Shani, Saturn, is the planet of time, discipline, labour, duty and consequence, and the one most people have a worry about. The texts picture him as a slow and just teacher, not a punisher, and that gap between reputation and text is worth keeping in mind. Readers reach for Saturn remedies during Sade Sati, a Saturn dasha, or a chart where Saturn is weak or hard on the Moon. This page gives what tradition suggests in the usual order. No remedy is a guarantee, and Saturn’s periods are not something to dread.
Start with conduct and service
Saturn’s remedies are the clearest case of conduct coming before ritual. Teachers across schools repeat the same few things.
- Do your work honestly and on time. Saturn rewards steady effort and punctuality, and is said to dislike shortcuts. Finish what is begun.
- Be fair and kind to those who work for you. Domestic staff, drivers, labourers, juniors. Paying promptly and treating people with respect is the most commonly named Saturn remedy of all.
- Look after the elderly. Parents, grandparents or neighbours who live alone. Time, a meal or a lift to a clinic counts.
- Keep your promises about money and time. Saturn is the planet of obligation.
- Accept slowness. A good deal of the benefit is in learning not to rush. A walk, a fixed bedtime and a small daily routine suit this planet.
- Look after your own body and rest. Saturn is tied to bones and fatigue in tradition. This is not medical advice, and anything persistent belongs with a doctor.
Mantra and devotion
Shani is worshipped in his own right, and on Saturdays many also turn to Hanuman, who in a well-known story is said to be one whom Saturn leaves alone, and to Shiva, of whom Saturn is described as a devotee. The site has several texts.
- Dasharatha Shani Stotra: nine verses to Shani, found in the Padma Purana, which are read on Saturdays.
- Hanuman Chalisa: the most widely recited Saturday text.
- Hanuman Ashtak and Hanuman Bahuk.
- Shivashtakam and Sri Rudram: Shiva texts.
- Navagraha mantras: the verse to Shani calls him dark like blue collyrium and the son of the Sun, and the second set describes him as dear to Shiva and of steady conduct.
The planetary beej mantras differ between traditions and are not yet published here. Choose one text and keep it, rather than stacking several for a few weeks and dropping them.
Charity and the Saturday fast, as tradition describes them
Saturday (Shanivar) is Shani’s day.
- Charity on Saturday. Lists differ by region. Black sesame (til), black gram (urad), mustard oil, iron items and dark blue or black cloth are commonly named. Giving a meal or an umbrella or footwear to someone who works outdoors is a practical form of the same idea.
- A Saturday fast. Many eat one simple meal after sunset, and some avoid salt. If you are unwell, pregnant, elderly, diabetic or on medicines, do not fast, and consult your doctor. A lighter meal with a prayer is an accepted alternative.
- A lamp of mustard or sesame oil. Lit at a Shani temple or under a peepal tree on Saturday evening, as local custom goes.
- Feeding crows, dogs or cows. A custom in many households, where it is practical.
The Shani puja Saturday vidhi describes the full worship and the katha, and is a calm place to begin. None of this is obligatory.
If it is Sade Sati
Sade Sati is the seven and a half year stretch when Saturn crosses the sign before the natal Moon, the Moon sign and the sign after it. Teachers read it as a long period of reckoning and growth, not a sentence, and many people do well in it. The Sade Sati calculator shows whether you are in it, and Sade Sati now explains who is affected at present. The Moon’s condition matters as much as Saturn’s, so read the Moon remedies page too. A related reading is the Shani Dhaiya calculator.
Read your own Saturn before choosing a remedy
Saturn is strong in Capricorn and Aquarius, its own signs, and in Libra, where it is exalted, and weak in Aries. For many ascendants Saturn is a functional benefic, and for the Taurus, Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants it can be a strong ally. Read the Saturn in all twelve houses and Saturn in each sign guides and the Saturn Mahadasha guide for the nineteen-year period. Pairings matter, for instance Saturn and Rahu.
The gemstone, last
The stone of Saturn is the blue sapphire (neelam). It is a classical remedy in the tradition and also the one that astrologers most often advise approaching carefully, with a trial period and a reading beforehand, because teachers hold it to be powerful and the response varies. That is a view among practitioners, not a prediction about any person. It is the last step, after a reading of Saturn’s sign, house, strength, the dasha and the ascendant, and many readers choose not to wear one and do well on service and discipline.
The blue sapphire guide covers who considers it, treatments and laboratory reports, and the traditional way of wearing it, and the gemstones hub covers the others. We sell nothing but the reading, and there is nothing to buy on this page. If a seller pushes a neelam on you quickly, step back and take a second opinion.
Frequently asked questions
↳ What is the best remedy for Saturn or Sade Sati?
Tradition starts with honest, punctual work and kindness to those who serve you and to the elderly. Shani and Hanuman devotion, Saturday charity and the Saturday fast follow, and a blue sapphire is last and optional. Sade Sati is read as a period of reckoning and growth and not as a punishment.
↳ Which mantra is used for Saturn?
Many people read the Dasharatha Shani Stotra or the Hanuman Chalisa on Saturdays, or use the verse to Shani in the Navagraha Stotra. Short name mantras differ between families, so follow what you were taught.
↳ Is a blue sapphire necessary during Sade Sati?
No. Many astrologers advise against rushing into it and suggest a full reading first. Many people go through Sade Sati with conduct, mantra and routine alone, and the stone is never a requirement.
↳ Why oil and sesame on Saturdays?
They are traditional offerings to Shani, linked in the stories with his dark colour and with humble labour. Customs differ by region, and the offering matters less in the tradition than the spirit of service behind it.
↳ Should I fast on Saturdays?
It is a custom and not a duty. If you are unwell, pregnant, elderly or on medication, please speak to your doctor, and keep to a lighter meal with a prayer instead.
