In shortDanda Yoga is an Akriti Nabhasa yoga in which the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn all occupy the four houses from the 10th round to the 1st (houses 10, 11, 12 and 1). Classical texts describe family-related hardship, but the wording is brief, translations vary, and an empty house is not a weak one.

Danda Yoga is, on paper, one of the most severe-sounding yogas in the Nabhasa family. Search for it and the same handful of lines appears again and again: loss of spouse and children, separation, unhappiness. It is easy to see why a reader who finds it in their own chart might be alarmed.

The first thing to say is that a yoga is a tendency in a symbolic system, not a forecast. The second is that the rule behind Danda Yoga is very strict, which means most people who think they have it do not. This page sets out the exact rule, what the classical texts say, how the harsh reading may have arisen, and how to approach it calmly.

How Danda Yoga forms

Danda Yoga is present when all seven classical planets, the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, are placed in the four houses counted from the 10th: the 10th, 11th, 12th and 1st. Houses are counted from the ascendant, sign by sign. The four houses run across the top of the chart and round to the ascendant.

Danda means a staff, a rod or a stick. It is the rod of a monk or a teacher, the sceptre of a king, and the rod of punishment. In the old Indian science of governance, dandaniti, the danda is the principle of authority and enforcement. The word therefore carries both senses: a support to lean on, and an instrument of discipline.

The checklist:

  • Count houses from the ascendant sign.
  • The Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn must each be in house 10, 11, 12 or 1.
  • Rahu and Ketu are not among the seven and can be anywhere.
  • The 2nd to 9th houses must hold none of the seven.
  • If even one of the seven is outside the four houses, the yoga is not formed.

The four signs that must hold all seven planets depend on the ascendant:

Ascendant Four signs (10th, 11th, 12th, 1st)
Aries Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries
Taurus Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus
Gemini Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini
Cancer Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer
Leo Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo
Virgo Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo
Libra Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra
Scorpio Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio
Sagittarius Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius
Capricorn Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn
Aquarius Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius
Pisces Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces

Where Danda sits in the Nabhasa family

The Nabhasa yogas (from nabhas, sky) are 32 patterns in four groups: Ashraya (3), Dala (2), Akriti (20) and Sankhya (7). Danda is an Akriti yoga: a yoga of shape, named after the figure that the planets draw.

It is the last of the four quadrant yogas, each beginning at a kendra:

Because the chart is a circle, the Danda quadrant wraps from the 12th house round to the ascendant, and it meets Yupa at the 1st house and Shakti at the 10th.

What the classical texts say

The Akriti yogas are listed in the Nabhasa chapters of the major classical works, including Varahamihira’s Brihat Jataka and the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. The rule for Danda, four houses from the 10th, is consistent between sources. The descriptions of the results are brief.

The commonly quoted effects are that the person is without spouse and children (or separated from them), poor or in a servile position, unhappy, and at odds with relatives and friends. That is the version repeated on most websites and in the older yoga panel of this site.

Some cautions about that reading:

  • It is very short. The classical description is a few phrases, meant for memorising. It was never meant to be applied without the rest of the chart.
  • Translations differ. Some renderings are sharper, others softer. I would not claim to know the single correct wording.
  • The harshness has a probable structural source. The 2nd (family), 4th (home), 5th (children) and 7th (spouse) are all empty in a Danda chart. A verdict about family hardship could be a reading of that emptiness. That is my interpretation of how the verdict may have arisen, not a statement found in the texts, and, as explained below, it is not a reliable way to read a chart.
  • The society was different. The text assumed a world in which a family and household were the main measure of a life. A modern reader should not translate a line like that as a prediction about their own marriage or children.

What it gives in a life

Tendencies only, not guarantees.

Reading the houses. The 10th is career, status and public action. The 11th is gains, income, friends and networks. The 12th is expenses, withdrawal, foreign lands, sleep, retreat and spiritual release. The 1st is the self. A chart with every planet in those four houses puts the weight on the self, on work and its rewards, and on the 12th house’s themes of distance and solitude. The home, the family and the partner are not where the planets are.

Character. A person with the pattern is often driven by work and personal ambition and can be oriented towards what they are building rather than whom they are with. On the positive side, this is a chart with a clear focus. On the challenging side, it can mean that close personal life gets less attention than it needs.

Work. The 10th and 11th houses are both in the pattern, and both are upachaya houses that improve over time. A strong worker, often in an independent or public role, often with income from work and a network. The 12th house adds a pull towards work abroad, behind the scenes, in institutions such as hospitals, research centres or retreats, or in spiritual pursuits.

Money. The 11th house of gains is part of the pattern, and the 10th gives career income. The 2nd house (savings) is empty, and the 12th (expenses) is included, so the reading is often earning well and spending or giving it away. Whether that matches depends on the 2nd lord and the dashas. See Dhana Yoga for the method.

Relationships. Family life often needs conscious attention. Because the 7th house is empty, what matters is the 7th lord, its placement and dignity, and Venus (the natural significator of partnership) and Jupiter (the natural significator of children). Both are necessarily in the four houses of a Danda chart, so check their condition. A strong Jupiter and Venus give a more hopeful reading than the classical one-liner suggests.

Solitude. The 12th house in the quadrant gives a capacity for solitude and, in some people, for contemplative life. This can be a real strength if it is chosen, and a difficulty only if it is unchosen.

A modern overlay, offered as an interpretive idea and not a classical rule: houses 10 to 3 are sometimes called the eastern half of the chart and are associated with self-initiated action. Danda sits wholly in the eastern half. That fits the picture of a person who acts from personal will.

When it is strong and when it is weak

Which houses are occupied. Planets can be spread across the four houses or concentrated. A chart with several planets in the 10th is very career-driven. A concentration in the 12th is much more withdrawn, inward or foreign-oriented.

The 12th house. This is the one dusthana in the quadrant. Planets in the 12th house are in a house of loss and release. Benefics there can lose some worldly ease but gain in spiritual depth. Check which planets are in the 12th and how strong they are.

The 10th and the 1st. Both are kendras, and the 1st is also a trikona. Planets there are strongly placed. A chart in which most of the planets are in these two houses is more robust than one concentrated in the 12th.

The ascendant lord. It is in the quadrant by definition. Its sign, dignity and navamsa show how well the self is supported.

Jupiter and Venus. These are the significators of children and partnership, and both are in the quadrant. A Jupiter in its own sign or exalted in the 10th or 1st, for example, is a clear sign that the gloomy reading does not apply.

Saturn. Saturn is the planet of the staff, discipline and authority. Its strength and placement give the yoga its practical form. Saturn strong in the 10th or 11th tends towards real responsibility and earned authority.

Combustion. The Sun, Mercury and Venus must all be in the four houses, so check combustion: Mercury within about 14 degrees of the Sun and Venus within about 10 degrees are traditionally combust.

Navamsa. Check it, and in particular the navamsa 7th house, which shows the partnership side in more detail.

Birth-time sensitivity. The yoga depends entirely on the ascendant. A birth time off by an hour or two can change the ascendant sign and therefore the four-sign window. Confirm the time if the chart is a near miss.

When it does not work (cancellation and common mistakes)

There is no classical cancellation rule. It forms or it does not, and if it forms, the rest of the chart still counts.

  • Counting “most” planets in the four houses. The rule needs all seven.
  • Counting Rahu or Ketu. They are outside the seven.
  • Counting houses from the Moon instead of the ascendant.
  • Using tropical rather than sidereal positions.
  • Using a house system in which houses do not coincide with signs.
  • Confusing it with Chapa (Dhanus), the larger bow-shaped yoga (houses 10 to 4), or with Chhatra (houses 7 to 1). When two patterns apply, many practitioners read the smaller and more specific one, though that is a practice and not a stated rule.

Over-reading. The main mistake is treating Danda as a prediction of a lonely life, a failed marriage or childlessness. A yoga is a tendency in a symbolic system. It does not override the 5th and 7th lords, Jupiter and Venus, the navamsa and the dashas. It is wrong to tell anyone on the strength of this pattern alone that they will lose their family.

An empty house is not a weak house. The 2nd to 9th houses are empty. That tells you where planets are not, not how those houses fare. Look at where the lord of each empty house sits, how strong it is, and what aspects it.

If family or health questions are weighing on you, a qualified counsellor, doctor or other professional is the right person to talk to. A chart is a reflective tool, not a substitute.

Timing: when it activates

With all seven planets in play, no single dasha is reserved. Practical pointers:

  • Planets in the 10th and 1st houses. They are on the angles, and their dashas are most visible.
  • Planets in the 11th house. Their periods tend to bring gains, networks and fulfilment of ambitions.
  • Planets in the 12th house. Their periods tend to bring travel, retreat, expenses or spiritual interest.
  • Lords of the 5th and 7th houses. Their dashas are when the family themes come into view, so they show timing for the parts of life the quadrant leaves empty.
  • Transits. Saturn and Jupiter crossing the four signs bring the house themes forward.

The article Mahadasha and Antardasha explained shows how to read the 5th and 7th lords’ periods against the natal promise.

How it differs from similar yogas

Yupa, Ishu and Shakti are the other quadrant yogas. Yupa starts at the 1st house, Ishu at the 4th, Shakti at the 7th. Danda shares the 10th with Shakti and the 1st with Yupa. A chart with all seven in the 1st house is both Yupa and Danda; all seven in the 10th is both Shakti and Danda.

Chhatra and Chapa are the seven-house patterns (houses 7 to 1 and 10 to 4) that include the Danda houses. Danda is the smaller, more specific pattern.

Sankhya yogas. Danda spans four signs, so it always comes with a Gola, Yuga, Shoola or Kedara Sankhya yoga.

Kemadruma Yoga is another yoga often linked with solitude and lack of support, but it concerns the Moon having no planets on either side or in conjunction. See Kemadruma Yoga. It is a different rule, and the two should not be confused.

How to check it in your own chart

  1. Get your sidereal (Lahiri) chart. The free kundali tool shows each planet’s sign and your ascendant.
  2. Find your ascendant and use the table above for the four signs (10th, 11th, 12th and 1st houses).
  3. Check that the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn are all in those four signs.
  4. If any one is outside them, Danda Yoga is not formed.
  5. If it forms, note the houses occupied, the ascendant lord, and the dignity of Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, and check the navamsa.
  6. Confirm the birth time if it is a near miss.

The kundali tool lists the yogas it finds and gives the rule that fired; its yoga detection guide documents the method. The tool applies the classical rule used here: it lists Danda Yoga only when all seven planets, Sun to Saturn, fall in the 10th, 11th, 12th and 1st houses, and it does not count Rahu or Ketu.

For the planets involved, see Saturn in the houses, Venus in the houses and Jupiter in the houses.

Frequently asked questions

↳ What is Danda Yoga in astrology?

Danda Yoga is an Akriti Nabhasa yoga formed when all seven planets from the Sun to Saturn sit in the 10th, 11th, 12th and 1st houses. Danda means a staff or rod, and classical texts describe it in severe terms connected with family life.

↳ Does Danda Yoga mean loss of spouse and children?

No. The classical description is brief, translations differ, and a yoga is a tendency, not a forecast. The family houses are empty of planets in this pattern, but an empty house is not a weak one. Look at the 5th and 7th lords, Jupiter and Venus, and the navamsa for a fuller picture.

↳ Is Danda Yoga rare?

Yes. All seven planets must fall into four houses, and Mercury and Venus must stay close to the Sun. Simple arithmetic suggests well under one chart in a hundred, though that is an estimate rather than a survey.

↳ Do Rahu and Ketu count in Danda Yoga?

No. Only the seven classical planets count, from the Sun to Saturn. Rahu and Ketu can be in any house.

↳ What if six planets are in the 10th to 1st houses?

Then the classical yoga is not formed, because it needs all seven. Six planets there still shows a strong emphasis on career, gains and the self, but it is an emphasis and not Danda Yoga.
