About this piece
An akhand jyot diya, made to keep one flame lit through a long prayer or vigil. A brass base and fuel holder sit under a glass chimney that shields the flame from draughts. The seller says the form draws on temple architecture, with a base, a rising structure and a top.
It holds 300 ml of ghee or sesame oil, according to the seller. The photos show a gold-toned diya with a clear glass chimney, shown in a box in several.
How it is used
An akhand jyot is a lamp kept burning without a break, and many homes light one for Navratri or a long puja. The seller says to set it on a heat-safe surface such as marble, ceramic or metal, at least 2 feet from curtains, and not to touch the top cap or chimney while lit.
Looking after it
- Wash with mild soap and a soft cloth, then dry completely.
- The seller suggests lemon and salt or a gentle brass cleaner for the finish.
