Few yoga names sound as grand as this one. Akhanda means unbroken or undivided, and samrajya means a sovereign empire, so Akhanda Samrajya Yoga is literally the yoga of an empire that is not split or lost. In the old texts, a ruler with this yoga holds a kingdom whole, without rebellion or division.
Because of the name, it turns up constantly in online lists and in automatic reports, often attached to charts that do not really meet any version of the rule. This article sets out what the rule is, why only four ascendants can ever form it, what it would realistically mean in a modern life, and why the free tool does not test it, so that you can check it by hand.
How Akhanda Samrajya Yoga forms
The yoga is built around Jupiter, the planet of wisdom, wealth and expansion, and around the houses of wealth and fortune. Sources state it in slightly different ways, so it helps to separate the pieces that most of them share from the parts that vary.
The shared core: Jupiter rules a wealth house. Jupiter must be the lord of the 2nd house (accumulated wealth and speech), the 5th house (merit, intelligence and creativity) or the 11th house (gains and income).
The commonly quoted second condition. The form I have seen repeated most often adds that the lord of the 9th house, the house of fortune, is strongly placed in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th). Some versions extend this to the lords of the 2nd or 11th as well. I have not been able to check the original verse, and the wording genuinely differs between writers, so treat this as the widely repeated form and not as a settled quotation.
What the free tool does. The free kundali tool does not test this yoga. An earlier check asked that Jupiter itself sit in a kendra in its own sign (Sagittarius or Pisces) or its exaltation sign (Cancer) while also ruling a wealth house, and as the next section shows, that combination cannot occur, so the check was removed. Use the checklist below to test the yoga by hand.
The Sanskrit name gives the idea in two words: akhanda, undivided, and samrajya, sovereign rule.
As a checklist for the commonly quoted form:
- Find which houses Jupiter rules for your ascendant. Is at least one the 2nd, 5th or 11th?
- Identify the lord of the 9th house.
- Check whether that planet sits in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house.
- Note how strong Jupiter and the 9th lord are.
Which ascendants can have Jupiter rule the 2nd, 5th or 11th
Jupiter rules two signs, Sagittarius and Pisces. Counting from each ascendant:
- Aries: Sagittarius is the 9th and Pisces the 12th. No wealth-house rulership.
- Taurus: Sagittarius is the 8th and Pisces the 11th. Jupiter rules the 11th.
- Gemini: Sagittarius is the 7th and Pisces the 10th. No.
- Cancer: Sagittarius is the 6th and Pisces the 9th. No.
- Leo: Sagittarius is the 5th and Pisces the 8th. Jupiter rules the 5th.
- Virgo: Sagittarius is the 4th and Pisces the 7th. No.
- Libra: Sagittarius is the 3rd and Pisces the 6th. No.
- Scorpio: Sagittarius is the 2nd and Pisces the 5th. Jupiter rules both the 2nd and the 5th.
- Sagittarius: Sagittarius is the 1st and Pisces the 4th. No.
- Capricorn: Sagittarius is the 12th and Pisces the 3rd. No.
- Aquarius: Sagittarius is the 11th and Pisces the 2nd. Jupiter rules both the 2nd and the 11th.
- Pisces: Pisces is the 1st and Sagittarius the 10th. No.
So Jupiter rules a wealth house only for Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius ascendants. For the other eight, no version of the yoga built on this rule can apply.
Who the 9th lord is in those four cases
- Taurus ascendant: the 9th house is Capricorn, so the 9th lord is Saturn.
- Leo ascendant: the 9th house is Aries, so the 9th lord is Mars.
- Scorpio ascendant: the 9th house is Cancer, so the 9th lord is the Moon.
- Aquarius ascendant: the 9th house is Libra, so the 9th lord is Venus.
For the commonly quoted form, the yoga needs that planet strongly placed in a kendra. Saturn for Taurus is also the 10th lord, which makes it the classical yogakaraka (a single planet ruling both a kendra and a trikona), so a strong Saturn in a kendra there is a powerful arrangement in its own right.
A worked example
Take a Taurus ascendant. Jupiter rules the 11th, so the first condition is met. The 9th lord is Saturn. Suppose Saturn sits in Aquarius, which is the 10th house from Taurus, a kendra, and also Saturn’s own sign. The second condition is met and strongly. What remains is to judge Jupiter: for Taurus it also rules the 8th, so it brings gains (11th) together with the demands of the 8th house, and its placement and dignity will say whether the gains arrive smoothly. The yoga is present by the commonly quoted form, and its quality depends on those details.
Why the old tool check was removed
Now apply the earlier tool check, Jupiter in a kendra in its own or exalted sign, to the four ascendants where Jupiter rules a wealth house.
- For Taurus the kendras are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. Jupiter’s strong signs are Cancer, Sagittarius and Pisces, which are the 3rd, 8th and 11th houses. None is a kendra.
- For Leo the kendras are Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius and Taurus. Jupiter’s strong signs are the 12th, 5th and 8th houses. None is a kendra.
- For Scorpio the kendras are Scorpio, Aquarius, Taurus and Leo. Jupiter’s strong signs are the 9th, 2nd and 5th houses. None is a kendra.
- For Aquarius the kendras are Aquarius, Taurus, Leo and Scorpio. Jupiter’s strong signs are the 6th, 11th and 2nd houses. None is a kendra.
So the two conditions in that rule are mutually exclusive. Jupiter can rule a wealth house, or it can sit strong in a kendra, but for the same ascendant it cannot do both. This is arithmetic, and it meant that the check could not return a positive result for any chart, so it was taken out of the tool. If a chart seems to meet the commonly quoted form, the tool will not list it, because it does not test this yoga at all.
What the classical texts say
The yoga belongs to the classical family of royal and wealth combinations, and Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and the later compendia are the usual references. I cannot confirm the exact verse and I would rather say so than give a false citation. What is reliable is the general character of the description: a yoga that gives firm, undisturbed authority, wealth that grows, and a position that others respect and do not contest.
The important point is that the texts differ on exact wording and that translations vary. A reader who wants the original should compare more than one edition and treat any single online definition as one reading and not the only one.
The tradition also treats the yoga as a statement of the chart’s ceiling and not its floor. A person with it is described as capable of holding a large responsibility steadily. It does not remove the need for action, and it is not a guarantee of any specific title.
What it gives in a life
As tendencies, not promises.
Authority and leadership. The Jupiter emphasis suggests authority that comes from wisdom and fairness and not from force. This fits roles of advisory or institutional leadership: senior management, law, education, finance, administration, the clergy, or leading a family business.
Wealth. Jupiter ruling a wealth house points to resources that build steadily and are well managed. The specifics depend on the house. The 2nd lordship points to savings and family wealth, the 5th to gains through intelligence, investment or creativity, and the 11th to income and networks. The 9th lord’s strength adds fortune and good timing.
Stability. The word akhanda is the key. The yoga is described as giving an undivided foundation: a family, business or role that holds together without the splitting of assets or loyalties.
Character. The person is often seen as generous, fair and reliable, with a natural sense of what is proper. Jupiter’s dignity gives confidence without hardness.
Relationships. A strong Jupiter supports respected family life. The 7th house needs its own reading and should not be assumed from this yoga.
When it is strong and when it is weak
Jupiter’s condition. Jupiter in its own or exalted sign, unburnt, unafflicted and well placed, gives the strongest form. Jupiter combust, or close to Rahu or Ketu, is weaker.
The 9th lord. The commonly quoted form depends on this planet. Its dignity and house matter. Saturn in Aquarius or Libra, Mars in Aries or Capricorn, the Moon in Cancer or Taurus and Venus in Libra or Pisces are the strong versions for the four ascendants.
Which kendra. The 10th house ties the yoga to public authority and career. The 1st gives personal strength. The 4th gives property, home and inner security. The 7th gives partnership and public dealing.
The ascendant lord. A strong, well-placed ascendant lord makes the yoga far more real. A weak ascendant lord leaves it like a palace without a steady ruler.
Jupiter’s other lordship. Jupiter’s second sign matters. For Taurus it also rules the 8th, and for Leo it rules the 8th alongside the 5th, which adds a demanding, transformative theme to the gains. For Scorpio it rules the 2nd and 5th, and for Aquarius the 2nd and 11th, so both of its houses are wealth houses and the picture is cleaner.
Navamsa. Check the condition of Jupiter and the 9th lord in the navamsa. A planet that shines in the birth chart but falls in the navamsa gives a more outward than inward result.
When it does not work (cancellation and common mistakes)
Jupiter does not rule a wealth house. For Aries, Gemini, Cancer, Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius, Capricorn and Pisces ascendants, this yoga in its standard forms cannot apply. A report claiming it for those ascendants is using a looser idea.
Jupiter is simply in a kendra. A strong Jupiter in a kendra is a fine placement and may be Hamsa Yoga, but it is not Akhanda Samrajya unless the wealth-house lordship is also present.
Debilitation. A debilitated Jupiter in Capricorn, or a debilitated 9th lord, does not deliver the yoga. Cancellation of debilitation is a separate subject; see Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga.
Combustion and heavy affliction. A Jupiter too close to the Sun, or pressed by Saturn, Rahu or Ketu, may technically meet a rule while delivering little.
Treating it as a promise of empire. The name invites exaggeration. No one can read from this yoga that a person will become a ruler or a billionaire. At most it indicates a capacity for steady authority and prosperity, which needs effort and favourable periods to show.
Mixing definitions. A report may say “Akhanda Samrajya” using a looser or different definition than the one in this article. Ask which rule was applied.
Timing: when it activates
- The mahadasha of Jupiter is the main window. Authority, learning, wealth and recognition tend to rise together.
- The mahadasha of the 9th lord is the second major window under the commonly quoted form, since that planet carries the fortune half of the yoga.
- Antardashas between Jupiter and the 9th lord inside either period are especially favourable.
- Transits. Jupiter moving through the 10th, 11th or 2nd house, or over its own natal position, often coincides with advancement.

How it differs from similar yogas
Hamsa Yoga. Hamsa Yoga requires Jupiter in its own or exalted sign in a kendra. For the four ascendants in this article that never happens, so for them Hamsa and Akhanda Samrajya cannot occur together. Hamsa forms for many more charts overall.
Raja Yoga. Raja Yoga is about the lords of a kendra and a trikona connecting. Akhanda Samrajya is about Jupiter’s wealth-house lordship together with the strength of the 9th lord.

Gaja Kesari Yoga. Gaja Kesari Yoga relates Jupiter to the Moon in a kendra. It is far more common, and often confused with the stronger, rarer combinations.
How to check it in your own chart
- Write down your ascendant and count which houses Jupiter rules. Does it rule the 2nd, 5th or 11th? If not, stop: the yoga does not apply.
- If it does, find the 9th house and its lord.
- Check whether the 9th lord sits in a kendra, and in what sign.
- Check Jupiter’s own dignity, combustion and affliction.
- Look at the ascendant lord and at the 10th house.
- Confirm both planets in the navamsa, and check when their dashas run.
