About this piece
An urli is a wide, shallow bowl, traditionally filled with water and flowers or floating candles and set near a doorway or a shrine. This one is made by hand in brass by thatheras, the traditional metal workers, according to. It has a plain golden finish with lines.
The seller shows it two ways: as a decorative bowl for flowers or candles, and as serveware for snacks. At 23.5 cm across and 5.7 cm deep it holds 1.6 litres. The photos show a low, rounded bowl with a flat base.
How it is used
Many homes fill an urli with water and float flowers, petals or small lamps in it, and place it near the entrance or a shrine, often at festivals such as Diwali. The seller also shows it holding snacks, so it can double as a serving bowl.
