regular times and keeping up your personal care is part of what Venus asks. This is not medical advice.
Mantra and devotion
Venus is linked with Lakshmi, the goddess of fortune and grace, and with the goddess in her wider forms. The site has several hymns.
- Shri Suktam: the Vedic hymn to Lakshmi.
- Mahalakshmi Ashtakam: eight verses to Mahalakshmi.
- Kanakadhara Stotram: the hymn tradition attributes to Adi Shankara, asking for Lakshmi’s kind glance.
- Lalita Sahasranama: the thousand names of the Devi.
- Lakshmi aarti: the evening aarti.
- Navagraha mantras: the verse to Shukra calls him the teacher of the daityas and expounder of all the shastras.
Beej mantras differ between traditions and are not yet published on the site. Choose a hymn that you can read with ease and keep to a regular time, such as Friday evening. Short and regular is better than long and rare.
Charity and the Friday fast, as tradition describes them
Friday (Shukravar) is Venus’s day, and in many homes also Lakshmi’s.
- Charity on Friday. Lists differ by region. Rice, sugar, white or cream cloth, ghee, curd and sweets are the usual gifts. A meal for a woman or a family in need follows the same spirit.
- A Friday fast. Where kept, it is generally a light day with a prayer to Lakshmi or Santoshi Mata, and a sweet meal in the evening. If you are unwell, pregnant, elderly, diabetic or on medicines, do not fast, and speak to your doctor first. A prayer and a lighter meal is an accepted alternative.
- A lamp at the evening prayer. Common in many homes on Fridays.
See Diwali Lakshmi puja for the year’s great day for Lakshmi. None of this is compulsory.
Read your own Venus before choosing a remedy
Venus is strong in Taurus and Libra, its own signs, and in Pisces, where it is exalted, and it is weak in Virgo. Read the Venus in all twelve houses and Venus in each sign guides, and the Venus Mahadasha guide for the twenty-year period, the longest in the cycle. Pairings change the reading, so see Venus and Saturn or Venus and Rahu if they apply.
The gemstone, last
The stone of Venus is the diamond (heera). Gems are a recognised classical remedy, though choosing one from house lordship is a later practice and teachers differ about it. It is the last step because it is the most costly and depends on the whole chart: the sign, house, strength and dasha of Venus and the ascendant. Many people never use one. For those who want a lower-cost stone, the tradition lists substitutes, covered on the substitute stones page.
The diamond guide covers who considers it, treatments and laboratory reports, and the traditional way of wearing it, and the gemstones hub covers the others. We sell nothing but the reading, so none of these stones is for sale on this site.
Frequently asked questions
↳ What is the best remedy for a weak Venus?
Tradition starts with faithful, courteous conduct in relationships, respect for women and a pleasant, clean home. Lakshmi mantras, Friday charity and the Friday fast follow, and a diamond is last and optional.
↳ Which mantra is used for Venus?
Many people say the Shri Suktam, the Mahalakshmi Ashtakam or the Kanakadhara Stotram on Fridays, or use the verse to Shukra in the Navagraha Stotra. The short mantras differ between families, so follow what you were taught.
↳ Can Venus remedies help with marriage or relationships?
The tradition links Venus with partnership and offers conduct and devotion as its remedies, but it makes no promise about marriage or love. For difficulties in a relationship, speaking with a counsellor is a practical step that sits well alongside it.
↳ Is the Friday fast necessary?
No. It is a traditional practice and not a duty. If you are unwell, pregnant, elderly or on medication, speak to your doctor. A prayer and a lighter meal is an accepted alternative.
↳ Should I wear a diamond for Venus?
Only after a full chart has been read, and only if you wish to. Many astrologers say it is not needed, and the tradition lists lower-cost substitutes for those who want one. It is never a requirement.
