In shortSarala Yoga is the 8th-house form of Viparita Raja Yoga. It forms when the lord of the 8th house stands in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, and it is read as courage, resilience in crisis and gains through unexpected or hidden channels. Some schools accept only the 6th and 12th, and some only the 8th.

Sarala Yoga is the second of the three named forms of Viparita Raja Yoga, the classical idea that the lords of difficult houses, when placed in difficult houses, turn their harm against itself. Sarala belongs to the 8th house, the house of upheaval, endings, inheritance, research, secrets and the things people prefer not to discuss.

The 8th is probably the most feared house in popular astrology, which makes this yoga striking. It says that the lord of that house, sent into one of the three houses of difficulty, becomes a source of calm and strength, and that a person with this placement can meet crises that unsettle others with a steady head. This article explains the rule, the differences between schools, and what a realistic reading looks like.

How Sarala Yoga forms

The word sarala in Sanskrit means straight, simple, upright, sincere, without crookedness. It is a curious name for an 8th house yoga, since the 8th is the house of the hidden and the tangled. The tradition’s reading seems to be that this person becomes straightforward and unafraid in the face of exactly the things that complicate other lives.

The core rule is: the lord of the 8th house stands in a dusthana, meaning the 6th, 8th or 12th house. The lord of a house is the planet that owns the sign on that house, counting from the Lagna (the rising sign).

As with the others in the family, schools apply the rule in different ways.

  • The wide form. The 8th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th house. The free kundali tool on this site applies this version, including the 8th lord sitting in its own house.
  • The narrow form. The 8th lord in the 8th house only. The site’s older tool uses this version for the label “Sarala Yoga”, and calls the 8th lord in the 6th or 12th by the general name Viparita Raja Yoga.
  • The strict Viparita form. The 8th lord in the 6th or 12th, not its own house.

So the 8th lord in the 8th is a full Sarala under the wide and narrow forms and not under the strict form. This article uses the wide form as its base. If a reading you have seen disagrees with this one, check which form it uses.

The 8th lord for each ascendant

Ascendant 8th lord Also rules
Aries Mars 1st
Taurus Jupiter 11th
Gemini Saturn 9th
Cancer Saturn 7th
Leo Jupiter 5th
Virgo Mars 3rd
Libra Venus 1st
Scorpio Mercury 11th
Sagittarius Moon none
Capricorn Sun none
Aquarius Mercury 5th
Pisces Venus 3rd

The Sun and Moon own a single sign each, so for Capricorn and Sagittarius ascendants the 8th lord is pure, ruling the 8th alone. For every other ascendant the 8th lord has a second house, and that house colours the yoga.

The checklist

  • Count eight signs from your Lagna sign to find the 8th house.
  • Find the planet that owns that sign (see the table).
  • Find where that planet stands in your chart and count its house from the Lagna.
  • If the house is 6, 8 or 12, Sarala Yoga is present in the wide form. If it is 6 or 12, it also meets the strict form. If it is 8, it meets the narrow form.
  • Then check its strength, its second house and who joins or aspects it.

Two illustrative examples

These are invented placements to show the reasoning, not real charts. First, a Taurus ascendant with Jupiter in Sagittarius in the 8th house. The 8th lord is Jupiter, it stands in the 8th in its own sign, so Sarala Yoga is formed under the wide and narrow forms, though not the strict one. Jupiter also rules the 11th for Taurus, so gains are part of the story. Second, a Capricorn ascendant with the Sun in Leo in the 8th house. The Sun is the 8th lord and rules only that house for Capricorn, so the lordship is unmixed. It stands in its own sign in its own house, so the yoga is formed, and some astrologers would treat it as a clean example. Both charts have Sarala Yoga, and again they do not read the same way.

What the classical texts say

Sarala, Harsha and Vimala are the three named Viparita Raja Yogas, and the Phaladeepika and the Jataka Parijata are the texts usually cited for them. I cannot give a verse, and texts and commentaries vary on the exact conditions, which is the reason for the forms listed above.

The classical description of the Sarala native is a person who is fearless, learned, prosperous and respected, who overcomes enemies, and who is often described as long-lived. The tradition links the 8th house with longevity, and so it is natural that a well-placed 8th lord is read as supportive. That is a statement of tendency and symbolism, not a prediction about anyone’s lifespan, and nothing in a chart replaces medical care. The texts use royal and somewhat extravagant language, reflecting the period in which they were composed. A modern translation would be a person of depth, steadiness and courage, who often gains through channels that are less obvious to others.

Saturn has a particular role. Classical tradition treats Saturn as the natural significator of longevity (ayushkaraka) and of the 8th house’s themes of endurance and endings. When Saturn is the 8th lord, as for Gemini and Cancer ascendants, the yoga carries that flavour with extra weight.

What it gives in a life

Read this as a tendency and not a promise: nothing on this page stands in for medical, legal or financial advice.

Composure in crisis. The most characteristic quality is calm when things go wrong. A person with Sarala is often the one others turn to when events are unsettling, because they do not panic easily.

Gains from the hidden. The 8th house governs inheritance, insurance, shared money, other people’s resources, research and the occult. Sarala is read as gains from such sources: an inheritance, a partner’s resources, an insurance settlement, or income from research, investigation or investing. It is best read as a tendency towards unexpected or indirect gain, not a guaranteed windfall. For the wealth houses themselves, see the article on Dhana Yoga.

Work. Fields often associated with the 8th house include research, investigation and analysis, psychology and therapy, insurance and finance, forensic and medical work, crisis management, occult and esoteric studies, and any field that works with endings and transformations. It does not mean one must choose these, only that the temperament is suited.

Depth and resilience. A tendency to go deeper into subjects than most people, and to transform difficult experiences into understanding. People often describe surviving something serious and emerging clearer about what matters.

Character. Fearlessness, steadiness, discretion, a taste for depth and honesty. The shadow side, if the rest of the chart supports it, is secrecy, intensity, a reluctance to share feelings, and an expectation of crisis.

The house makes a difference

  • In the 8th itself. The house is strengthened. The themes of research, transformation, inheritance and depth are emphasised directly.
  • In the 6th. The 8th lord’s energy moves into work, service, health and competition. Gains come through dealing with problems, disputes or illness, and through being the one who handles what others cannot.
  • In the 12th. The energy moves into withdrawal, foreign lands, spiritual life and expenditure. Gains come through letting go, through time abroad, or through inner work.

The pages on Saturn in all houses and Mars in the 8th house describe how two of the commonest 8th lords behave in each place.

When it is strong and when it is weak

How clean the lordship is. An 8th lord with no other house is the cleanest, which applies to the Moon for Sagittarius and the Sun for Capricorn. A planet that also rules a good house is mixed. The most delicate cases are those where the 8th lord also rules the Lagna, which is Mars for Aries and Venus for Libra. Sending the Lagna lord into a dusthana is a separate concern for vitality and confidence, and the two readings should be weighed together.

Trikona lordship. For Gemini ascendants Saturn rules the 8th and the 9th, for Leo ascendants Jupiter rules the 5th and the 8th, and for Aquarius ascendants Mercury rules the 5th and the 8th. A trikona lord, normally among the most auspicious, is being sent into a dusthana. Some astrologers consider the 8th lordship the stronger influence, while others see a mixed result. This is a genuine difference of opinion.

Dignity. A strong 8th lord in a dusthana is classically read as doing its work well. A debilitated 8th lord needs separate consideration. For a Leo ascendant, for instance, Jupiter is the 8th lord, and Jupiter in Capricorn, which is the 6th house for Leo, is debilitated. Whether that debilitation is cancelled is the question answered by Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga.

Company. The classical view is that Sarala is cleanest when the 8th lord is not strongly joined by the lords of good houses. A second dusthana lord together with it is traditionally the strongest form. Others hold that benefic influence simply softens the route.

Combustion. An 8th lord very close to the Sun is called combust, and is generally read as having less independence, so a reduced yoga.

Navamsa. The navamsa (D9) is the ninth-divisional chart, read for a planet’s deeper strength. A well-placed 8th lord in the navamsa is more convincing. You can check this with the navamsa calculator.

When it does not work (cancellation and common mistakes)

  • A planet in the 8th that is not the 8th lord. A planet in the 8th house is a different matter. The rule is about the lord.
  • The 8th lord in a good house. If the 8th lord stands in the 1st, 5th, 9th or 10th, the rule is not met.
  • Forgetting the school. A chart with the 8th lord in the 8th has Sarala under the wide and narrow forms and not the strict one.
  • A weak foundation. A fragile Lagna or Lagna lord limits how much of the yoga appears.
  • Reading a longevity promise into it. The classical link to long life is symbolic and traditional. It is not a forecast, and medical questions belong with a doctor.

The most common over-reading online is “Sarala Yoga guarantees long life and sudden wealth”. The classical claim is about temperament and a tendency towards gain, and it depends on the planet, its dignity and its dasha. A second mistake is to treat any 8th house planet as Sarala. A third is to use the yoga to dismiss real difficulty. It does not remove the crisis. It is read as the capacity to meet it.

Timing: when it activates

Yogas are said to deliver most clearly in the periods of the planets that form them. For Sarala, that means the mahadasha of the 8th lord. The dasha of an 8th lord is often described as a time of change, depth and testing, and Sarala is read in how that period resolves: the person meets the change with steadiness and, in the classical view, gains from it.

The Vimshottari mahadasha lengths are Sun 6 years, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17, Ketu 7 and Venus 20, so the window depends on which planet rules your 8th. For an 8th lord of Saturn, the window is 19 years, among the longest. The antardasha of the 8th lord within the mahadasha of another dusthana lord, or of a planet sitting in the 8th, is a window often watched. The mahadasha and antardasha guide explains how to read your running periods, and the mahadasha calculator lists yours.

For transits, Saturn or Jupiter passing over the 8th house or the 8th lord are often read as supporting triggers. Saturn’s transit through the 8th from the Moon is popularly feared, and the Sade Sati article gives a calmer and more careful look at Saturn’s transits in general.

How it differs from similar yogas

Viparita Raja Yoga. Viparita Raja Yoga is the general idea for all three dusthana lords. Sarala is its 8th-house version.

Harsha and Vimala. Harsha Yoga is the pattern for the 6th lord, practical and concerned with health, rivals and obligation. Vimala Yoga is the pattern for the 12th lord, concerned with loss, expenditure and detachment. Sarala is the deepest and most inward of the three, concerned with crisis, hidden matters and transformation.

Raja Yoga. A Raja Yoga links kendra and trikona lords, the lords of good houses. Sarala concerns the lord of a difficult house and produces its result through reversal.

How to check it in your own chart

  1. Get your chart with an accurate birth time. The ascendant calculator can confirm your rising sign.
  2. Count eight signs from the Lagna and find the planet that owns the 8th sign.
  3. Find where that planet stands and count its house from your Lagna.
  4. If it is in the 6th, 8th or 12th, note which form of the rule applies.
  5. Check its second house, dignity, combustion and navamsa sign, and look at the dasha.

The free kundali tool tests Sarala Yoga and shows the exact rule that fired, including the house the 8th lord is in and why that counts. The yoga analysis guide describes every rule the tool tests.

Frequently asked questions

↳ What is Sarala Yoga in astrology?

Sarala Yoga is the 8th-house form of Viparita Raja Yoga. It forms when the lord of the 8th house is placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, and it is read as courage, composure in crisis and gains through unexpected or hidden channels.

↳ Does Sarala Yoga give long life?

The 8th house is traditionally linked with longevity, so classical texts describe the yoga as supportive. That is a symbolic tendency, not a prediction about anyone's lifespan, and health questions belong with a doctor.

↳ Does the 8th lord in the 8th house count as Sarala Yoga?

In the wide form used by this site's classical engine, yes. The narrow form counts only the 8th lord in its own house, and the strict Viparita form counts only the 6th and 12th. Schools differ, so check which rule a reading uses.

↳ Does Sarala Yoga bring sudden wealth?

It is read as a tendency towards gain through inheritance, shared resources, research or unexpected channels, usually after or through difficulty. It is not a promise of a windfall, and the amount depends on the wealth houses and the dasha.

↳ When does Sarala Yoga give results?

Mainly in the mahadasha of the 8th lord and in antardashas of related planets. These periods often involve change and testing, and the yoga is read in how they resolve. Saturn or Jupiter transiting the 8th house can act as supporting triggers.
