About this piece
A deep cooking pot in brass with a hammered outside. The inside is lined with tin, known as kalai, and a fitted brass lid with a raised knob sits on top. Two ring handles are on the sides.
It holds 4 litres and weighs about 2.12 kg. The seller suggests it for biryani, curries, dal and stews on a gas stove. The photos show it in a gift box, set on a table with food and on a plain ground. It suits someone who wants a traditional brass cooking pot.
How it is used
A degchi is used for slow dishes such as biryani, dal and curries. The seller says to add a little ghee or oil before heating, begin on low to medium heat and avoid long empty preheating.
Looking after it
- Use a wooden or silicone spatula to protect the tin lining.
- Let it cool before washing and dry it well.
- Avoid sharp or abrasive utensils.
