How the finder works
The finder searches every name listed on this site’s baby names pages: 621 boy names and 540 girl names, each with its meaning. You can type a first letter or syllable, choose boy or girl, pick a nakshatra or a rashi, and add a word from the meaning, such as river or moon. Leave a box empty to ignore it. The results are sorted alphabetically.
What the filters mean
The nakshatra filter shows names whose first sound is one of the four syllables of that nakshatra, so choosing Rohini gives names that begin with O, Va, Vi or Vu. The rashi filter uses the first-letter chart that the name rashi calculator uses, and the names by rashi pages explain it. The first letter or syllable box matches the start of the name, or an exact syllable such as Chu or Bha.
Names are listed only where they are in real use in India with a standard meaning. A name with no nakshatra syllable, such as most names that begin with B, still appears in the results with a note, and it will not show up when you filter by nakshatra.
Browse instead of search
The same names are arranged on the baby names hub by nakshatra, on the letters index from A to Z, and on the rashi pages by sign. To find a baby’s nakshatra and pada first, use the free nakshatra calculator.
Frequently asked questions
↳ Does the finder need my email?
The first time you use it, it asks for an email address and sends a six-digit code, the same free check as the other tools on the site. After that it runs without asking again on the same device.
↳ Where do the names come from?
They are the names on this site's baby names pages, one list for the nakshatra pages, the letter pages and the rashi pages. Each name has a standard meaning from Sanskrit, Hindi or regional tradition.
↳ Why does a name appear with no nakshatra syllable?
Because its first sound is not one of the 108 naming syllables. A family that follows the Moon's pada would choose another first sound, while a family that does not can still use the name.
↳ Can I search by a word in the meaning?
Yes. Type a word such as light, river or victory in the meaning box and the finder shows names whose meaning contains that word. It matches whole or partial words and ignores capital letters.
